View Full Version : Patriots Punish Pokes

The ironic thing about it was that Dallas was supposed to be this big second half team. What happened? What happened is that they ran across an offense that is almost unstoppable. Does anyone remember how many times the Patriots punted in this game? Once, twice? Tom Brady put on a show so outstanding that the pokes really had no shot in this one. I mean five touchdowns? C'mon. Dallas was so glaringly outclassed and outplayed in the game that it was laughable. And how about the dozen or so penalties Dallas received? Talk about being intimidated out of your boots. New England had this heavily overrated Dallas team committing infractions seemingly on every play. Suffice it to say that it was literally men against 'Boys out there tonight. And as far as the running up the score allegations, don't think that Phillips would not have done the exact same if the roles were reversed. What I saw was a beatdown of immense proportions. A Texas Stadium whup ass for all time. Only this time it was the pokes getting their overhyped, high-flying asses whupped. Bravo New England.

i wouldnt call the cowboys overrated. they stayed in the game far longer than i expected. they were probably two big plays away from turning this into a nailbiter.

the cowboys will win the NFC easily

I don't know about winning the conference so easily. The Redskins, Packers and surely Seattle will have something to say about it.

The Redskins lost to Green Bay today. Seattle is getting it's ass handed to them by the Saints, the Saints for god's sake.

It's not going to be as hard as you make it out to be.

At least not by the teams you've pointed out.

Gotta give a team credit when they convert that many third downs. I don't think you can beat a bad team very often when you can't stop them on third down. The offense might have been able to give the defense some rest, but Romo didn't look remotely comfortable for the first quarter, probably due to the interceptions on Monday, and it was really too late by the time they got it sort of going. They played a very sloppy game and had a chance into the second half, but the Pats did a great job answering every challenge.

I agree about the stupid running up the score accusations. If they didn't want the Pats to score that last touchdown they shouldn't have called a timeout, or they could have perhaps stopped them. Why people get bent out of shape about the least significant touchdown of the game I have no idea. It doesn't matter to me how many points they lost by.

The Cowboys got a chance to find out how good they are, and they have some work to do. Nice to find that out now instead of later. I have a hard time being unhappy when they are tied for home field advantage and about as healthy as anyone after six weeks though. I like their chances against anyone in the NFC right now, and they clearly have room to improve. The Cowboys have a chance to be relevant going into the second half of the season.

This loss doesn't mean the Cowboys aren't good. It means the Patriots were really better. The gap between the top of the AFC to the top of the NFC was well illustrated today.

Fourth and goal from the 5 down 11 I think it was why didn't they just go for it? Also Classy of the cheaters to run up the score at the end of the game.

Yeah, but the gap isn't unbridgable. Starting off well, not making stupid penalties and maybe stopping someone on third down would have been helpful.

Probably not the right call, but it's basically academic since the Cowboys failed to score again.

And let me say this again: If the Cowboys didn't want to get scored on, they shouldn't have called a timeout inside of two minutes. You do that to a team, you deserve to get rung up for another score.

they werent running up the score. it was 4th down. what else were they gonna do?? kneeing would be a turnover and you just dont do that. field goal would have been a bigger slap in the face. by running it, they challenged the dallas D to stop them and they didnt respond. the patriots did the same thing in buffalo and cleveland, only the bills and browns were able to make a stop

oh trust me, if the pats wanted to run up the score, it woulda been brady to moss

Dallas certainly could've played better, the penalties hurt and so did the gap in time of possession. But I think we can safely say that New England's A game beats our A game. Both teams could've played better, the Pats gave up a defensive touchdown and we had some success moving the ball. I agree with OV, playing them gives us a measuring stick to gauge how far we have to go. Clearly our secondary is the weak link. I don't know when the trade deadline is or how much of a difference Anthony Henry would've made, but we'll need much improvement from the secondary if we see them in February.

First and foremost props to the Pats. God that team is fucking good. They kicked our asses all over the field today. Secondly...FUCK WADE PHILLIPS ON THAT DECISION IN THE 4TH! I am sorry but in a game where you are down by 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter against an offense that was getting anything it wanted, that field goal was the stupidest coaching decision of the year. That was something Dave Campo did. The Pats were celebrating on the inside when they saw that. It was still a 2 possession game and the Pats had the ball with no momentum taken from them. A touchdown would have at least made it a game still. You grow a fucking pair and go for the end zone. Worst case, they have to drive a longer field. Even if we wouldnt of stopped them, at least taking a chance could have kept them in the game a little longer. That fg ended the game right then and there. Pats are a disgusting team. The only team who has a realistic chance at them is the Colts. No one else stands a chance in hell.

i'm not fretting. i was happy they played well for a good amount of the game. after the patties went up 14-0 i thought it might be a really long day. i'd much rather have a 48-27 like this than one where they scored late to make it closer. they are a decent cover safety away from being a great defense.

If Wade phillips went for it on 4th and 5 and turned the ball over on downs, ya'll would be saying this is what lost you the game.

Your coach said that if he had a play he knew they would score for sure, he would've called it on 3rd and 5.
If he didn't went for it, it's because 3pts are always better than 0pts. And most coaches like to challenge their defense rather than their offense(especially when they have a qb who threw 5INT few days earlier).
Your coach called a reasonnable play.

Where Henry would have made a difference is on all of those third downs. Instead of Nate Jones being the nickel back, it would have been Reeves. Newman, Henry and Reeves are certainly better in coverage than Newman, Reeves, and Jones. Oh well, injuries are a part of the game.

I really think the only improvement I could see for Dallas is cutting down on penalties and having Anthony Henry to fortify the secondary. I'd give New England a B+ and Dallas a B-. The Cowboys played hard and did a lot of things right.

Yep. The Patriots went 11/17 on 3rd downs. Like stated earlier, you're not going to stop anybody if they are that successful on 3rd downs. We need to work on that immediately. Many of those passes was on Nate Jones. Reeves was not the problem yesterday true. It was Jones. Brady picked on him like a child and it was to easy. That's why Welker had such a big first half becuase Jones couldn't cover him. It was a mismatch.

The season is not over yet and I do believe that Dallas can play with them. It was 31-24 WELL into the 4th quarter. Dallas has work to do and they know what they need to do. Remember Cowboy fans, we lost 31-7 in October 1992 to Philadelphia. We was outclassed in that game as well and the media had the same things to say about Dallas like they are saying now about Dallas. Dallas worked on what it needed to work on that season and took care of Philly the next two games beating them in the rematch at Texas Stadium and in the playoffs.

The Pats are simply the class of the NFL right now, but it doesn't mean they're unbeatable. An injury, an off-game, anything could cause them to slip. I think the Boys are probably close to Indy as well, so barring a perfect game from either team, we have a good shot at beating anyone in the league this year.

And Romo is just going to get better.

One thing I have always wanted/expected when watching the Cowboys all these years, is DEFENSE. I hate it when the D plays so shitty like they did yesterday. I would rather the offense suck ass than the defense. I would rather lose a game due to horrible offense rather than horrible defense. Peyton Manning would have easily ripped the cowboys secondary a new asshole as well. Cowboys have a shitload of work to do and they have serious concerns on the defensive side of the ball.

stretch
10-15-2007, 11:28 AM
My only real concern for the defense is the soft playcalls on third down. Why the hell were they not blitzing on third downs? They were giving Brady all day, and we all know what he is capable of doing with time. And they were doing a good job of getting to him too, when they were blitzing. Allowing all those third down conversions was what won the game for the Patriots. If he had stopped them on just a few of them, I guarantee Dallas would have won the game.

Yeah, you have a better chance to win in a low-scoring defensive struggle than getting into a shootout when you can't stop anybody. The NFC is so bad that we still have to be considered the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. But I don't know how much we can make up the deficit that was exposed yesterday. NW didn't exactly play a flawless game themselves, and they will be well-prepared when it comes to the Super Bowl. Maroney didn't even play, and Watson didn't come back. Dallas ultimately has themselves to blame for Romo's INT deep on their side of the field, calling a timeout and not being able to get a stop on 4th and 1, but I can understand Belichick's decision-making in this instance. You absolutely need that insurance touchdown when there was a threat that the Cowboys were going to go down and score three consecutive times in the final minute.

Unless I am off, it isnt just the Pats that will be owning our d (if it stays this way) but the Colts as well. Peyton will have his way and pick apart our secondary piece by piece. Even if we get the luxary of avoiding the Pats, the Colts offense would have easily presented similar matchup problems for our secondary.

ummm you forgot balls too. If our coach had any testicles he would have known better than to kick that fg down by 14 in the 4th against an offense who was getting anything they wanted. I was at the game yesterday and I already told people after that fg to start heading for the exits. I knew the game was over. That did nothing to the Cowboys momentum. If we miss the td chance oh well we cant stop them anyways plus they would of had to go 95 yards instead of 75 (which wouldnt have been any kind of a difference in us stopping them).

Let me ask you something mono, if the Pats were down 14 in the 4th with their d playing shitty and it was 4th and goal at the 5, what do you think they would have done? I know in my eyes they would have gone for it as would have the Colts in that situation. Being a risk taker is necessary in crucial times of a game.

I have no doubt that Wade Phillips said what Peter King said he did, and that kind of thinking is shared around the league, but I can't believe he would've said that for public consumption. I bet it was a misunderstanding over what was attributed and offered on the record. As for TO, whatever, I didn't say that as calling out Randy Moss. I don't get some of these coaching decisions. You're not going to beat NW playing it safe and conservatively. You don't score there, you've got them backed up inside their 10. Maybe they still go on down the field, ice the game with a score and eat up the clock, but you least make it harder for them. I see virtually no downside to going for it and not converting in that situation.

Another decision I didn't get was Holmgren going for it on 4th down inside the 20 with under two minutes and down by 11. They probably wouldn't have won anyway since they needed two scores sandwiched by onside kick, but it's just stupid.

With the Colts it is. Dungy/Manning show Belichick respect and he'll do the same.

When you follow the Patriots for an entire season and not just the 30 second snippets you get on SportsCenter, maybe you'll know what the fuck you're talking about here.

He's been running up the score on every team he's played this year. He waved off his assistant from taking a head coaching job because of his own issues with the Jets organization. Mangini is no saint himself because of his trying to poach some of the Pats talent on his way out the door, but who the hell is Belicheck to tell a guy he can't take a head coaching job?

I don't watch SportsCenter.

I would easily assume Peyton Manning and company feel the same exact way. Some even had the Colts going 9-7 and missing the playoffs (Skip Bayless) while others no longer saw them as a serious elite contender.

Maybe but the Colts haven't been accused of cheating. I think that NE is out to prove that they can win without shenanigans.

I doubt it too...not because its the Colts but I think the whole Patriots organization is so pissed at the whole world that they are going to try and wax everyone they face. IMO, they look like a team that has adopted the "us against the world" mentality and perfected it. I don't think Belichick, Brady and Co. will be happy until they pecker-slap everyone in the league on the way to a 4th Lombardi. Mind you, I don't know this for sure, this is just an opinion. No one on this board actually knows what is going on behind the scenes, we can just speculate.

Nobody in sports closes ranks the way that the Patriots do. You get the sense, sometimes, that they're a team full of guys that everyone else in the NFL just hates. You also get the sense that they want it that way.

The Patriots are incredibly comfortable in their own skin and they are an extremely tight-knit group that's been through so many battles under so many different circumstances that nothing ever seems to faze them at this point. They lose players and just plug someone new in; they lose assistant coaches and just plug someone new in. That core stays intact and it refuses to worry about what anyone else thinks, while focusing exclusively on winning games. In that sense, I think these guys are clearly on a level with the great Super Bowl dynasties like the Steelers of the 70's, the 49'ers of the 80's, and the Cowboys of the 90's. Those other clubs (and the Steelers and 49'ers of those eras never dealt with free agency and salary caps) were probably all more talented, but I don't think any of them was as resilient and tough-minded as this group of Patriots. That's not to say that those teams were mentally soft, only that this group of Patriots might be among the toughest-minded teams ever.

It's scary that they're this good right now with no appreciable running game and without Richard Seymour, who is probably the best defensive lineman in the game when healthy.

I do recall Belichick refusing to talk to Peyton Manning after he lost in the AFC championship game last year. Manning went out of his way to find him and talk to him afterwards, and Bill didn't even look at the guy. He just nodded his head while walking away angrily. According to SI, Belichick broke the ice at the Pro Bowl and bought Manning a beer. Probably spiked it with some rufanol and stole his kidneys. Or maybe it was truth serum so he could find out what all of the Colts checks and audibles are.

sorry he can't service the entire opposing team with blowjobs after the game, but he's got to get to the locker room since the Colts just won the AFC championship and had a big trophy ceremony to get started. Lingering about on the field after a defeat is more classless than hugging the winning HC and getting the fuck out of there.

Or shoving the cameraman after beating the Jets. Or the way he handled the post-game interview with Solomon Wilcotts. No player or coach wants to do that crap after losing in the playoffs, but it's part of the job, you deal with the media and you handle yourself like a professional. Colts-Patriots is Colts-Patriots. There is no rivalry like it. I'm not saying it's the most fierce of rivalries (basically it was years of the Patriots shitting all over the Colts, and now the pendulum has swung the other way so that the Colts shit all over the Patriots - and now both sides pretty much respect each other while having some hatred) but there's no comparing what may go down as the two greatest quarterbacks in NFL history dueling each other for years.

Both franchises hated the other with a passion. The Wings had the better record but would choke in the playoffs until 1997. Then they repeated in 98 after going through a grueling 7 game series with the Avs.

Now, the rivalry is gone, much like the Pats/Colts will be in a few years due to FA and retirements.
