I'll be honest, I was more geared up for the first 2 games against the Mavs than I am for this one. Maybe it's because I've mellowed out recently, or maybe it's because the Suns wouldn't close that much of a gap for the best record in the West with a victory (would cut it down to 2.5 games?)

This is the game I've been looking forward to since last night around 11PM when I arose out of the bathroom fresh from puking in the toilet after watching Nelson hand my team a butt whipping of epic proportion.

I'm ready for it. It's the first game in awhile that I'm mildly excited about going to.

Before last night's victory against Houston, I would have said the Mavericks were going to win handily. But the Suns looked awesome last night, and I think they'll bring their A-game against Dallas tomorrow.

Barbosa with another big night.

If the last two Dallas-Phoenix games are any indication, I'd say Barbosa doesn't really have a huge problem with Harris. 15-26 shooting in both games, 6-10 on 3FG. And Barbosa's only gotten better. I guess we'll see.

I might be opening a can of worms here, but no one in the league is as fast as Barbosa. No one.

It worked in the playoffs two years ago when Nash scored 48 points and the Suns lost. They eliminated the effect of Stoudemire and guarded the shooters, and the Suns were certainly less efficient offensively.

The reason the Suns lost that game, though, was because they played poorly on the defensive end. Allowed the Mavs to shoot 55%.

I don't expect the Suns to be easy, they could even win, but they will have to be VERY HOT, 55-60% for the entire game, even better in crunch time, but the real tale will be how/if the Mavs bounce back.

No, they'll need to be active on the glass like they were against Houston last night.

And I think if the game went to 4 OT's, it would pretty much be the greatest game in history. That would be fucking awesome.

I've seen them play plenty times. Harris is a blur. One time the camera had trouble keeping up with Harris. Harris is unfortunately one dimensional as he relies too much on his speed.

Nevermind the talking heads, let TMac weigh in on the debate...

Said Houston star Tracy McGrady: "Barbosa kicked our butts tonight. I've never seen anybody as fast as this kid."

Presumably, TMac has played against Harris once or twice.

747 and his factual quotes have added a great deal to the debate. We'll never actually know, so it's great debate fodder, but too many players have mentioned Barbosa's speed of late. It's game-changing, if not breaking, speed. You can't guard it. If his jumper is falling, there's nothing you can do but watch. Case and point, last night.

On the subject of Barbosa.... last year during the CF's Avery said that Barbs was the only player faster than Harris.

Yeah - I remember that camera incident... probably a combination of a lot of factors: Harris's speed, inept camera work, and shock that he took off like that since the Mavs have been slowing the pace down from the Nellie days.

Even if you're wrong (probably so), then this just proves you haven't watched a Suns game since the All-Star break. I've seen a completely different player out of Barbosa - one that finishes better at the rim, looks for his teammates rather than just lowering his head and charging forward (and yes, he often used to pick up offensive fouls), and a player that can take practically anyone in the league off the dribble right now, which takes a lot of the load off Nash.

The reason they probably didn't let him take people 1-on-1 earlier in the season is because he missed about 3 billion point-blank layups. Now, he's finally learning how to lay the ball up softly and drawing fouls from the defenders.

This will be a hell of a game. two of the best teams in the league for the past two or three years facing up in a true playoff atmosphere game. This will be a preview of things to come in the playoffs.....Not necessarily the WC Finals, but possibly earlier, depending on whether or not the Spurs catch the Suns, And personally, I would like nothing better than to see Phoenix get the shit beaten out of them by San Antonio or Dallas. Preferably San Antonio, but ehh. I would like to see the Mavs and Spurs in the WC Finals, because it would be the two most complete teams in the NBA facing up against each other and I think it would be more of an exciting series from an analysis standpoint, not so much an entertainment standpoint. But that is just my opinion.

Udrihlooms
03-14-2007, 03:01 AM
it will be a very close game, i think.

it will probably be decided in the last three minutes, as a test not on whether DAL can defend against PHX (I think they will) but more on if PHX can actaully defend against DAL (I don't think they can).

I'm picking Dallas to win in the last few minutes by 5+ points. Besides this is DAL's home and they are pretty pissed off by their embarassing loss to Nellie :lol

1. Find bootleg copy of 300
2. Fill out/erase/spend hours contemplating my bracket
3. Take a growler in the bathroom at work
4. Cruise Spurstalk to read threads on the pending Spurs/Heat NBA Finals matchup
5. Return to bathroom - forgot to wipe
6. Find new pants
7. Go to game. Sweet.

Last year around this time Steve Nash secured his 2nd MVP by embarrassing Dirk (the other candidate) and the Mavericks on their home floor running circles around them in the 4th qtr doing whatever he wanted in a nationally televised game. Dirk couldn't do anything when it mattered and looked petulant by glaring and screaming at his teammates during the final minutes :lol

I think the same will happen tonight. A healthy Suns team will run the Mavs off the floor and put a dent in the armor.

Harris might just be the best in the league at drawing offensive fouls. He draws a couple most games. What's amazing about it is that he does it while guarding a guy one on one. He doesn't just hang out near the basket (beyond that small circle) and wait for charges like many do (see Steve Nash this season).

I don't see him drawing any offensive fouls tonight though. I don't think he can get in front of Barbosa fast enough and the ref will just call a block if Nash charges into him so it's pointless to even try against him.

The beauty of Devin Harris is that in his second year in the league, the refs decide he's invincible: never draws a blocking foul and always seems to get a 3 point opportunity... funny how all of this started happening about Game 2 of the 2006 WCSF... right around the time "bear-hug" became a popular term...

hmmm one of the fastest guys in the league is constantly flopping for an offensive foul?

How about he's so fast to get into that position to give him a chance to get an offensive foul? Slo - mo is Slo - mo....don't rely on that for real time speed and judgment.

The way we beat the team last year was just shutting down nash and letting the rest of the team bet us, and they didn't.

Diaw put up Amare's numbers...so I think we can safely say that we can kind of cancel out that guy as well.

Amare does have the potential to get us in major foul trouble though, and that's whats worrying me the most.

Sure, Diaw gave you like 75% of "Amare's numbers" except for the trips to the FT line (and the fact that Diaw has incredible passing skills)... you don't address what it will be like with BOTH of them out there now? Remember - when Diaw fouled out in the 4th quarter of the December game, the Mavs went on a huge run and the Suns' offense stalled... he and Amare need to stay out of foul trouble for the Suns to win.

You get your years "straight". Steve Nash won his 2nd MVP last year and he pretty much solidified it by shitting on Dirk and the Mavs in their building around this time last year.

http://www.nba.com/games/20060305/PHXDAL/recap.html

The driving force remains Nash, the reigning NBA MVP who again victimized his former team and good buddy Dirk Nowitzki. He orchestrated an offense that rang up 34 points in the fourth quarter and dealt Dallas its first home loss since December 30 vs. Golden State.

"It was a little more than a normal game in that we had a win streak going and they had a home streak going and the fact that they've had a terrific year," Nash said. "It's a good win for us to beat a really good team on their home floor."

Wouldn't surprise me to see it happen again.

That is pretty much the only way the Mavs can beat the Suns anyway.

They have to junk up the game, be physical, and grab and hold as much as they can. The mavs have enough depth to use their fouls and win that way.
If they get into a free flowing game the Suns will most likely run them over.

If this game comes down to a couple possessions (6pts or less) it's not going to determine that one team is better than the other. Both teams are very evenly match. Early in the season the Suns were having a hard time holding late leads. Now they seem to have that solved.

Let's not forget that the Mavs have a long home streak on the line.

If it's a blow out for either team, this late in the season, then i think it will establish that team as the one to beat. They still meet up once more in PHX, but by then the seedings should be set.

Going to be a great game.

The Suns do not get blown out. Not until Nash went out did they suffer a double digit loss. And, they've only had two double digit losses all season. I'd be mighty surprised if the Mavs blow them out.

Xylus
03-14-2007, 08:49 PM
If Dallas gets back in this game, it won't be because the Suns give up leads all the time. That's a common misconception about Phoenix, something they haven't been prone to do since the first month of the season. If the Suns give up a big lead, it'll be because Dallas is a great team, capable of erasing big leads.

The last time these two teams played, Dallas had two 13-point leads at different points in the game, and the Suns erased both leads. Doesn't mean anything.

Suns will lose thanks to the Mavericks offensive rebounding. Say what you will about them getting some favorable bounces, which they have, but unless Amare mans up and becomes the rebounding beast that pulled down consecutive 15+ efforts, this team doesn't stand a chance. Mavs have the momentum and now want this win. They now feel they can win, despite sucking for 20 minutes of the game.

Keys to winning: Diaw doesn't foul out; Suns hit the defensive boards like they did in the first 5 minutes of the game.

The perimeter players for the Mavs have so many rebounds because their shots have been so flat, they bounce over the Suns heads and right back to them. It really sucks. It's happened at least three times. However, the Suns must body up. I'd settle for Amare being Amare and fouling out in the late third. he needs to play hard, on both ends, and just control the paint. He started great, then, thanks to foul trouble, became very tentative.

They just said Harris is unlikely to return. Sucks. I like him. Suck more, because Stackhouse eats Barbosa alive. He's a real bad matchup when Phoenix goes small.

Amare with an and-1... hopefully that starts him off.

He has 15 points and 1 less rebound then Dampier. A better question where is Diaw.

Mavs are hustling more than the Suns now. When Dampier is able to slide in and get a rebound.. or the Mavs get a rebound off a miss FT that's hustle.. Something the Suns have lost... Not to mention composure..

The refs seem to go with whoever has the momentum. Now Dallas is getting all the calls. :D

I leave and all hell breaks loose. Guess Phoenix is going to have to pull a comeback and break Dallas's hearts.

This is why Phoenix will not win a championship. They give up SO many offensive boards (it makes me appreciate the Spurs' rebounding) and they cannot play defense. Not to mention they collapse when the other team locks down.
