No Elson might mean Evans return to Nuggets
By Aaron J. Lopez, Rocky Mountain News
July 22, 2006
So long, Cisco. Welcome back, Reggie?
By declining to match San Antonio's two-year, $6 million offer sheet for free agent center Francisco Elson, the Nuggets could be poised to re-sign free-agent forward Reggie Evans.
( 'told ya dit'int I? :smokin)
Evans' agent, Dan Fegan, said he and the Nuggets are "working through a number of things," and he was optimistic Evans would return to Denver.
"We're still confident that he'll end up with the Nuggets," Fegan said Friday. "I think it'll work out."
Acquired in a trade with the Seattle SuperSonics on Feb. 23, Evans averaged 5.2 points and 8.7 rebounds in 26 games with the Nuggets.
Though well over the salary cap for next season, the Nuggets have their $5.2 midlevel exception available to offer Evans and other free agents.
The Nuggets are not expected to spend the entire sum, though, because they are about $4 million from reaching the NBA's $65.42 million luxury-tax level.
Nuggets player personnel director Mark Warkentien declined comment on negotiations with Evans. Coach George Karl said he expects Evans' status to be determined by other moves around the NBA.
"There's two or three free agent situations or trade situations that are going to maybe open up some windows for us to participate," Karl said.
HE'S NO. 1: Newly acquired guard J.R. Smith said he plans to wear No. 1 for the Nuggets next season. His preferred number, 23, belongs to veteran center Marcus Camby.
So why No. 1?
"Because this is a fresh start for me," Smith said.
He also will have to be flexible when it comes to housing in the Denver area. Smith recently adopted two pit bull puppies, but the dogs are banned in the city.
ETC.: Elson's agent, Calvin Andrews, said his client's contract is frontloaded, meaning he will receive two lump sums of $2.4 million each of the next two years. Andrews, who also represents Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, said Anthony, who signed a five-year, $79 million extension that begins in 2007-08, also has frontloaded provisions in his contract . . Karl said he did not expect veteran forward Keith Van Horn to sign with any team soon. The Nuggets have interest in the versatile free agent. "Keith's a very bright man, a good pro," Karl said. . . . Fegan, who also represents free agent guard DerMarr Johnson, said Smith's arrival "may have some impact" on whether Johnson re-signs with the Nuggets . . . Warkentien had no comment on the plight of former NBA forward Shawn Kemp, who was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in Houston. Kemp participated in a Nuggets free-agent camp last month.

Opponents rebounded better and field goal percentage went up when Elson was on the floor for Denver. 56% of Elson's shots were not close jump shots, 38% coming with less than 10 seconds off the shot clock. The Spurs have thier work cut out for them in Elson.

We'd still be trading faxes with Fegan in October.
I think Elson will be a big body in the center for us, better and more mobile than Rasho. He just needs to learn the defensive schemes.

Does part of that have to do with him replacing Camby on the floor when Camby was playing? I would expect opponents rebounding and field goal% to go up when Elson is replacing one of the better rebounders and shot blockers in the league.

That is why the spurs wanted him and not someone like Scola, Elson plays away from the basket so that Tim will have more room on the block.

Doesn’t Jackie play on the block and if so would that be a problem for Duncan?

I don't think so. The Spurs frequently play hi-lo with their 4 and 5, plus they run tons of high and side screen rolls. They move their Bigs around quite a bit. I'm think their "wedge" play is one Big out and one in.

The return of hi-lo. Awesome.

Playing Jackie and Tim at the same time shouldn't be much of a problem because Tim isn't one dimensional and the Spurs can run the offense through him anywhere on the court. The question with playing them together is how they will match up against quicker teams on D....which means Butler will need to lose some pounds and add quickness.

Dan Fegan is probably the sole reason why the Spurs didn't pursue Evans.

Not trying to sound ignorant but could you explain the hi-lo play.

One Big out at the top... High-post, FT line or farther. One Big ends up inside after either posting up or cutting off a screen. The Big at the top feeds the Big down low. Hi-lo.

Here are a couple of examples I found of offenses using the hi-lo with it's 4 (PF) and 5 (C). The yellow circles are the offensive players. Two examples (3 out-2 in) and then a migration to a 4 out-1 in. The 5 screens turns and seals for the feed from the top.

Elson has been replaced by Jamal Sampson :smokin :lol
and re-signing reggie isnt a done deal yet, i think he is pricing himself pretty high. Id let him go if it meant getting another shooter. Camby and Nene will clean the glass
