Did Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans coaches have an under-the-table agreement at the end of last Sunday's game?

Tennessee quarterback Kerry Collins said on WFAN Radio on Thursday that the Titans kneeled at the end of the game Sunday because they knew the Colts wouldn't call a timeout.

With Tennessee leading 16-10 and needing a victory to make the playoffs, the Titans had originally called a running play, Collins said. But the team changed to a kneeldown when he was told over his headset that the Colts wouldn't call a timeout, which would have possibly forced the Titans to punt with less than 20 seconds left in the game, Collins said.

"Apparently there was some communication between Jeff (Fisher) and Tony (Dungy)," Collins said on WFAN.

Fisher said he knew Dungy wouldn't use the timeout because he's so familiar with the Colts coach's thinking, the Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel reported Thursday.

"Let me just say, I knew he wasn't going to use it. Tony and I were on the competition committee for a long time," Fisher said, the newspaper reported.

The Titans coach also said the Colts would have gotten the ball back with 25 seconds left but down nine because Tennessee would have kicked another field goal, the newspaper reported.

"It didn't make any sense. They gave it their best shot," Fisher said, the News-Sentinel reported.

Dungy congratulated the Titans.

"I have to congratulate the Titans and I think it is a feather in the cap of our division to get three teams in the playoffs,” Dungy said, Colts.com reported. “They (the Titans) certainly deserve it.”

If true, the Cleveland Browns could possibly file a grievance alleging collusion, which is against NFL rules. The Browns would have made the playoffs if the Titans had lost.

Collins also said he thought starting quarterback Vince Young was day-to-day, but "he'll do whatever he needs to do to get ready to play."

What's asinine about this, is if there WAS an agreement, it came about late in the game (Collins had a run play before it was scratched).

The Colts didn't lay down, they just didn't want to prolong the game. They tried to win with their backups to prevent injury (something all the frontliners with nothing to play for did and almost always do). There are a lot of games each season that were close but the losing team didn't use all their timeouts. Sometimes there's just no point.

Heck, even I knew there was going to be no timeouts. It made no sense to take one.

Manning calling plays was not that big of a deal either. It's something he basically does when he's on the field anyway.

Don't forget that the Titans were on Indy's 24 yard line, which is a 40 yard FG. Easy one for Rob Bironas to make. The Titans were never in danger of punting like mono's article claims. If the Colts called time out, the Titans would have kicked a FG, gone up by nine points, and any hope of a miracle last second comeback is gone. So I don't get what Thunder Dan is so mad about. If I am speaking for all Browns fans, I think we are just happy that the Browns won more games than they lost and that they are not a complete crap team like they have been since 99. We don't shoot for Super Bowls in Cleveland, at this point we just take a .500 season. In time we will get worked up about the playoffs. You have to remember we have had 2 Monday Night Games since 1999, that is the level of the Browns. We are just happy they removed themselves from the bottom of the NFL.

BTW, my I had to watch MY Browns team leave town and win a Super Bowl with another emblem on their helmets. They used to go to the AFC championship game every other year. I'm certainly not happy with missing the playoffs, especially when the only real result is that it kills the value of the draft pick my other team is supposed to get. Moral victories are for losers.
