I partly agree, I actually meant they only chance they have of winning requires some kind of double-digit lead going into the fourth.

Holy crap, Graham can't buy a call, 2 out of bounds gone against him and no loose ball foul.

didn't dallas have a 20 point lead in the first quarter against the raptors last time?

dallas often plays their 1st quarters as hard as some teams play their 4ths

Mavs are also not good in afternoon games. In February last year in Toronto, we got down by 20+ in the first half. We came back to win in OT but the Mavs are not good during the day. Takes them a while to wake up.

Sure, when the Mavs come out hitting, their 1st q's are very often over 30 pts.

But I've seen many Mavs games like this one where the Mavs end up winning the 2nd half have much better than they lost the first half.

That was true for a while, but for the last couple weeks, they have gotten off to some slow starts in the first quarters.

I just looked up their January games, and saw what I would consider two slow starts: 17 first quarter points against Indiana and 19, also against Indiana. Interesting. There were two 21-point first quarters--against the Spurs and Lakers. There was a 33 point first quarter against Seattle, a 26 point first quarter against Utah and a 22 point first quarter against Portland. With the exception of the Indy games, those are still pretty good starts.

I don't really understand your second sentence, but I think what you're saying is that the Mavs have played much better in the second half after "losing"--being outscored in--the first half. Right? And while I don't have any comparisons to say that's true, I'll agree with you that from my observation, the Mavs are much stronger in the fourth quarter than they've been in the past, and that it would be foolish to expect a fourth-quarter collapse.

Never discount the fourth quarter Dirk factor.

No home cooking (http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070113/SPORTS04/701130491&theme=)

The Pacers were frustrated by several officials' calls in the second half. Replays showed they had a right to complain about a few of them.
O'Neal was called for a foul on a shot by Dirk Nowitzki just inside the 3-point line with 3:59 left in regulation. Replays indicated there was no contact.
Nowitzki hit both free throws, tying the score at 93.
An incensed O'Neal screamed, "I'm not a rookie!" at one of the referees after the call. He was still frustrated in the locker room afterward.
"I didn't touch him; didn't even touch him," O'Neal said. "It just kind of looked like (the referees) wanted them to win. I'd just appreciate it if they'd look at it both ways. We play hard, too. That's the most frustrating thing about it. We don't get any calls.
"Sometimes we get treated like we're not even a basketball team," he said. "It's absolutely ridiculous. We're basketball players, too."

umm the the first game of the spurs/mavs series this year, Elson did a great job on Dirk and was a key reason why the spurs won that game; 2nd game Pop decided to play Oberto on Dirk, spurs lose; 3rd game Elson due to injury couldnt play the game, Mavs win.

Just wait for the playoffs, because I believe Elson is enough to contain Dirk, no more small ball.

and in all of the games so far neither team has blown each other out, so come playoff time both teams will be evenly matched

Raports blew a 16 point 3rd quarter lead, the refs didnt hand the mavs the 17 points needed for the win
I'm not sure if you realize this, but fouls lead to free throws. In most cases free throws lead to points. The "Raports" also took a 16 point lead early in the game. But surely that couldn't be because of the "Raports" good defense and teamwork and execution on offense. The lack of respect for the "Raports" is disgraceful.

I love the spurs fans in here blaming it on the refs when they're not even watching the game. Bosh pretty much shot freethrows everytime he touched the ball.

Dallas freethrows - 17/19
Toronto freethrows - 21/24

Dirk freethrows - 7/9
Bosh freethrows - 10/12

And you're saying the Raptors didn't get any calls? You're all pathetic. Keep fearing the Mavs. Your season is over. Now go cry to a mod.

wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah! crying about the refs when you're a Spurs fan. Hilarious. Duncan got 40 freethrows per game against the Mavs in the playoffs last year. Keep crying, third seed.

sorry dumbass, but its the mostly the raptors fans complaining about the officiating, not the Spurs fans

A quick review of the posts tells me that a Toronto fan made an observation about the refs, but nobody with a team of "San Antonio Spurs" under their title. That Toronto fan was clearly watching the game.

Told ya, Mavs would win. They've become a surprisingly good 4th quarter team...that's a big area of improvement from last season (See NBA Finals Collapse, particular Game 3 :))

They've become a very good 2nd half defensive team but their trend of giving up 50-60 pts in the 1st half to lesser teams and having to play their asses off on D in 2nd half just to win is getting really OLD. At least they're winning the games.

Mavs this year have blown out a lot of teams too. I don't recall exactly what percentage of Spurs 04-05 games were blowouts, but I do remember that the 04-05 Spurs weren't even the top seed in the West, so they couldnt have been that dominant in the regular season.

Now, obviously that doesnt matter since the Spurs won it all when it counted. But I'm not quite sure how relevant it is that the Mavs are only winning half their games by double digits instead of all of them. At least, I'm not sure quite yet.....

You have a point though. It's also a good thing to win the close games sometimes. Most games in the playoffs in the later rounds are gonna be close. If you only know how to win in blowouts then you probably got another thing comin.

They went back and forth for first place with Phoenix until about March, because Tim Duncan went down. They were very dominant with bad teams, I know we played very well against good teams at home. We blew out Phoenix at home.

It's not that relevant, I'm just trying to be optimistic :lol. I think Phoenix and San Antonio both have just as much of a chance to win the West as the Mavs do, and that's scary.

And yes, close games are a good thing. Gives the Mavs good experience in those situations. I actually like close games for the Spurs for that very reason.

"They are very very good, but their wins aren't just absolute domination."

Last year, when Pistons were looking unbeatable, I remember they had several games just like the Mavs today.

Jazz did this several times before Christmas and the Suns do it often, too.

When it comes to the 4th qtr, or in crunch time, the weaker pretenders have more TOs, miss more FT and FGs, miss the big shots, make more defensive errors, less RBs than the better team.

These kinds of wins are good tests and confidence builders.

Yeah, against most teams they've been coasting in the first half and turning it on in the 2nd half (especially on D). They've been behind at half a lot lately it seems. I think they've gotten extremely cocky over the last month or so. I do know that they always play really hard in the 2nd halfs of games. They don't mind getting behind from teams cuz they are so confident that they'll come back and win. Hopefully, they won't do this in the playoffs.

Dirk II? Nowitzki lauds Raptor rookie Bargnani

Tribune news services

January 15, 2007

Toronto's Andrea Bargnani, the No. 1 pick in the draft, had 12 points, including two three-pointers, in the Raptors' home loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. The 7-foot Italian has often been compared to Dirk Nowitzki, who had 38 points Sunday, because of his size and outside shot.

"He's a better player than when I was 19 or 20," the Mavericks' Nowitzki said of the 21-year-old Bargnani. "He's going to be a heck of a player. He's a little more athletic than I even was back then. He can drive a little better than me."

Some heady praise for Raps rookie

The comparisons between Raptors rookie Andrea Bargnani and Dallas Mavericks all-star Dirk Nowitzki may be unfair given their respective NBA experience, but they are inevitable, just the same.

Both are big men, both are from Europe and both were first-round draft picks.

But that is pretty much where the comparisons should end, firstly because Nowitzki -- in his ninth year in the association -- starts and gets his minutes.

Yesterday, Nowitzki was on the floor for 46 minutes of 48 played and notched a game-high 38 points. Bargnani came off the bench to put 32 minutes and 12 points beside his name.

Secondly, while Nowitzki is being mentioned again this season for MVP consideration, Bargnani will settle for a few rookie-of-the-year votes.

The seven-foot German, however, said following yesterday's 97-96 win over the Raptors, that he liked what he saw in the young Italian, who was selected No. 1 overall in the NBA draft.

"How old is he now, 20, 21?" Nowitzki asked. "Whatever he is, he is certainly better than I was when I was that age."

Nowitzki, 28, said that he got to see Bargnani up close and personal more than he might have liked yesterday.

There was one point in the game, with 2:04 left in the third quarter, when Bargnani dunked over Nowitzki and, just seconds later, batted a shot away from the Dallas forward at the other end.

"Obviously, he is a great shooter, but he can put it on the floor a little bit, too," Nowitzki said. "I like him, I like him a lot."

He wasn't about to anoint Bargnani as a star just yet, however.

"He still has a lot to learn. He is a rookie in this league," Nowitzki said. "If he'll just keep his eyes and his ears open, he will improve from year to year. He will be a great player in this league."

Nowitzki wasn't the only one on the Dallas side of the court who was impressed with the Toronto rookie.

Mavs coach Avery Johnson said he came away from the game convinced that the Bargnani is the real deal.

"For a big man, I really like the way he goes to the basket," Johnson said. "He has improved his play so much since the start of the season."

The Raptors are definitely headed in the right direction. They are not quite there yet to pull out close games against top teams, especially as their go to guys are all really young, but in the course of 12 days they almost beat both Phoenix and Dallas which is definite improvement. For a team that had been so bad defensively, they held Phoenix to 100 points (only 40 in the seocnd half) and Dallas below 100.

And I have to get this in of course. I wonder who had the best + on-court stats for both teams this game?

Yeah, that was the only reason that the Mavs won for the most part. The Mavs need to stop messing around with teams like that or it's going to cost them the #1 seed.

I read that their coach told Mo Peterson prior to play to stay with Josh Howard and not go to double Dirk on a play like like that. So it wasn't the coaching, it was just dumbass Peterson ignoring his coach.

Rasho played 16 minutes but AJ went small- sound familiar. When Rasho would come back in, AJ would take Dampier out and he did not play Diop at all.

The Raptors big line-up is better than their small line-up, and teams have been going smaller to try to force Sam to play the smaller line-up. Against Phoenix Sam went big-- really big-- Rasho, Andrea and Bosh- against their small and it worked really well. That is how they held them to 18 third quarter points. I don't know why he didn't do the same against Dallas although Sam does tend to limit Rasho's minutes on back-to-backs and they play today.

The players really seem to love Sam, and I think he is a good motivator. He has a sort of interesting view of how to handle players. He has said that he does not believe that yelling at them is the way to coach. He believes that his team is made up of men of character whom he treats with respect.
