View Full Version : Charles Barkley vs Dick Bavetta Race
Kori Ellis
02-16-2007, 02:34 AM
On the evening of Saturday, February 17, former NBA superstar and current TNT basketball analyst Charles Barkley, 43, will challenge veteran NBA referee Dick Bavetta, 67, to a footrace during TNT’s coverage of NBA All-Star Saturday Night presented by EA SPORTS. The distance of the race will be 235 feet (78.3 yards), as Barkley and Bavetta will race baseline to baseline, and then to the half-court line of the regulation basketball court at the Thomas & Mack Arena. In conjunction with the race $50,000, $25,000 from the NBA and $25,000 from TNT, will be donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas.

after seeing that footage of barkley tonight, i'm going with bavetta...i could be wrong but didn't they change the rules again tonight? barkley was talking about how they changed the rules on him and i thought he said it was up the court, back down the court (2 lengths of the court) then half way down the court to total 2.5X the court...kenny clarified it

I don't know if they change it again. I copied what I wrote from a press release.

It should be 94 feet + 94 feet + 47 feet (235 feet).
NBA court is 94 long.

Say what you will about him, but there isn't much doubt that Bavetta is in great physical shape. He's the league's great manipulator, but his curious calls are almost never the result of an inability to keep up with the play.

I'm Sorry Sir Charles you sat the entire yr in front of us on TNT :meeting: doing all the talking you lack the energy and the exercise to beat Ref Dick you might need this one :bike: to catch him to win on this one. But I still wish you good luck. :lol

What it comes down to is speed... if Charles is able to actually maintain a speed, which I don't think he will.. I think Dick might have this one... hes a man on a mission, nothing to lose.

Chuck will win. Dick might win long distance, but this is a short race which leg strength will be required to propel a person faster. Sorry, my dough is on the chunky guy!

If Bavetta has a heart attack or if he wins, no matter what, it's a win-win situation for those who voted for Bavetta. If he wins the race, great, you win vbookie. IF he dies of a heart attack, the Spurs beat the Mavs in the playoffs and win another championship.

its going to be funny watching all of you who bet on bavetta lose your money. if charles actually tries to win, he will win. running 235 feet has nothing to do with conditioning....it has to do with quickness and speed. both of which lie in chuck's corner.

Charles already said on TV that he doesn't expect to win because originally the race was supposed to be just the length of the court. Then, he said they changed it to a length and a half of the court, which he still said he was confident about. But now that it's 2 lengths and 2 halfs, Charles said he doesn't expect to win anymore because "fat guys don't like to run long distances."

Last I heard was it was 3 lengths of the court, that's what they said last night anyway. I saw Chuck's "training" and he's screwed. The only person who said he'd win is Reggie. At least the $'s going to charity. :smokin

the length of this race, which is not what originally was specified, is starting to alarm me a bit. i'm still going with Charles, but this was suppose to only be the length of the court...which chuck would win easily. then it was 2 and back to the center and now it is 3...wtf?

it has to do with the fact that Barkley is in his 40s and Bavetta is in his 60s...thats it. Barkley has way more fast twitch muscle left, even though he is SEVERELY out of shape.
...Barkley is slow and was slow by every standard, its just that Bavetta is an old man. if this were a distance race Bavetta would win.

chuck isn't nor ever was a world class athlete, but he was a world class basketball player. i think you and i may have different ideas on what an athlete is....just b/c you play NBA basketball doesn't mean you are a great athlete. perfect example is Tim Duncan, he may be a great swimmer and basketball player (the best, imo), but he isn't a great athlete. likewise, most pitchers in baseball are not great athletes either, but they are great pitchers...
there are many great athletes all over the world that aren't amazing at one skill, in American sports you are rewarded for being great at a skill set, not necessarily being a great athlete. there is a difference...

1. i'd say the NBA = more like 80% great athletes, but i think you and i understand each other
2. i would think most people made the bet b/c barkley is 43 and bavetta is 67. i am not a professional athlete and would have destroyed barkley in that race...
