No Elson might mean Evans return to Nuggets

So long, Cisco. Welcome back, Reggie?
By declining to match San Antonio's two-year, $6 million offer sheet for free agent center Francisco Elson, the Nuggets could be poised to re-sign free-agent forward Reggie Evans.

Evans' agent, Dan Fegan, said he and the Nuggets are "working through a number of things," and he was optimistic Evans would return to Denver.
"We're still confident that he'll end up with the Nuggets," Fegan said Friday. "I think it'll work out."
Acquired in a trade with the Seattle SuperSonics on Feb. 23, Evans averaged 5.2 points and 8.7 rebounds in 26 games with the Nuggets.
Though well over the salary cap for next season, the Nuggets have their $5.2 midlevel exception available to offer Evans and other free agents.
The Nuggets are not expected to spend the entire sum, though, because they are about $4 million from reaching the NBA's $65.42 million luxury-tax level.
Nuggets player personnel director Mark Warkentien declined comment on negotiations with Evans. Coach George Karl said he expects Evans' status to be determined by other moves around the NBA.
"There's two or three free agent situations or trade situations that are going to maybe open up some windows for us to participate," Karl said.
HE'S NO. 1: Newly acquired guard J.R. Smith said he plans to wear No. 1 for the Nuggets next season. His preferred number, 23, belongs to veteran center Marcus Camby.
So why No. 1?
"Because this is a fresh start for me," Smith said.
He also will have to be flexible when it comes to housing in the Denver area. Smith recently adopted two pit bull puppies, but the dogs are banned in the city.
ETC.: Elson's agent, Calvin Andrews, said his client's contract is frontloaded, meaning he will receive two lump sums of $2.4 million each of the next two years. Andrews, who also represents Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, said Anthony, who signed a five-year, $79 million extension that begins in 2007-08, also has frontloaded provisions in his contract . . Karl said he did not expect veteran forward Keith Van Horn to sign with any team soon. The Nuggets have interest in the versatile free agent. "Keith's a very bright man, a good pro," Karl said. . . . Fegan, who also represents free agent guard DerMarr Johnson, said Smith's arrival "may have some impact" on whether Johnson re-signs with the Nuggets . . . Warkentien had no comment on the plight of former NBA forward Shawn Kemp, who was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in Houston. Kemp participated in a Nuggets free-agent camp last month.
