Right now he could be developing his younger players in White, Ely and Butler. Instead we have to see Finley, Oberto, Vaughn, Beno and Bonner play during mop up time...

This mother fucker hasn't learned a got damn thing from his losses to the top teams in the NBA....

Is he fukin dumb or what? Why in the fuck do you have 3 youngsters watching in suits???? FUCK IN A man.....

Oberto and Beno could sit on IL

Finley needs more playing time than Butler or White. That old bastard needs to start hitting shots because you know he will be in at critical times in the playoffs.

Why the hell is Ely on the IL instead of Oberto? At least Ely has potential to get better and can't be any worse than Oberto.....how he even made the NBA is beyond me.

He didn't play half bad tonight. I honestly think Beno does better when the expectations for him are at zero. I say he didn't play half bad because I expected him to miss every shot and have 6 turnovers in 10 minutes... :lol

I honestly don't think the final chapter has been written with Beno and the Spurs. Obviously he's here to stay until summertime and he started off with such promise. It seems funny to say that a team can't get an accurate read on a player after 3 years with the team, but Beno has really been so inconsistent that the Spurs might actually benefit from the next few months of evaluating him. I'm sure he'll be showcased in plenty of trade talk during the off-season, but I doubt the Spurs have written him off completely as you suggest.

If you want to make a point that White, Ely and Butler can do more for the team this year than Finley, Oberto, Vaughn, and Beno we would be glad to discuss your reasoning.

If you can't make that point you need to spare us your childish tirades and try to think before you spew. Until the NBA makes a rule that you can activate players in the middle games, your post is shallow and ignorant.

There is not a coach in the league that would want to go into any playoff series with your mentioned projects than with proven role players. The Spurs are just getting to the point where they start to hit their playoff stride. They have won five in a row by playing better team defense and solid bench production.

Back to the issue of this thread...

Pop can't know which games will be blowouts and which games will be in close contention. He can't know who will have off-nights and who will get into foul trouble. His job is to put the 12 players most capable of helping the team win on that bench. If he feels that Oberto gives them a chance over Ely and that Beno gives them a better chance than White, he should go with those players.

Player development is done in practice and during the off-season for Championship teams. If you want the players to develop that badly, hope that one of the big 3 goes down with an injury (Wade-style), then you'll see your James White, Melvin Ely, and Jackie Butler. I, for one, am happy the Spurs don't have to employ developmental players on the regular 12-man roster...

Rating Finley and Oberto "proven role players" only took one beer or two. I will give you, the last two took a case. But with White, Butler and Ely you would pass out before you could get there. :smokin

Usually, players have to show Pop something in practice. Pop normally starts getting his top 8 or 9 rotation players hitting on all cylinders in the stretch run. Bonner needs some playing time following his injury, since he's earned some minutes with his good play this year. White, Butler and Beno are there for injury protection. Probably Ely is too, but that remains to be seen.

I watched White shooting before a Spurs game one time from the wings and corners and he was sorry. Chip wasn't even guarding him. :lol Why the J-White love?

I've been wondering lately why the Spurs called up White rather than let him play in the NBDL. Did they feel thar practicing with NBA talent would benefit him more than playing in the NBDL? A contract issue? In case of a trade?

The first time they called him up (earlier in the season) was because of some injuries. This latest call up was because they wanted him to get in practice time with the Spurs.

I would think Ely will get some sort of shot. He seems motivated. I don't think Pop would throw away a 2nd round pick to get him and not get a chance to see what he can do. But who knows, if Pop doesn't like what he sees in practice then Ely might not get a chance. And, the closer we get to the playoffs the less likely Ely will get a chance to get in to Pop's shrinking rotation.

Last I heard, they are trying to rush Ely back into shape. He's not ready to play yet but he's running his ass off. If the Spurs keep playing well enough to extend garbage time, I expect to see him within the next four or five games.

He developes younger players when they are good.

ie. TD, TP and Manu, otherwise, he lets the better players play.

That is not dumb, that is being realistic.

It's not that they CAN'T play, it's that they aren't better than what the Spurs currently have....in Pop's opinion.

Then why sign players that can't play then?they learn in practice.

garbage time is primarily for starters to rest. if they have to go back in the game, it's not very restful. the garbage players need to be good enough to keep the lead, at least some of the time.
