Oh lots of teams do it. The Redskins have been doing it this year as well. But don't you get a hefty fine or some other punishment if you're caught? And if your "crowd noise" CD freakin skips? WTF is Polian too cheap to get an Ipod for that?

He's probably too busy spending all the Colts money trying to get NFL rules made to prevent the Patriots being allowed to tackle, run a 3-4, throw the ball, etc.

i never said it was, but piping in crowd noise definitely gives your team an advantage. If the other team can't hear audibles or if the QB can't even hear the plays being called into his helmet, and it's because of artificial noise, that definitely is an unfair advantage.

anyways, the videotaping of signals that the Colts do is just as bad as the videotaping of signals that the Patriots got caught doing. The Colts just haven't been busted for it. Yet.

yes it is. also, too much crowd noise can actually net the home team a penalty. of course this never gets called but it is in the rule book.

That rule was done away with some years ago.

They used to have a noise meter (whatever the hell it's called), but after many of the owners complained, they did away with the rule.

LEAGUE LOOKING INTO CROWD NOISE PHENOMENON AT RCA DOME

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells us that the league is looking into the strange audio phenomenon that occurred near the start of the fourth quarter on Sunday between the Patriots at the Colts.

As explained by some Internet hack on SportingNews.com, the crowd noise made a strange vibrating sound (and then got considerably quieter) in the middle of a New England offensive play.

3. Pats have every right to be upset

Though the Patriots got out of Indy with a 24-20 win, the NFL's lone remaining unbeaten team has every right to be livid about the quality (or lack thereof) of the officiating. The worst calls Sunday involved cases of pass interference.

It started when Colts tight end Dallas Clark mauled Patriots safety Rodney Harrison in the end zone on a ball Harrison might have been able to intercept. No call.

It continued when Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel was flagged for interfering with Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez on a ball that was simply not catchable.

It happened again when New England cornerback Ellis Hobbs was flagged for interference after Indy wideout Reggie Wayne literally tackled him.

The worst call was made in the fourth quarter, with the Patriots driving and trailing by 10. From the Indianapolis 3, Brady threw to Randy Moss in the end zone. When the dust settled, Moss was flagged for offensive pass interference, even though he did nothing that would classify as offensive pass interference. While New England overcame the 10-yard penalty to score, the victory was a lot more difficult than it should have been because of the questionable decisions of the officials.

So what gives? Was it sheer incompetence? Or have the Patriots become the equivalent of the old Raiders in the eyes of the NFL and those who officiate their games?

4. Milli Vanilli moment in Indy?

In the past, teams that have visited the RCA Dome have questioned whether the Colts pipe in artificial crowd noise in an effort to disrupt the road team's offense. Though the Colts have denied any such chicanery (thanks, Tiki), the suspicions remain.

And the suspicions will only grow stronger after Sunday's game against New England. During the first play of the fourth quarter, the noise from the crowd contained a strange effect. It almost sounded like my kid was working the "Whammy Bar" while playing Guitar Hero.

We don't know whether that noise could be heard in the stadium, but it was obvious on CBS' broadcast. And it invites speculation as to whether the Colts are indeed piping in phony music -- and whether there was a malfunction of some sort on Sunday that offered proof of it.

I don't think you should pipe in extra noise but if your fans are loud by themselves, don't penalize them for that.

Patriots complain about crowd noise
By Jason Cole

Monday, Nov 5, 2007 12:13 pm EST
The NFL is looking into allegations that the Indianapolis Colts piped in noise during the game Sunday between the Colts and the Patriots. The charge comes after Patriots President Jonathan Kraft became the latest NFL team executive to accuse the Colts of the distracting tactic that is against the rules.

"We're aware of it and we're looking into it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "It may just be the TV feed from CBS, but we're checking it out."

Observers at the game said there seemed to be a "skip" in the sound during the game Sunday, which the Patriots won 24-20. That might confirm the long-held suspicion among many people in the NFL that the Colts play loud crowd noise to help distract opponents when the other team is on offense.

"We're aware of the accusations, but there has never been anything to substantiate it," Aiello said.

Kraft approached NFL Vice President of Security Milt Ahlerich after Kraft and his parents, Patriots owners Bob and Myra Kraft, left the Patriots locker room after the game.

Kraft was angry as he told Ahlerich the league needed to look into the allegation. Ahlerich is the same person who confiscated a videotape made by the Patriots during a game against the New York Jets in Week 2 that led to the Spygate controversy.

In addition, New England quarterback Tom Brady also commented on how loud it was in the RCA Dome.

"I don't know how you measure levels of being deaf, but we couldn't hear anything out there," Brady said.

This is the latest in a string of incidents between the teams that have fueled the growing Colts-Pats rivalry. In the past, Colts General Manager Bill Polian has vehemently argued that the Patriots have bent the rules in terms of use of replay challenges and the pass interference rule.

Whether or not they used crowd noise, I was impressed with the Colts. I didn't think they could touch the Patriots. Granted, they repeatedly got huge calls and still lost at home, but they were still in the same league as the Patriots. Marvin Harrison wasn't there as well. Colts have cemented a nice spot at #2.

I would agree to a point. The Colts defense looked crazy fast. Their overall speed on defense has to be as strong as any teams in the league. And, I have no doubt that was the best defense the Pats saw all year. But, I wouldn't go too far praising Indy for being in the game for several reasons.

1. It was at Indianapolis, and with that crowd as crazy as it were, the Colts still had a decided advantage even without Marvin Harrison. The crowd was dead silent when the Colts offense was line-up before a snap. And, they were deafening when the Pats lined up.

2. The Pats really killed themselves with penalties. Now some are directly attributable to the Colts play and the crowd. But, they had some major penalties you don't expect from them.

3. Two of the bigger penalties called were totally bullshit. The offensive pass interference on Moss and the pass interference call on Hobbs near the end zone. Both were bad calls.

4. The only TD pass Manning threw for on the delayed screen to Addai before the end of the first half was more of a fluke than the Colts offense just outplaying, outsmarting, or outmuscling the Pats defense. Take nothing away from Addai for breaking tackles, but I really don't think the Colts should have ever scored on that play.

5. And, lastly, the last two drives by Brady and the Pats offense pretty much showed that the Pats could do whatever they want on offense when they are focused and ready to play. It was like no defensive resistance in those last two drives. The Colts defense couldn't do anything. So, when the game was on the line and the Pats offense knows it has to make plays, it made two touchdown drives look easy ... and I mean EASY.

And yet the Colts had a fg blocked, had an easy td dropped, and were playing without their starting left tackle. im also pretty sure that Wayne dropped a big catch that would have changed the game as well. Colts could have EASILY won that game.

I think the game changed after Wayne dropped that ball. It was an EASY catch. And for every excuse that Pats fans makes, the Colts have ones as well. You named a few. Also, not having Harrison was mentioned. Don't forget that Bob Sanders got hurt at the end of the game, which made a HUGE difference in Moss getting so open for that 55 yard bomb there at the end. And there was a terrible call on the Colts as well, on Bethea for an interference call on Moss (Moss caught the ball anyways, but the fact is, the refs called it regardless). It was equally ticky-tacky as the Hobbs call. The Samuel call was so fucking obvious, I don't know how the fuck Pats fans could question that. He straight up grabbed the guy's jersey. It might have been a little overthrown, but it was so fucking blatant that you absolutely have to call that. Obviously he was trying to do whatever he could to keep Gonzales from getting to the ball. If he knew that it was overthrown, he would not have felt it was neccesary to grab his jersey, would he have?

Seriously, fuck the Pats. They whine too fucking much. I like Brady, but this year, I have lost a lot of respect for him. He has turned into the whiniest QB in the league. All I ever see him do is whine at the refs over nothing. Fucking bitch.

I'm not saying the Colts could not have won.

But, I do think New England pretty much showed they were clearly the better team with those last two drives. Manning didn't do much against that New England defense. Take away that Addai screen pass to end the first half, and Manning throws 15 for 26 for 152 yards. Manning had maybe five impressive throws the entire game.

I'm not saying the Pats are miles ahead of Indy or that Indy cannnot beat the Pats. But, I think Pats are clearly the better team. Not by a lot, but clearly better.

When the season started I really thought Charlie Johnson should have been the starter at left tackle, but Tony Ugoh has been pretty slick all year and not having him the past two weeks has exposed some flaws that will hopefully go away when he comes back.

We started the game without Marvin, Tony and Freddy, and ended the game without Gonzo (who was starting for Marvin). I'm hopeful about the playoff grudge match, especially if we're healthy all around. I don't think the Pats can beat the Colts a second time, especially because Addai tore them up all day and their game plan for the rematch will almost certainly be to take him out of the equation. Which opens up practically everyone else. This loss hurts but it's only a regular season loss, and there are some bright rays of hope to take from it.

I'm still bummed. During football season, Sunday is the only day of the week that matters (occasionally Monday or Thursday matter), and every other day of the week is spent finding something to do to pass the time till Sunday.

I would be more bummed if the Colts had been completely dominated by the Patriots, but we held the Patriots to their lowest point total of the year and they only won by 4 as opposed to 20 or more. Good game by the Colts.

Not blaming the Colts for being at home. That's the way it goes. But, it's clear that there was a decided advantage in terms of noise depending who had the ball. What's there to dispute about that?

Moss did not interfere when he got called for offensive pass interference. It was bullshit, period. Hobbs did not interfere the time he got called for defensive pass interference, period. Samuel absolutely interfered with Gonzalez on his pass interference.

Let me clarify what I said about the Addai play. Of course the Colts are capable of big plays. But, a running back screen play for a 73 yard touchdown? Not exactly what you expect from a Colts "big play." It wasn't a fluke in that it was a miracle play or anything like that. But the Colts weren't trying for a big play. They were running the clock out unless they got better field position on one of their running plays or screens. New England's secondary were playing soft to not allow a big play. It was a fluke in that the play was not drawn up to score a touchdown. It was more about running the clock out with a safe play. Addai still had to run it and still had to break tackles. But, if I told you Peyton Manning threw a 73 yard touchdown pass, would you guess it was a 5 yard dink screen pass that went for 73 yards? Of course not. To me, it was more lucky than anything.

Indy's defense played great for most of the game. I wouldn't say they ever controlled the game. There was never an instance during that game where anyone would have said, oh Indy has this game wrapped up. And, the last two New England drives pretty much says that the Patriots offense could do anything they like. Down 10 with 7 minutes to go, and they score one touchdown in less than a minute, and another less than 4 minutes later? That's an offense that can do anything they want.

I'm not a Patriots fan. In fact, I don't like them. But, I watched the game. And, I gave my opinion. To me, the Patriots are clearly the better team. Indy is very good. Very, very good. But, the Patriots are better.

It's not the first time Indianapolis has been accused of such tactics. The Pittsburgh Steelers complained about the same thing after a 26-7 loss at the dome in November 2005. Since then, other teams have informally contended there is artificial noise pumped into the dome.
