Who were they supposed to get? No one has answered that yet because there wasnt anyone worth a shit available to realistically get this offseason. With 3 all star caliber players on one team you need pieces to fit, not more superstars.

Butler, Bonner and Vaughn were pretty good pickups. Butler was steal. Bonner is a guy who should be useful. Vaughn was as good as the Spurs were going to do for the minimum. Whether a minimum deal should be what was used to get a point guard is a different question.

My major beef is Elson. I just don't see how anyone can justify using most of the MLE on a guy who was Denver's opening day 12th man. I've listed at least ten other players I would have liked the Spurs to have gone after other than Elson.

When looking at the big picture, Elson was the Spurs' big money signing of the offseason. That said, the Spurs are lucky I give them two stars.

I think the Spurs have done a fine job this off-season. This was a very weak free agent class and we couldn't get anything in the draft. I like Bonner, Butler, and Vaughn. I will have to see what Elson will bring and if Williams will even be on our roster this season.

That's what Mavs' fans are hopiing for and counting on. But maybe, like Diop, Butler comes to camp in the best shape of his life, maximizes his potential and significantly surpases his previous performance which, particularly offensively, has been better than Diop had shown up until last year.

Jermaine O'Neal was the 12th man on the bench his entire 3-4 years in Portland, and then he was traded to Indiana to become their franchise player. Lots of players sit on the bench on one team but can actually play, they just don't fit in that team's system.

Based on scouting reports, I think Elson will be a decent starting center. He'll probably split minutes with Bonner a lot, depending on match ups, and while Butler gets adjusted. But Butler could take over the starting spot by the ASG.

Well, I'm just observing from a fan's point-of-view, and while I would call this summer anything but a gold mine for free agency overall and pickups for the Spurs, I think the Spurs patched up a few spots. They really didn't have that many options. I was worried Butler would end up staying in New York. Anyway, its all fans' right to criticize, but I still have faith in Spurs mgt. and realize that its hard for any team to maintain a trio of talent like the Spurs have in Tim, Manu and Tony. Sure, it'd be nice to have
Ben Wallace at center and Chauncey Billups backing up Tony, but that's unrealistic. And I think the Spurs made some very wise moves in making a contending team next season while leaving ample cap room to strengthen the roster next summer.

You're missing the point, honey. The Spurs management team is supposed to overspend and do as much as they possibly can to ensure that we have 5 all-star players starting. And who doesn't want to play for the Spurs? Huh? The only reason we didn't get Ben Wallace was because HoltCat was too cheap.

Spurs fans are going to bitch about something, particularly after a season in which ended in disappointment. Don't know if you were around when we traded Rasho and shortly thereafter when the best centers made their verbal commitments. First, there was joy in the land that the terrible Rasho (who should never have been allowed on the court because of his awfulness) and his awful contract were gone. Then, when Wallace signed, then Mohammed, lo, there was panic in the land. People were willing to have Rasho back, or to overpay his successor. There was much panic and much bitching about the cheap owners who will do everything they can to cripple the team if it means saving money. Now we've got something, and for not much money, and that's something new to bitch about - we didn't spend enough, we need better players, what are they thinking?

Personally, Butler interests me (though the thought that we are excited to pick up NY's third string center is funny), Elson doesn't. I think we've added some servicable scrubs, maybe they'll pan out to more. Great, if so. The core is still there, and if they can stay healthy, that's what will truly make the difference.

The Mavs still have to contend with what many must consider to be the best trifectia on any NBA franchise- Tim, Manu and Tony. From Bruce to Elson, the rest are role players. The Spurs have traditionally done a good job of defining roles and players sticking to them. I don't see next year as a looming disappointment.

The vast majority of analysts have not said that. Even the local writers have said the Spurs have not improved, except financially. The Spurs themselves have made comments aimed at lowering fans' expectations of the two guys.
