View Full Version : If Obama wasn't black....

Would he be a senator...much less a presidential candidate?

Watching him on Meet the Press yesterday, I'd have to say, "No".

(of course GW or Hillary wouldn't be where they are if they weren't WHO they are, but I would like to talk about Obama)

If anybody else caught it, what were your impressions?

I think Colin Powell would be elected in a landside if he ran.

Hmmm. He ran against another Black man in Illinois for Senator, so it couldn't have been his race that got him elected. Jesse Jackson is Black and ran for president, but didn't do as well as Obama. Carole Mosley Braun ran in 2004 and didn't poll anywhere close to what Obama is polling at now.

What I wonder is would you be calling his credentials into question if he wasn't Black? Certainly he is no worse than any of the other candidates.

I didn't question his credentials; I wonder what is so awesome about him. I expected something more charismatic and masterful for him to have come so far, so fast. Clinton always awed me with his obvious intellect, political instinct and smoothness. Kennedy was a Kennedy, Bush was a Bush - there are other young politicians out there - why him?

I think because he's black, and I think Joe Biden (javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/politics/2007/01/31/snow.biden.blunder.affl','2007/02/14');) agrees with me.

Your link doesn't work, but I am assuming that you are referring to Biden's statement that Obama is the first Black candidate that is (if my memory serves correctly) "mainstream, clean, and articulate."

I don't know what Biden was trying to say, but again, clearly it's not all about his race. There have been plenty of Black candidates that have not done as well as Obama. And I assume that is exactly what Biden meant by his comment. Namely, that Obama is the first Black candidate that people will take seriously.

Plus, your first post indicates that you are judging him solely by his appearance on Meet the Press. I have watched every candidate that has been on Meet the Press lately and none have wowed me with their appearances, including Obama. Again though, that's been true for all of them. It's hard to come off well with Russert trying to play "Gotcha" with every question.

It's hard to come off well with Russert trying to play "Gotcha" with every question. You mean like when he brought up the quote from the DNC convention in '04 when Obama said, "there isn't much difference between me and Bush on Iraq"?

and Obama answered by saying, "Well, you know, we had two candidates who voted for entering the war, so what could I do?"

You mean moments like that?

That ain't a gotcha - because Russert dropped it!

a "Gotcha" WOULD have been:

"So, you'll say whatever needs to be said as long as it is politically expedient." OR "You'll put your party ahead of your own political veiws".

But Russert didn't say either of those things. He said, "OK".

OR When talking about Social Security, and Obama was talking about making the tough choices, which boiled down to making a minority of the population pay for the over burdened demands of the majority's entitlement program. I don't understand what is so bold about that? Take from the rich - give to the poor AND middle class certainly won't cost him that many votes!

Obama is a socialist. Pure and simple. Just like Hillary.
Edwards is a lawyer, running on the fumes of socialism.
He could care less what happens to the coutry. So long
as he gets elected. Edwards will take care of Edwards
and Hillary will do her socialist thing and take care of
the elitist Socialist.

Have you ever read "Year of the Rat?" Thanks to Bill and Hillary, the largest transfer of military technology to China took place in the eight years he was in office. Look at the scandals involving Bill and Hillary...a bunch of Chinese people.

I'm already outraged at a Democrat President that has sold this country to China. I'm trying to do my part to prevent the team from being in a position to do so again.

Yeah, that explains China's exponential military buildup and technological military advances -- beginning in the late '90's early 00's.

A Democrat DID.

Who passed MFN? - That's what opened the floodgates.

And with all of the (ongoing) Clinton ties to China, or Chinese decendants, I would say it'll continue unabated under a new Clinton presidency.

I know I’ll get attacked for this, but I think senator Obama would do better in the democrat primaries if he was white. We can see time and again that the democrats are the race-phobic types. They are all kissy kissy with other cultures and races, but are phony about their liking of them.

I notice mention of Colon Powell. People like the man because he is a man of integrity. Black, white… It doesn’t matter. What I see killing all the black candidates is not that they aren’t what many of us call articulate, but rather, he doesn’t talk like he is from the ghetto. That is it. No Ebonics here…

I really like senator Obama as a person. I just don’t like his politics. I could never vote for him, but I would like to know him.

Does that make any sense?

You are absolutely right about Democrats and their lack of sincerity involving racial issues. But I would like to know which Black politicians talks in "ebonics" and "ghetto."

So you went from "The only reason he is even a candidate is because he's Black," to "He would be better off if he was white."? Those are two seemingly inconsistent statements. Also, I would submit to you that Obama is more articulate than most of the other candidates in the field. In other words it's not just that "he doesn't talk like he is from the ghetto," but rather that he is a better orator than most of the candidates I've seen.

and Obama answered by saying, "Well, you know, we had two candidates who voted for entering the war, so what could I do?"

What he actually said regarding the two candidates running for president was that he didn't have access to the same Senate intelligence reports they did, but Russert didn't include the whole quote --

Russert misleadingly cropped Obama comment to claim he wasn't "firmly wedded against the war"

"In July of 2004, Barack Obama: 'I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports. ... What would I have done? I don't know,' in terms of how you would have voted on the war."

Russert did not quote the very next sentence of Obama's statement, which was, "What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made" for authorizing the war.

The New York Times original article:

In a recent interview, he declined to criticize Senators Kerry and Edwards for voting to authorize the war, although he said he would not have done the same based on the information he had at the time.

''But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,'' Mr. Obama said. ''What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.''
