Me too, and I'm pretty glad the Spurs finally found a taker for Beno. Good luck Darius Washington, whoever you are.

The funniest part is that even McHale is smart enough to not want Beno. He just wanted the cash. Beno was waived immediately. :lmao

Question....What does McHale buy with the 2-3 mil he just recieved from the Spurs FO? Spurs are too good to do their own dirty work. We PAYOFF some lesser team to do it for us.

I'm pretty sure it's already been said in the previous 9+ pages, but this is a clear indication to me that the Spurs are impressed and confident in Darius Washington.
Spurs could've traded Beno away for scraps at any time in the past two years, but it took them having real confidence that there wouldn't be a void left with his departure (as well as the monetary incentive) to make the deal.
Am I right to assume Washington will get some serious burn over the next couple weeks?
If so, I'm excited to see what he can bring....
I see the reasoning for this trade as twofold. I think your analysis that this trade shows an encouraging level of interest in Darius Washington is partially accurate. Washington was very hot in preseason and showed a lot of good things. But don't forget that the preseason was also marked by the Manu/Barry point platoon for a while. And Pop has been quoted in saying he was impressed with Manu's play and versatility. I think the Spurs realize that Beno is a nullity and feel that they are better served with their other options. Between Vaughn's reliable (albeit, unspectacular) play, Darius Washington's promise and the Manu/Barry platoon they probably feel that one will come through when needed.

Beno has two rings, so it's been a good experience for him in a lot of ways. He's had some injury misfortune but he just never was tough enough or strong enough with the ball to really stay in the rotation, particularly after his 2005 Detroit Finals debacle. His defense was soft and supple but he did have some excellent passing sense to him. He was probably one of the best the Spurs had at getting the ball up the court from point A to point B without putting the ball on the floor.
BTW...One look at the Spurs Training Camp video on NBAtv and you get a sense of how fond Pop is of Darius.

It seems like FO is in tune with the general opinion of the people here at Spurstalk, first it was Darius, now it's Beno.
Any other requests?

Agreed. It seemed like everytime they showed scenes of Pop during practice he was always mentioning Darius. From the comments he made to him personally, to asking Michael Finley to watch out for him, to urging him to make Parker work for it, Pop seemed very aware of Darius' performance everytime he was on camera.
On a related note, I'm kinda pissed that the Spurs' Training Camp episode is only 30 minutes while the Nuggets and Hornets each got an hour. Weak.

After all those comments Udrih has made to the press, good riddance, and good luck ever playing in the greatest league in the world again.
I wonder if this news should give me reason to be excited about Washington. I can't wait to see him against Portland tonight, since I haven't been able to catch any preseason games in LA. :(

I read somewhere that Washington was being pimped as the equal to Telfair, back when he wasnt a bust, when he was in highschool - is that true?
Has he got his head on straight? Is he spurs material, or a 'baller'? (The article said the reason telfair made it to the pros easier, was Washington was too arrogant and only would pass to teammates if they played defence - surely thats a good thing :))
He certainly had every opportunity to go the way of Telfair (or Beno). I seem to recall that he was one of those guys everyone was watching, and that he left for the draft too early amid assurances from those around him that he was a sure first round pick. That he's stuck around and worked hard is very encouraging.

But if Steve Nash keeps making funny faces for the camera THEN we'll see just how long a thread can get.

I don't really hate Beno but I've gotten tired of seeing him on the bench, so much wasted potential there. His comments about the Spurs and his playing time weren't helping either.
But anyway, bye Beno.

Man, I did not see that comming. Thanks Wolves. I really hope Washington will make most of this chance. I really like the fact that they still have Vaughn as some kind of insurance.
Lets get the season started....
Beno wasn't a scapegoat...he earned his scorn.
Half the people celebrating his departure were Beno fans his first season here...
Dude didn't play hard.
He didn't stay in shape.
He was injury prone.
And then he turned cancerous on top of it all....
Not only his first season. I had hope for him until this summer :depressed
How sad is too see wasted talent
So what happens to Beno now? D-League or Europe?
Europe. I don't think that any GM (in the USA) will sign player with his reputation. A lot can be tolerated, laziness can't be
He might even pull Latrell

The Spurs don't need any insurance against losing Beno. The guy played exactly 0 meaningful minutes last season, and if Washington completely bombs to the point of only being useful for 3 to 5 minutes a regular season game in either garbage time or to finish quarters and give TP extra rest then he'll be pretty much equal to Beno of the last 2 seasons.

Man dont even compare DW to Beno, that guy has a heart.
Anyway, once Vaughan comes back from injury i think he will assume his back up position, but i think Wash, if he picks up the system well and continues to do what hes been doing i think he will eventually get the backup spot. I cant see him taking it in the 2 weeks before Vaughan gets back, i think well see a bit of Manu/Brent at the point along with Wash.

Obviously: Udrih Deserves a Shot
Beno Udrih never quite got with the system. That much is true. On top of it, he never quite connected with Gregg Popovich. On more than one occasion Beno told us that he didn't understand his situation at all. If he had a good game he got benched. If he played like crap he'd get more minutes. Then he wouldn't play at all for a while. Popovich is quirky, and not everyone makes it as a Spur. That was the case with Beno. When Darius Washington stepped in after Beno injured his hand it was the beginning of the end for Beno in San Antonio...
What about Sacramento? Wouldn't that be interesting? The Kings need a point guard and Beno needs a second chance with a team that will give him plenty of playing time. Chauncey Billups recently told me that the reason he found a home in Detroit was because he got guaranteed minutes no matter how many mistakes he made. He didn't have to look over his shoulder to see if the coach was preparing his substitute. Perhaps Beno would benefit from exactly the same kind of situation.
I'm not suggesting that Beno has a little Chauncey inside him ready to bust out, but it's also not completely out of the questions. The Kings might have just the right situation for a player looking to prove he can make it in the NBA.
Beno might be just the player who could benefit from that situation...

Udrih has to realize he's squandering the chance of a lifetime. Perhaps getting cut and realizing there's no market for him will finally make him grow up. There's no denying that he has NBA talent; even starting-level talent. My best guess is that he won't give a shit, he'll make lots of excuses, and head back to Europe and badmouth the NBA to anyone who's willing to listen.

You can't help but laugh at the way the Spurs sent him out. He was traded to Minnesota for a "protected" SECOND round draft pick. It's not often you hear that phrase. What does it mean to "protect" a second round pick?
Well, as long as it's in the 50's you can have it, but we're not giving up that 39th pick in the draft. It should read "As long as it's in the very high 50s you can have it, but we're not giving up that 56th pick in the draft.
Maybe Beno can make it somewhere in the NBA, but who was the last NBA point guard you could honestly call lazy and successful at the same time?
