Stoudemire, Diaw suspended one game
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns//articles/0515sunssuspension-ON.html
The Arizona Repbulic
May. 15, 2007 12:21 PM
The NBA today suspended Suns forwards Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw one game for leaving the bench during a skirmish that took place during the closing minutes of Game 4 in San Antonio.
Stoudemire and Diaw will not play in Wednesday's Game5 of the Western Conference semifinals at US Airways Center.
The best-of-seven series — already known for its physical nature — is tied 2-2.
Robert Horry was suspended two games. The Spurs veteran started the scuffle with a hard foul on Suns guard Steve Nash with 18.2 seconds left in Phoenix's 104-98 win Monday.
Horry received a 1st Flagrant Type 2 foul and was ejected. Stoudemire and Diaw left the bench, they claim, for different reasons. Stoudemire said he was walking to the scorer's table to check into the game. Diaw said he was just checking to see if Nash was OK.
"I don't think I really came off the bench," Diaw said before the suspension was announced. "I just wanted to see if Steve was hurt."
NBA rules state that during an altercation, "all players not participating in the game must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined up to $35,000. The suspensions will commence prior to the start of their next game."
The suspensions leave the Suns shorthanded and without their leading scorer. Stoudemire has averaged 23.5 points and 10.3 rebounds against the Spurs, despite recent foul trouble limiting his minutes. He was the only Suns player to participate in every game this season, regular-season and playoffs combined.
Diaw has averaged 6.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 22.8 minutes. Along with Leandro Barbosa, he is often the first Suns reserve off the bench.
Suns coach Mike D'Antoni wasn't immediately available to comment on the suspensions.
After practice earlier Tuesday, D'Antoni said he wasn't sure who would join his usual eight-man rotation if Stoudemire and Diaw can't play. James Jones or Leandro Barbosa could join Nash, Raja Bell, Kurt Thomas and Shawn Marion in the lineup.
"I'm not there yet, I don't even want to think about it,'' he said. "Somebody's going to log some minutes, I know that much.''
Possibilities include Pat Burke and Jalen Rose.
Rose, a veteran with Finals experience, hasn't played in the Western Conference semifinals, but played nine minutes in Game 2 against the Lakers.
"Everybody feels ready, but until you get out there .. you have to wait and see,'' Rose said.

PHOENIX -- Phoenix center Amare Stoudemire and teammate Boris Diaw have been suspended for one game for leaving the bench after Robert Horry's hard foul of Steve Nash in Game 4 of the Suns' Western Conference semifinal against San Antonio, a person with knowledge of the penalty said Tuesday.
Horry was suspended for two games after knocking Nash into the scorer's table with 18 seconds remaining in the Suns' 104-98 victory in San Antonio Monday night that evened the best-of-seven series 2-2, said the person, who sought anonymity because the official announcement had not yet been made.

I sort of understand Spurs fans wanting the win any way they can get it, but if you're honest, even Spurs fans can agree on this: If the Spurs win game 5 and then the series, it's tainted. You may not agree that it's "unfair," since you can point to the black and white rule, and maybe you won't agree that Horry "caused" the suspensions, since Amare and Diaw are ultimately responsible for their own actions, but nothing will change the fact that you didn't play the Suns at full strength.

They had no choice at all the rule is the rule. I kept citing the Knicks in 97 when they lost basically half their team over a situation like this. They can and i think will change the rule in the offseason but they can't make the exemption during a series like this they had to suspend them.

Considering that no fight was started, however, suspending Stoudemire and Diaw was weak. I don't care about the "rules are rules" crap some Spurs fans are throwing around. It doesn't matter if the Spurs benefit or the Suns benefit or whatever. All that matter is that all three broke rules and in the case of Diaw and Stoudemire the rule they broke warrants an automatic one game suspension. The NBA didn't want to do it, but they had no choice. If they let them slide, they contradict everything they've been doing to stop fights in the last 10 years and open up all kinds of worm holes from here on out that would have ended up in players possibly suing the league for discrimination if they were suspended for breaking a rule when these two were let to slide free.

I agree. I'm not happy at all about this. I don't want to win this way. I think the refs will totally overcompinsate now and give the SUNS every call imaginable in Game 5. The Big Three should be ready for a lot of non-called hacks.

The NBA just handed the series to the Spurs. No doubt. We got the best end of the stick. Horry causes all of this crap and we get the best end of the deal. WOW.
Tap the brakes a bit guys. Nothing is assured. Hell, the Spurs dominated the Suns for the majority of Game #4 and still lost in the final 2:30.
The Suns will undoubtedly play with surging emotion and with a "nothing to lose"-type attitude. Plus, Horry is a very important piece to what the Spurs do. Now, he's gone for 2 games.
I wouldn't exactly hand to series over to the Spurs yet.

PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix center Amare Stoudemire and teammate Boris Diaw were suspended Tuesday for one game for leaving the bench after Robert Horry's flagrant foul of Steve Nash in Game 4 of the Suns' Western Conference semifinal against San Antonio.
The NBA also announced Horry was suspended for two games for knocking Nash into the scorer's table with 18 seconds remaining in the Suns' 104-98 victory at San Antonio on Monday night. Phoenix's victory evened the series at 2-2.
All three players will miss Wednesday night's Game 5 in Phoenix of what has been a rough, intense showdown between two of the best teams in the NBA. Horry also will miss Friday night's Game 6 in San Antonio.
Horry was suspended for flagrantly fouling Nash and striking Raja Bell about the shoulders with a forearm, NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson said in a statement. Stoudemire and Diaw were suspended for leaving "the immediate vicinity of their bench" during the altercation.

Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame.
Robert Horry takes a cheapshot and the Spurs are rewarded with having two of Phoenix's top players suspended. Horry should have been suspended one game, but thats IT. His hard foul wasn't much more than just physical playoff basketball, but in combination with his elbow, I can see it meriting a one game suspension. Considering that no fight was started, however, suspending Stoudemire and Diaw was weak. I don't care about the "rules are rules" crap some Spurs fans are throwing around. No harm was done, and no punches thrown by them. Why ruin a great series with controversy, and reward a borderline cheapshot by Horry? Stupid move by David Stern.
Horry and the Spurs are not responsible for the Suns reactions to what happened. This situation sucks but they came out on the court and they knew the rule said that they can't.

Yeah - Horry's fucking foul wasn't that bad.
This is bad news for Spurs fans though. Amare isn't what makes that team go round. Neither is Diaw. Its Nash. Nash can easily beat the Spurs on his own - he did it last night.
The chip that should have been on the Spurs shoulder after a loss is now squarly on the shoulder of the Suns. When you add in how poorly the Spurs have fared against shorthanded teams then I'm really not happy about this one bit.
Not good news AT ALL.
The Spurs have a little track record in overlooking short handed teams, but I think that's more in the regular season. I think tomorrow night's game is so pivotal to the Spurs as well, and considering how awful they have to know they played last night in the 4th quarter and the start of the game, they will come out fired up regardless.
But I agree that it creates a nasty chip on Phoenix's shoulders. Their fans are going to be loco!

Just like one game without Duncan would end you at this point. We all know whoever wins game 5 is taking the series.
Agreed, we lose Duncan we go nowhere.
And yes, I agree that game 5 will likely determine the series.
But, I don't think the Suns are out of it, far from it. Nash is brilliant, the best PG in the league. I don't for a minute under estimate him or the rest of your team.
Why are you? Is Amare that critical that you can't win a must win-at home- without him?

You know that if Stern had his choice hed go for the Suns/ratings. This has NOTHING to do with Stern wanting one team or another to win it. Its just Stern being his strict self and following the rule to the letter. Is it right? I dunno. I dont agree with the suspensions, but according the the rule, its a suspension. Its kinda a dumb rule (ie: the "tuck rule"). Maybe this will help bring some change to the rulebook.

Law is not justice, those are quite different concepts, e.g., you can drive above speed limit at night when there is no one on the highway and get fined.
But let us move on to the next game : Spurs really have to win it ! What will be PHX's lineup ?

I'm ambivalent about the whole thing. I mean you can go around and around with it forever.
A) I don't agree with the Amare/Diaw suspensions. I don't want to win this way.
1. But a rule is a rule.
B) I'm incredibly disappointed in Horry for doing what he did.
1. But he only did it because of a no-call at the other end.
C) The Amare/Diaw thing wouldn't have happened if the Horry thing didn't happen.
1. The Horry thing wouldn't happen if the refs just called a decent game.
2. Even despite the refs we could've won if Pop coached a smarter game
3. Or if the big three played worth a shit in the final period, in spite of Pop.
This whole series has me in a bad mood. I'm not happy with any aspect of it. I'm glad Brent Barry is playing well and contributing for us, but I wish every game wouldn't come down to the refs/Stern. I wish Phx's players and coaches wouldn't whine about calls after every loss. It's one thing for fans to do so, but they should be above it. This whole series has been irreversibly tainted now and no matter what happens this won't be a great, memorable playoffs for us.

Oh, it would be hilarious? So it's unjust and SO unfair for the Suns but if the situation were reversed it would be funny and you wouldn't give two shits. Just label yourself a hater and take off that disguise of rallying for fairness in the NBA.

Damn Horry is the clutchest player to have every played in NBA.
I think Stu Jackson realized that Game 4 was horribly officiated in Suns favour, so he didn't make a big fuss about suspending the Suns. The NBA gods are trying to be fair.

Totally agree with your analogy.
As for the lineup, I'd imagine that it would be Nash-Bell-James Jones-Marion-Thomas. The guy who will should be get some minutes will be Pat Burke off the Bench.
The X Factor for us would be Jalen Rose, too see if he can step it up.

I can understand that, but you know I think they would only throw that at us IF we won the whole shabang. And frankly, we're not guaranteed that. And even IF we did win the whole thing the reflection of that 4th trophy would drown out any crying Suns fans did.

In looking at the Suns' options for Game 5, it would seem to me that D'Antoni's best option is to go small -- really, really small. Frankly, teams that can go small like that have given the Spurs fits. Milwaukee did it twice this year with tremendous success. I can't see that D'Antoni will even try to match size-for-size. Go small, keep trying to push the ball, take every shot that you get and see what happens.
I'm not sold on the idea that Game 5 will somehow be a walkover for the Spurs.

Oh now act like 90% of you were not screaming for Amare and Diaw to be suspended. Look at the forum names. You all looked like a bunch of bitches that were relying on this suspension.
Like I said, you lose Duncan, you go nowhere. We lose Amare AND Diaw (his only replacement on the bench), we go nowhere. James Jones is starting.
So like I said, good luck in the WCF.

I understand the giddiness of some of the fans here, but the problem is that the human side of sports was completely ignored in this case. Did Duncan, when he clearly came of the bench, with Bowen behind him, think to himself "Oh, let's see, no altercation here, let me go on the court to see if I can help my teammate"? Of course not, if you think so you are just deluding yourself. So calling Amare and Diaw stupid, ignorant, etc. is really ignoring the fact that the same thing happened on the other bench 90 minutes earlier. And for the exact same reason. The fact that Elson and Jones didn't get into a shoving match (which is a good thing) saved the Spurs from the same predicament the Suns are in.... Just my two cents. Call it fate, fortune, or what have you. Amare wasn't looking to go after Horry, just as Duncan wasn't looking to go after Jones. But it is done with.

Yeah...that's why I said would, not will...even if the Spurs win this series, they still have to get by the Jazz and then the winner of the East (probably the Pistons).
