The city of San Antonio

The median income for a household in the city is $36,214, and the median income for a family is $41,331. Males have a median income of $30,061 versus $24,444 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,487. 17.3% of the population and 14.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Still think $100,000 isn't a lot of money?

"Invasion" is a loaded word

"Stone Oak residents fear SAHA invasion" was the headline atop a Page 1 story Wednesday in the San Antonio Express-News. The report, by E-N staffer Ron Wilson, accurately described a public hearing at Stone Oak Elementary School Tuesday in the upscale North Side neighborhood of Stone Oak.

As Wilson reported, residents objected to a plan by the San Antonio Housing Authority to buy two apartment complexes and set aside about 10 percent of their units for low-income elderly and disabled people.

Some people who spoke at the meeting warned of crime, declining property values and loss of revenues from the complexes being owned by SAHA, a government agency that is not subject to taxation.

It was one of those ugly displays that occur from time to time in this and many other cities and boils down to this: You can't blame the property owners who have worked hard to earn the material wealth they have and hope to keep; and you can't blame low-income people for wanting to improve their lot in life. It has happened here before and it will happen here again.

However, the Express-News' use of the term "invasion" only fanned the flames. It is not a good thing to be an invader or to be invaded. This is not an attack by an army or an infestation of varmints. "Invasion" is negative to both sides. It stirs the pot and is divisive. It is inflammatory. It should not have been used.

Finally, it is important to add this conclusion: The reporter, Ron Wilson, did not use "invasion" in the report he filed on the hearing. An editor later substituted the explosive word, and it also made itself into the headline. Wilson's term was something tamer — and more accurate.

The report and headline were later amended in the MySA.com online account of the meeting. The online headline was changed to "Stone Oak residents upset over SAHA plan."

I went to southside high school, and that is a low income school.

By god's blessings I have a very good income, but I choose to live south of town due to the area of land I get to have.

That being said, if the city forces something upon you like this.

Sounds like a little social engineering experiment by SAHA to me, and one fit to piss a lot of people off. They did the same thing here, interspersing public housing throughout all kinds of suburbs, rich, middle income and poor, from the 1960s onward.

It worked in some places, usually with stand alone houses, because there a community network is more likely to develop between neighbours with land to look after. I grew up in a duplex (one large building split into two houses) in a rich suburb although my family is not rich (totally middle class :lol ), and the public housing tennant next door was an alcoholic single mother who, at first, was very difficult to live next to. However, as my mother got to know her and they developed an "understanding", her behaviour improved, and everyone learned to get along. It helped both sides as she stabilised her life and we didn't have any complaints with her behaviour. Community bonds made the situation work.

However, from the perspective of a cab driver (I drove for 6 years) who knew the city from end to end and dealt with all it's people, the same idea didn't didn't work in apartment complexes which, over time, became slums and were progressively knocked down over the last 15 years. They were dens of poverty, crime and drug addiction (we had a bad heroin problem in the 80s and 90s). Those public housing tennants have now mostly been redistributed to stand alone houses or town houses in outlying suburbs.

I can't say what will work over there because our societies are very different.
