Why is this band popular? I know the popularity has waned as of late but thats just because they're in between albums. The radio play has remained consistent.
But why? I don't get it. I also notice this band is popular amongst the ladies, kinda has the Dave Matthews Effect on them.
But why?
Their debut single "Yellow" was an obvious teenie-bopper version of a bad Radiohead song. I don't remember how they got more popular after that atrocity of a song but my entire chode turned inside outwards once I heard the song "Clocks" then turned outside in when the masses loved and cherished this song as if it actually took longer than 20 seconds to come up with the piano parts backing this song. It bewilders my fucking mind. Why are they so popular?
Their latest single "Talk" has a catchy little guitar part that sounds exactly like it was taken note-for-note from a Smashing Pumpkins song off the b-sides CD Piscies Iscariot. And then we look at the lyrics. For gods sake:
Cause I don't know where I'm going and I wanna talk
I feel like I'm going where I've been before
And I wanna talk
The message forum format will not permit me to paint a picture for you of how incredibly annoying Chris Martin's voice is when he says the word "talk" in this song, but im sure you have all heard the song on the radio before.
It's the one where he says this line over and over again throughout the chorus and towards the end:
Let's talk
Let's talk
Do you wanna talk?
I just
dont
get it.
Why is this band so popular? I had a fucking nightmare of Chris Martin's voice saying "let's talk let's taaaaaalk" and woke up in a cold sweat. No I don't have AIDS. I just listen to the radio all day at work. Today I was forced to walk over and turn the fucker off when this song came on yet again.
Why? Why is this band so popular? Enlighten me. Please.

Bet. I listen to the same, but sometimes I listen to a random radio station that usually plays 80s hits like Information Society's "I wanna know---what you're thinkin----TELL ME WHATS ON YOUR MIND" or New Order's "True Faith", but will stick in the occasional new hit, and they seem to love playing "talk" by coldplay. Then the future is bleak because I've googled and read the lyrics for all of their popular songs and one song is about how Clocks are a valuable item for a human being in today's society, the other is how he wants to walk to a physical point in space-time and engage in the act of conversation.

I bought a regular Sirius receiver for $30 bucks which comes with a car kit which you can install in your ride and another $40 for the home kit, which is another home antenna. Once you buy that shit, you pay $14 a month for the service. I just move my receiver from my car to my home stereo and I'm golden. Like Pony Boy. Stay gold CBF. Stay gold.

But in taking them from Fergie they become yours. Accept your wanting a slice of that.
Wrong again.
1-I wouldn't take, I would chop off with a machete and never touch or gain control of. They would free fall to the surface of the earth. When you go bowling and you knock a few pins down, those pins do not become yours. They are returned to the back of the bowling alley where they are rearranged.
2-Even if choping off the slices would be considered taking, well that doesn't necessarily mean that taking means wanting. If someone is raped in prison and takes it up the ass by a man, that person being raped isn't necessarily wanting it, even though they are taking. And I can assure you that I do not want the slices of what Fergie has got.

Come on now, Coldplay isn't that bad. Their music can be pretty mindless, true, but they've still got some decent tunes that are easy on the ears. Their music sure beats the hell out of most mainstream garbage out there. I don't listen to them nearly as much as other bands (Rage Against the Machine, Keane, Nirvana, Muse, Ben Folds, etc), but they're still good for a listen here and there.

I own the first two Coldplay CDs, and I enjoy listening to them. They make for good, mellow background music.
But, they're completely derivative, unoriginal and bland. And I'd NEVER even attempt to make the argument that they are a good band. They're catchy and relatively unobtrusive. That's about it.

To sum it up lamarcus Everyone has different taste in music and Coldplay is not your type. I think it is funny you chose this band out of all the other crap that is out there. I don't really listen to them but Coldplay is better than most of the stuff on the radio. That's not saying much but I think they are at least somewhat talented and easy to listen to and can actually listen to there songs years after you buy them. When a lot of music today is bought and not listened to after a few months.

You know you can't get any "hot" chick. Please, you already proved your sexual frustration in other threads.
Yeah, you caught me. :rolleyes
I didn't know that being POed about the Spurs playing bad = sexual frustration. If that's the case, there's a lot of frustrated people on the boards right now :lol

If you think its funny t hen you did not read my original post before the topic got out of hand and about metal and shit.
I know other bands suck, and alot of other bands suck more, but I don't understand why they are popular when they write a 6 note piano peice, shift it slightly, and play it over and over again behind a song about frolicing in a land of mystical clocks.
I know they are popular but I'm asking why. Katy was the only one who directly responded to the topic at hand: Because Chris Martin is dreamy and plays piano. Another generic response was that it was mellow music, but I wanted more detailed responses.
Fuck metal, I just wanted some input from those of you who like this so called band to let me know why you like them.

Doesn't Chris Martin have a daughter named Pear, or Pomegranate or something like that?

It's nice to listen to music that isn't 'heavy' all of the time. Coldplay fits that bill in a very melodic and ear-friendly way. There doesn't need to be a big explanation, and nobody short of Clay Aiken fans should have to defend their musical choices.

I hate that The Verve split up, I love them. Remember when Richard Ashcroft sang Bittersweet Symphony with Coldplay at Live 8? Yeah, it was awesome.

They were alright... I think people would have a different opinion of them if they hadn't gotten so mainstream there for a while.
I never got into them all that much, but they were a breath of fresh air considering what was popular in Alternative music at the time.

Coldplay is a good band.
I won't argue for their lyrics. But they obviously have a good handle on how to make great sound. Their guitar tone is never dry, (although that's not necessarily a bad thing), they have interesting motifs in their songs, and they're quite catchy.
Their ways of harmonizing chords is pleasant, and for the most part chris martin knows how to voice lead on piano, so it doesn't sound cheap like some rock piano. He has a knack for resolving the end of his phrases.
To say that Coldplay is overrated because the piano parts are simple, one would have to say the same thing about john lennon's "imagine". Pop music in general, and that includes alot of speed metal too, don't have intricate harmonic progressions.
Unless the specific music you listened to modulates more than three times to a different tonal center, has a transposition, and many sequences like a classical sonata, or even just a bunch of alternating ii-V-I's in order of minor thirds like Giant steps for bebop, then you really don't stand out more than anyone.
Alot of music is just Do-ti anyway.

Coldplay is far from bad music...when you listen to the other crap that seems to be popular now, they look like musical geniuses to be honest.

I don't understand how anyone can listen to this shit. Whenever it comes up on Pandora, it's some of the worst music I hear.
Coldplay's alright. They're not incredibly talented; they've got some good stuff but a lot of it seems to run together. They're definitely on their way down; that chord progression from Clocks can only be whored out so many times.
