Nice find. I wonder if that's true or just Spurs.com making something up. I haven't seen it reported anywhere.

I forgot if there was another number 25 on the roster when the Spurs signed Horry. If there wasn't, I wonder why he didn't take it back then.

It would be pretty damn cool to see Horry go back to his retro number 25.

I'm having someone try to verify with the Spurs that he's actually switching.

That'd be pretty sweet, if it's true. See Rob kick it old school, and all that good stuff.

I find too a little strange that Spurs haven't done a press conference for Udoka and Mahinmi. Udoka has only had a unofficial press conf and nothing at all for Mahinmi.
Are they waiting to sign someone else (likely Williams to do one) or will they do no press conf at all ?

They had a press conference about Mahinmi (though he wasn't present).

Thanks.

edit after seing it : It's not a real press conf. It's more an interview. I'm talking of a press conf where the GM and the player is sitting in a press conf room like they did with Splitter this summer.

I guess that a reason why Horry change his number is to go back to his college number to end his career. It's a way to close the loop.

He should have started to think about it after the Udoka signing.

I've always thought that players don't change their numbers too easily. Superstition, whatever. I'm curious as to why he'll do it. Even to close it out for his last year it seems drastic.

Maybe they're not as attached to their numbers as I thought.

This is from a summary I did of a Robert Horry appearance I went to at Ingram park mall this past December:

* Robert talked about how he used to wear the # 25 and how when he wears it again, that is how fans will know it is his last year. He said, " I came in wearing # 25 and I want to go out wearing number 25."

* Rob says the rumors about him retiring after this year are untrue. He wants to play three more years- all of them for the Spurs.

Maybe he changed his mind about the three year part.

You and I were at the same event. :)

I am sitting here laughing because when I saw Rob was wearing #25 this year, I teared up.

But then I had to laugh because I never imagined I would be crying at the thought of Robert Horry retiring.
I remember how I couldn't stand him back in the day. How times have changed! :lol

Kerr played with the Spurs through the 2002-03 season...not 2005.

When Horry came to the Spurs for the 2003-04 season, nobody was wearing #25. Horry wore 25 for his 4 years with the Rockets, he wore 25 in PHX after the Barkley trade with Houston, then later that year after the famous towel throwing incident with Horry and his move to the Lakers, he went to #5. He came to the Spurs and chose #5 as he had worn with the Lakers.

I did look back to see when Horry signed with the Spurs and it was announced on July 23, 2003. At that time, Steve Kerr was pondering retirement but had not officially decided to retire...having been quoted in June of '03 that he was "90 percent certain he would retire". Kerr officially retired 2 weeks after Horry was signed by the Spurs so technically, I guess one could say Kerr still wore #25 when Horry signed.

I'm not sad at all about Horry likely retiring in one year.
He has had an awesome and very long career.
I rather see a great player retiring after a good year(like Robinson) than a great player playing too much seasons and retiring after a crappy year (like Payton).
I just hope the last year of Horry's career will be nice (with a ring :) ).

Sweet!
I've been out of town all week at a meeting, I wouldn't have known about this if Angel hadn't text'd me to let me know. Gotta keep up on my Horry news! I'm actually excited about Robert going back to #25. He wore that at Alabama and when he played for the Rockets ... and Phoenix but we try to forget that. He had to switch to #5 when he went to the Lakers because Gail Goodrich has #25 retired with the Lakers.
