Yeah, but they probably spend the extra cash on booze.
LinkPeople who consume alcohol earn significantly more at their jobs than non-drinkers, according to a US study that highlighted "social capital" gained from drinking.
The study published in the Journal of Labor Research Thursday concluded that drinkers earn 10 to 14 percent more than teetotalers, and that men who drink socially bring home an additional seven percent in pay.
"Social drinking builds social capital," said Edward Stringham, an economics professor at San Jose State University and co-author of the study with fellow researcher Bethany Peters.
"Social drinkers are out networking, building relationships, and adding contacts to their BlackBerries that result in bigger paychecks."
...
"Drinkers typically tend to be more social than abstainers."
The more alcohol you drink the more you earn, by that kinda logic we ought to have a least a few millionaires on this forum.

Holt, Griffen, Koren Robinson..........
Grown ups getting drunk is pathetic.
well they aren't really grown ups then are they...
Oh man... so network building must involve alcohol?
Actually, in Japan that's very true - most business is done at enkais, after hours drinking parties with colleagues. The Japanese find it impossible to actually state their opinion or make a decision in a work context (they are strident avoiders of any form of "conflict"), unless under the influence of alcohol. And yes, I'm serious, I worked in Japan for two years. Want to get something done, wait until everyone's drunk at the enkai and bring it up. If it's a matter of contention it may end in a brawl* though...
*the type where a lot of drunken stumbling and slapping occurs and no-one gets hurt.
Also note this part of the article:
"The authors acknowledged their study, funded by the Reason Foundation, a libertarian think tank, contradicted research released in 2000 by the Harvard School of Public Health."
I'll go with Harvard on this one.
In other news, here's the sourcewatch lowdown on the Reason Foundation:

Interesting, but in no way shocking.
I can atest that socializing with business partners in south/east Europe always involves alcohol. In some countries even refusing an offered cigarette will raise eyebrows.
I agree Slomo

He might have his own damn business if he drank.

Manny asked a question and I answered.
Next time somebody asks a question, i'll ask for your permission to answer, ok?
Why? Because I think it's stupid to get high?

It's Friday! Time to act like a pathetic idiot.
No because you actually said "grown-ups getting drunk is pathetic"........seriously, shut the up........
Whats stupid about getting high?
Furthermore, what the do you care if people get high, or drunk? Is it affecting you in any way, shape, or form........probably not, so don't continue to say stupid ing things..............In fact, I would venture to say that people that say "grown-ups (and who uses the term grown ups? if anything it should be adults) getting drunk is pathetic", are themselves, rather pathetic.
I agree with smeagol that at some point it is immature to continue smoking pot, especially when you have a family, but I think drinking occasionally is an adult decision that ought not be judged. Oh well, to each his own...how do you think bush got elected...becaue people like smeagol think its ok to be the bedroom police.
I don't even smoke pot anymore (thankyou random drug tests) but I still don't think it's a big deal. , it's more harmless then drinking is.
