View Full Version : A Message To SpursTalk

I had a couple of things I wanted to say to you guys.

I don't have any Spurs fans around me, this board is my connection to my team. (Like lots of us I'm sure.)
The past 24 hours were hard for Spurs fans, for Duncan fans, while waiting to hear that Duncan was okay.
It was really nice to not feel alone. To worry with you, to breathe a sigh of relief with you.

Thanks. It feels like family here.

The other thing...I lurk at Spurs Report now and then and I wandered over there this morning to see how they were handling it. What I found was a stickied thread at the top of the board warning that anyone that posted a "practical joke" thread on Duncan's injury would be banned.

What a difference there is between these two sites. Kori didn't seem to find it necessary to warn this community about doing such a thing. No matter how much we get into it with fans of other teams, and our beloved trolls, no one here would even think of scaring this board like that. Our worst trolls, the ones here to only stir things up, didn't start such a thread.

There's a reason so many are here every day, lots of them not even Spurs fans. Kori and timvp have made us a home, created a family. We can fight like siblings but there's support when things seem bleak and there's laughter when all is well.

Thanks SpursTalk. I don't know where I'd be without you. :toast

True.

But I wasn't trying to knock them as much as I'm trying to point out how different the sites are. I know there are lots of people who post on both. But for me, only ST works. There's a different mindset here. It's a community. It seems like more than just a "message board."

Overreact much? Don't get me wrong, I wish Timmy the best, for his sake, and our Spurs, but this whole thing shouldn't really keep you up at night. Otherwise you need counseling.

Good news though, you're clearly not alone. A lot of people jumped off the cliff when Timmy went down... crazy stuff

Didn't keep me up at all.
But I hung around here today when I could waiting for news. And there were lots of people doing the same.

I was worried, I think we all were. It looked bad. As fans we were concerned about our season, our chance for a repeat. Duncan's health.

It was nice to be around people who were worried too. That's all.

I don't do the cliff thing. Never have.

I love the attitude of some people along the lines of, if you have an emotional investment in your team or a player, you need help. I love the Spurs and Tim Duncan and i as well was VERY upset about this and worried about his health and NO i don't feel there is anything wrong with that.

I guess we have different priorities. I usually don't let a game get me down that much. I mean, I felt bad for Duncan, I really did. I hoped it was nothing serious, and was happy to hear it wasn't... but anything more than that is a bit much in my book.

Of course, there are different approaches to everything.

It's not brand loyalty, it's where you're comfortable.
Lots of people post on both.
Some on one or the other.
I like it here, but I have no issue with them.

I just find the sites to have completely different atmospheres.
Freedom is part of it, but it's more than that. It just feels different here. I can't seem to say it any other way...it feels like family here. It's not just a bunch of strangers that like a sports team.

Love the Spurs, love Spurstalk.

Being from Chicago, it's rough, and rare to even see them on TV.

To answer the earlier debate, it could actually be argued that emotional investment in sports is a healthy thing. It provides catharsis, as we tend to feel what the players are feeling, camaraderie, and allows us to focus on something which could alleviate stress or doubt about our lives in general.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being seriously concerned for Duncan. However, if you're a Spurs fan who slits his wrists a bit every time ".4" or "2006 West-Semi's" are mentioned, there might be a problem there. They did hurt. So bad. But they didn't fundamentally change my life.

No slit wrists here and no life changing epiphanys but I will tell you what, I have bled black and silver for a long long time, I think I was jr high back in 75 or so that I first heard of a team that San Antonio had (wasn't living in Texas then) called the Spurs and I have followed them since them.

I'm not likely to hurt myself or someone else when they are losing, but even during the regular season when they're doing badly I from time to time need to change the channel because my blood pressure goes through the roof and I have occasional chest pains. I now keep a blood pressure monitor handy. I've already had one heart attack and I fear another one like death itself (pun intended) I have to maintain a reasonable approach to being a fan and monitoring my health. I eat healthy and I exercise, I let my son run our business to relieve stress as much as possible, but sports in particular the Spurs, Cowboys and Longhorns are the teams and some of the things that I'm passionate about.

Thank you. Well said.

Duncan, and the Spurs, are a stress reliever for me. For a couple of hours every game I can disappear into a world I love.

Do I like it when they lose? No. But it's not life altering.
Was I upset when Duncan went down? Yes, but again, it's not life altering.

I feel very comfortable here, too. I've been on other boards and this one is so superior it isn't even a contest. But like any family - though at times I think we can be very dysfunctional - there will always be a difference in opinions. And that's a good thing. But like the songs says "different strokes for different folks".
