People who consume alcohol earn significantly more at their jobs than non-drinkers, according to a US study that highlighted "social capital" gained from drinking.
The study published in the Journal of Labor Research Thursday concluded that drinkers earn 10 to 14 percent more than teetotalers, and that men who drink socially bring home an additional seven percent in pay.
"Social drinking builds social capital," said Edward Stringham, an economics professor at San Jose State University and co-author of the study with fellow researcher Bethany Peters.
"Social drinkers are out networking, building relationships, and adding contacts to their BlackBerries that result in bigger paychecks."
...
"Drinkers typically tend to be more social than abstainers."

The more alcohol you drink the more you earn, by that kinda logic we ought to have a least a few millionaires on this forum.

Oh man... so network building must involve alcohol?
Actually, in Japan that's very true - most business is done at enkais, after hours drinking parties with colleagues. The Japanese find it impossible to actually state their opinion or make a decision in a work context (they are strident avoiders of any form of "conflict"), unless under the influence of alcohol. And yes, I'm serious, I worked in Japan for two years. Want to get something done, wait until everyone's drunk at the enkai and bring it up. If it's a matter of contention it may end in a brawl* though... :lmao
*the type where a lot of drunken stumbling and slapping occurs and no-one gets hurt.
Also note this part of the article:
"The authors acknowledged their study, funded by the Reason Foundation, a libertarian think tank, contradicted research released in 2000 by the Harvard School of Public Health."
I'll go with Harvard on this one.

It’s not, although it is irrelevant. I can still have an opinion of things which don’t affect me.

So your point is it’s stupid to say taking drugs is wrong (or idiotic, as I stated in an earlier post).

I hold nothing against them. To each their own. I used to smoke weed back in school and now I don't, so I can't really hold anything against them, plus, like I said earlier, weed is a hell of a lot less harmful then alcohol, and just as much fun if you ask me.
As for booze, I drink on weekends, not so much to get wasted, unless the mood strikes me right, which it usually does about twice a month. Does that make me pathetic, no. People that get drunk regularly are not pathetic either, some do it for fun in fact. The ones that have lost control and are having their lives ruined because of it have a disease and usually need help. Nothing pathetic about it, they have just made some bad decisions in their life, or have had things happen to them that were out of their control and need to get both feet on the ground again. I applaud the ones that do recover and I pity the ones that don't, but I sure as hell wouldn't ever call them pathetic because some of them are probably the greatest people on Earth and need the help from others rather then the criticism that some are so quick to give out.

Washington, DC: Police arrested an estimated 786,545 persons for marijuana violations in 2005, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual Uniform Crime Report, released today. The total is the highest ever recorded by the FBI, and comprised 42.6 percent of all drug arrests in the United States.
"These numbers belie the myth that police do not target and arrest minor marijuana offenders," said NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre, who noted that at current rates, a marijuana smoker is arrested every 40 seconds in America. "This effort is a tremendous waste of criminal justice resources that diverts law enforcement personnel away from focusing on serious and violent crime, including the war on terrorism."
Of those charged with marijuana violations, approximately 88 percent some 696,074 Americans were charged with possession only. The remaining 90,471 individuals were charged with "sale/manufacture," a category that includes all cultivation offenses even those where the marijuana was being grown for personal or medical use. In past years, roughly 30 percent of those arrested were age 19 or younger.

Special interests need new "customers" in the criminal "justice" system on a continuous basis. Craven cops, prosecutors, defense lawyers, bail bondspersons, prison guard unions, private prison builders/operators, and on and on --- all have a stake in making sure there's lots of new "criminals" to leech off.
