This is incredibly late, but I think we need to make Rangers-Astros more of a rivalry. So I'm gonna start seriously talking shit to all the Houston ASStros fans here.

Especially considering the Orioles scored more in one night than the Astros did during the 4-game series they won in 2006.

I have a sign bet going with A-Train, whoever's team finishes with the worst record has to sport a sig of the other's choosing. So far, Astros are one back in the loss column but have played one more game than the Rangers. So it's a virtual tie right now to see who will stink it up less down the wire.
I wonder if today's shakeups will have an adverse affect on the Astros. My sig can only hope! :lol

Silver boots, gold boots... who gives a fuck?
Seriously, the Rangers are a better team than the Astros, but they may finish with a worse record because they have to play legitimate teams like the Angels, Mariners, Red Sox, Yankees, Indians, etc. They don't have the luxury of playing shitty NL teams all the time with barely .500 records like the Cardinals, Cubs, and Brewers. From what I recall, the Rangers owned the Brewers in their series this year, and that was back when the Rangers were really sucking and the Brewers were actually doing well. They were 9-6 in interleague play at a time when they were worse than they are now. Now that the Rangers pitching staff has solidified somewhat they would destroy anyone in the NL Central.

:lol Obviously you haven't watched the Rangers of late and are going by what you have heard in the media for the last several years. The Rangers bullpen is much more consistent than the Astros, and since the All Star game the defense is at least as good if not better. It was the starting pitching and hitting that has been the biggest problem this year. That said, since the trading deadline the Rangers have had fairly consistent starting pitching but not much hitting. Before the 30 run game against the O's the Rangers had not scored 30 runs in the previous 9 games combined, and lost a lot of of 2-1, 3-2, and even a couple of 1-0 games.

I wasn't saying the Rangers have better starting pitching, I was saying they have a better, more consistent bullpen and possibly better defense. I was also saying that their hitting was better than the Astros, but not by much.
The starting pitching and the bats were the reason they dug a huge hole in April-May-June and had to blow up the team. That said, both are starting to turn the corner. 2008 will show whether they are making real progress or if they will find a way to fuck it up all over again.

Until recently, it was the player's choice which cap they would wear, and the players did not always make the most popular choice. For example, Nolan Ryan entered the Hall in 1999 wearing a Texas Rangers cap on his plaque, even though he only spent five seasons with the Rangers, and had longer and more successful tenures with the Astros (nine seasons, 1980–88) and Angels (eight seasons, 1972–79), and won his only championship as a member of the Mets in 1969. He did however, get his 5000th strikeout, 300th win, and his last two no-hitters as a Ranger, which is why Ryan chose to go in as a Ranger.
He chose to wear a Rangers cap for his HOF plaque to reflect his Texas heritage, as well as the fact that his 300th win, 5000th strikeout, and last two no-hitters came as a Ranger.
Despite Ryan's longevity, his place among the game's greats has been questioned.[5][6] A major complaint against Ryan is his low winning percentage, .526. Statistical comparisons with Walter Johnson, Ferguson Jenkins, Lefty Grove and other Hall of Fame pitchers have been run, showing that Ryan was only slightly better, in winning percentage, than the teams he played on. These studies have shown that despite the common belief that Ryan played mostly for bad teams, his teams (disregarding Ryan's own wins and losses) had a .503 winning percentage over his career (.506, if you disregard the 1966 New York Mets for whom he pitched three innings and who lost 95 games). Thus, Ryan's winning percentage was only .023 better than the teams for which he played. (By comparison, Walter Johnson, whose Washington Senators didn't win a pennant until his 18th season, was .107 better than the teams on which he played.) Other Hall of Fame pitchers studied in this respect fare worse than Johnson, but better than Ryan. Bill James's Historical Baseball Abstract shows that only a few Hall of Fame starting pitchers do worse than Ryan in this area. Notably, only two teams (the 1973 New York Mets and the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals) have reached the World Series with a winning percentage worse than Ryan's lifetime percentage.

Judging a pitcher by winning % is a stupid old fashioned criteria used by stupid old-fashioned people. It's bullshit ideas like this that keeps one of the greatest pitchers of all time (and former Rangers great) Bert Blyleven from the HOF.
Now, onto the smack. The Rangers have a better ML team, better minor league system, better owner, better record, plays in a better league and oh yean, we got that little thing we call "the boot."

Rangers have won 10 of their last twelve and five in a row. It gets tough now on road for something like 18 of the last games, especially with a doubleheader against Detroit looming. If the Astros are going to get back in this bet, the time is now. Six behind in win column, seven in loss column does not bode well ...

Who exactly would be on an All-Time Astros team? There are so few players in Astros history who really have phenomenal offensive numbers, so there are some defensive-minded guys who have to be in that lineup. Here's my stab at it:
C -- Alan Ashby
1B -- Jeff Bagwell
2B -- Craig Biggio
3B -- Ken Caminiti
SS -- Dickie Thon
LF -- Jose Cruz
CF -- Cesar Cedeno
RF -- Lance Berkman
BN -- Jim Wynn
BN -- Moises Alou
BN -- Craig Reynolds/Roger Metzger
BN -- Glenn Davis
BN -- Brad Ausmus
BN -- Joe Morgan
The historically pedestrian numbers of the Astros greatest lineup suggests strongly to me that the major difference between the Astros and the Rangers has always been the Astros strong pitching and defense. That might explain why the Astros have substantially more historical success than the Rangers do. In any event, the Astros pitching staff is much easier to put together:
SP -- J.R. Richard
SP -- Mike Scott
SP -- Joe Niekro
SP -- Larry Dierker
SP -- Roy Oswalt
RP -- Billy Wagner
RP -- Dave Smith
RP -- Joe Sambito
RP -- Octavio Dotel
RP -- Larry Andersen
or something like that. Certainly not a team with bigger names than the Rangers' team; but perhaps a team with more game than the Rangers' team -- and certainly much longer resumes when it comes to team successes.

I don't have a dog in the fight -- I'm more trying to push the conversation with my posts; but for the record, monoslyab1k has already claimed Ryan for the Rangers and says that a player can only be on one side or the other. It's probably okay for the Astros, since there are a number of good starting pitchers to pull from in Astros' history.

I didn't actually get to go. We had discussed making a trip with my aunt and some cousins to go see the game and were playing it by ear until we got there, since my uncle is a tax advisor to Peter Angelos and tickets to Orioles games are, therefore, relatively easy to come by. In the end, too many were too tired to make the trip (about a 70 minute drive from where we were) and it was a school night, so we didn't go. :depressed
In any event, I missed O's and Devil Rays, though so it wasn't like I missed a great deal; and, per usual, the Orioles lost.

I am kinda cheering for the Orioles at this point, cus I have Nick Markakis on my fantasy team, lol. I had Guthrie but waived him today because it looks like he is out for the season. Might be rough from here on out for your birds, but hope springs eternal in March :)

I probably should have gone, but there's an odd family aversion to going to Suns games these days and I've never really asked about it because there are (strangely) a lot of other things to do when I'm in Hagerstown.

Sounds like a great time -- I love minor league baseball and don't go enough to be quite frank about it. I should go tomorrow night. . . . .

Good luck with that.
I recently bought DVD's of the 1979 World Series just to have some meaningful games involving the O's to watch -- of course, they broke my heart back then too (who loses a 3 games to 1 lead in a World Series with home field advantage? The 1979 Orioles, for one!!!).

I have been to Baltimore a few times when I used to live in Virginia, but never Hagerstown.

There are still great seats left, the lower level box seats are only $10.50 with taxes and fees. It is also Game 1 of the Texas League Championship Series, they finished the sweep of Frisco on Friday when I went, was a great time. Some really great players, including Chase Headley, who one of the organizations I work for ranked no. 19 in all of the minors recently.
Not sure where we are sitting cus I have to wait and see if my brother is going with us or his friends before we buy but I am gonna try and get near the bullpen. My nephews both have a foul ball now, and they want autographs.
I started a thread about this last week and not a single reply :lol Guess nobody else likes minor league baseball :(

I'm not sure that anyone just happens upon Hagerstown. It's about 70 miles west of Baltimore and sits in an Appalaichian valley. It's right in the skinniest part of Maryland -- Interstate 81 runs through Hagerstown, but from the time you enter Maryland from West Virginia and the time you enter Pennsylvania from Maryland, you cover about 11 miles of land.
It's a really nice place to me, and I love going there to see family, but it's sort of like someone visiting Texas and going to San Angelo.
Tourism is up a bit of late because Prime outlets built an outlet mall that isn't quite as big as the complex in San Marcos and now bargain shoppers flock to Hagerstown to take advantage. It's also a good place for Civil War buffs to go, since it's about a 10 minute drive from Sharpsburg (site of the Antietam battlefield) and no more than an hour to sites like Harper's Ferry and Gettysburg. Still, it's not exactly flush with touristy sorts of things to do.

I wasn't here last week -- I might have responded otherwise. In any event, I'm not sure that work obligations will allow me to go, but if I decide that I can go, I'll post something to advise that I'm going so that you can steer clear!!

That will forever trip me out about the east coast, how you can drive from one state to the next in minutes. I once had a date with a guy who lived in Delaware, he drove to Jersey to pick me up, and we went out on our date -- in Philadelphia! :lmao Took less than an hour driving each way. Unbelievable.

I lived about 20 minutes from Williamsburg at one point (in Newport News) so the history thing in DC/MD/NoVA does nothing for me really, which I suppose is why I never really explored that option.

But if you look anything like your avatar, I would have steered clear anyways. :nope :lol

Let's settle this once and for all.....a battle between the All-Time Rangers team vs. All-Time ASStros team. Best player at each position, and we'll see who's better.
This is for the Golden Silver Boot!
Here's what I think the Texas Team would be -

SS - Alex Rodriguez
3B - Buddy Bell
LF - Juan Gonzalez
CF - Rusty Greer
RF - Ruben Sierra
DH - Rafael Palmeiro
SP - Nolan Ryan
SU - Otsuka
CL - John Wetteland
BEAT THAT you stupid ASStrolls fans! HA HA!
Not bad, mine would be.

that's great. i'm gonna go ahead and cast a shadow of doubt on Biggio, Berkman, and Alou while I'm at it.
Now it's 5 Astros and 3 Rangers. Rangers are less roided up now. Sweet.
alou probably only took supplements so pissing on his hands would be more effective.

Cool, I had no idea there was another Spurs fans there. Sometimes I feel lost amidst names like "the dirkatron" and anything with a variation of the number 41 in it. :lol Good to know there are other Rangers/Spurs fans out there. :tu
