Fox News Apologizes for Tape Goof

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK — Fox News Channel apologized on-air Tuesday for running tape of a different congressman while reporting Monday on the indictment of Rep. William J. Jefferson on bribery charges.

The network ran footage of House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers of Michigan instead of Jefferson. Both congressmen are black.

Fox blamed the mistake on a 22-year-old production assistant hurriedly grabbing a wrong videotape. Fox's Washington bureau chief, Brian Wilson, said he was mortified by the error.

On Tuesday, Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum said about the Jefferson story: "We mistakenly ran the wrong videotape accompanying that story and we apologize for that error."

The apology apparently wasn't accepted by Conyers.

"Fox News has a history of inappropriate on-air mistakes that are neither fair, nor balanced," he said Tuesday. "This type of disrespect for people of color should no longer be tolerated. I am personally offended by the network's complete disregard for accuracy in reporting and lackluster on-air apology."

Wilson said he called Conyers' office on Tuesday to apologize. He said he spoke to a press secretary and asked what he could do to make amends, including coming to Conyers' office to apologize in person. No one got back to him, he said.

Conyers' press representative, Melanie Roussell, said the congressman was upset that Fox's on-air apology did not say specifically what the mistake was.

Fox News Channel has become a political issue itself recently, with Democratic presidential candidates refusing to appear in a debate sponsored by the network.

I think it would be best for everyone concerned if we simply categorized all content from FOX News as "entertainment"...sort of a Colbert Report without self-awareness.

Since i am talking about only stewart, yes i agree.
I agree, having the freedom of denying trying to pass propaganda on the basis of it being done under the guise of shits and giggles knowing full well that a good portion of your audience does take you seriously as hard news, and then bitching about other programs as dividing the nation and raising more partisan hatred, while acting like an indignant self congradulating attention whore, is very entertaining. But i think writing run on sentences is more entertaining, respectful and relevant to this thread.

Yeah, "The Daily Show" would be much more watchable if they nixed the live studio audience for the canned laughter they use on "The 1/2 Hour News Hour". Even Dennis Miller is funnier when he's being interviewed by Jon Stewart than when he gets to sermonize on the Fox News clone.

I'm sorry, Fox News's crappy comedy show does not compare to the Daily show.. John stewart is still a self loving attention whore blowhard and the audience that takes his comedy show serious is pathetic wether Fox news has a cooking show, or a samurai bike expo

Kind of Like Xray could turn to Olberman and Matthews to know that he's not clinically retarded as being an example of what you do to make you think your ideology is superior. You compare your ideology by watching the lowest form of the opposite.

I used to watch whannity and colmes and the o'reilly show all of the time. partly because I rarely agreed with them and their shows were always good for a few laughs. Now I usually can stomach only about 5minutes of each show.. these fellows seem to know everything and are always 100% correct...think about that. if you were told that on of your friends knew a guy who knew everything and he was 100% right all of the time. you would say bullshit and would stay away from the annoying blowhard who calims to know everything.. yet these guys are heroes to the masses on the right..

Fake News? It's more like real news with the intention of comedy and not journalism. That's the way it was intended to be, problem is John Stewart thinks he is somehow contributing to the political process with his show and has gotten arrogant. Sad thing is most of his listeners don't take it as a fake news show. Him being from Comedy Central has nothing to do with me liking him or not. He's a douche outside of Comedy Central when he goes on Cnn and opens his mouth.

My take on stewart was not intended on you, unless you do take him like some sort of truth. WHich it seems sadly that you do, since you're obviously butthurt because i don't like him. Just look at the number of post you have on this thread.

I get my news from wide variety of sources; TV and print (well...online print) News and I take care to check in with both sides of the conventionally defined ideological spectrum for news and opinion. As I said in an earlier post, I watch Stewart/Colbert for laughs. I'm not "butthurt" that you don't like him, I'm curious as to why he causes you to go apeshit when the media is full of far worse blowhards who do pretend to be journalists and demand to be taken seriously.

I wouldn't call The Daily Show or Colbert Report "fake" news. They don't fabricate news stories and then report them. They ridicule real political news stories as well as political stations like CNN and Fox News.

I think Stewart and Colbert are brilliant and they do a good job of trying to change the way America views politics. Everyone has an agenda and I think theirs is pretty good..not to mention funny as hell.

Who doesn't laugh when Stewart ridicules Bush on something stupid he does?
