Did Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee ans coaches have an under-the-table agreement at the end of last Sunday's game?
Tennessee quarterback Kerry Collins said on WFAN Radio on Thursday that the ans kneeled at the end of the game Sunday because they knew the Colts wouldn't call a timeout.
With Tennessee leading 16-10 and needing a victory to make the playoffs, the ans had originally called a running play, Collins said. But the team changed to a kneeldown when he was told over his headset that the Colts wouldn't call a timeout, which would have possibly forced the ans to punt with less than 20 seconds left in the game, Collins said.
"Apparently there was some communication between Jeff (Fisher) and Tony (Dungy)," Collins said on WFAN.
Fisher said he knew Dungy wouldn't use the timeout because he's so familiar with the Colts coach's thinking, the Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel reported Thursday.
"Let me just say, I knew he wasn't going to use it. Tony and I were on the compe ion committee for a long time," Fisher said, the newspaper reported.
The ans coach also said the Colts would have gotten the ball back with 25 seconds left but down nine because Tennessee would have kicked another field goal, the newspaper reported.
"It didn't make any sense. They gave it their best shot," Fisher said, the News-Sentinel reported.
Dungy congratulated the ans.
"I have to congratulate the ans and I think it is a feather in the cap of our division to get three teams in the playoffs,” Dungy said, Colts.com reported. “They (the ans) certainly deserve it.”
If true, the Cleveland Browns could possibly file a grievance alleging collusion, which is against NFL rules. The Browns would have made the playoffs if the ans had lost.
Collins also said he thought starting quarterback Vince Young was day-to-day, but "he'll do whatever he needs to do to get ready to play."
If it was a situation in which punting was an option, the TO should have been called.
Colts*
doesn't the NFL have a rule that every team must make an effort to win every game no matter what? And also collusion.
Yepppppp looks like a clear violation of NFL rules. I wonder when Goodell will announce the stripping of an Indy draft pick and slap a half-mil fine on Saint Dungy?there's a better chance of T Park turning down a waffle.
This better not be true. Cowboys need as high a pick from the Browns as they can get, damn it!
in all honestly it's not a big deal except to Browns fans. and then it's a HUGE deal.
actually this helped out the Cowboys. but still, those dirty cheating Colts are up to their shenanigans again!
there's no guarantee they make the FG there. there could be a block returned for a TD.
or they make the FG and the colts get a TD kickoff return & then get the onside kick.
either way, the Colts clearly violated NFL rules with collusion and by not putting an honest effort into winning the game. I'll look forward to seeing Dungy smacked with a $500,000 fine. it will be quite a wait. nobody questions Saint Dungy.
i'm sure Polian is finding a way to blame the Patriots for this.
Yeah I thought it was painfully obvious that Dungy threw that game just to let the AFC South's wang grow an inch.
Besides, we won 13 games and earned a bye. If the Colts want to throw a meaningless Week 17 game, they have that luxury. The ans road to the Super Bowl goes through San Diego, New England and then Indy. . . it was over before it began.
this is the stupidest thread ever. i think jeffdrums makes more reasonable threads than this one.
Dude the Browns won 10 games this year. You were looking at a 20 or higher pick anyway. Deal with it. You should have wanted the Browns to not get in since it guarantees a better draft pick.
and if every team must make every effort to win every game, then every high seeded team should get penalized at the end of the year for not playing starters that are in perfectly fine physical condition to play another game.
This is just mono trying to make other teams look bad. You know, teams that are smart enough to not get caught for taping sideline signals.
yeah a news story being reported by MSNBC is really biased.
I'm just bringing it up for any outraged Browns fans who want to complain about the dirty tactics of the Indianapolis Colts. It's for the Clevelandites not me.
no. its just pointless.
tell that to MSNBC. i'm doing this for the Clevelandites.
I don't think that's the argument I would have used.
If there's proof that Fisher and Dungy openly agreed to let the game run out then there should be action against both. If the Colts just decided to let it run out because the game was meaningless to them and they wanted to get off the field then there's no problem.
Well, we're sorry our offensive coordinator fainted and we had to pull Manning out of the game to call plays. Watching VY play for a quarter and a half will do that to you.
no. you're doing it to mock the way that people were pissed about the Patriots actually CHEATING.
i'm wondering why nobody has commented "WTF is Kerry Collins doing talking about this? Doesn't he know better??? How ing stupid is he???" then I remembered that it was Kerry Collins.
i haven't said a word about the Patriots until just now. You appear to be way oversensitive about this.
calling for a $500,000 fine to Dungy over nothing is whats oversensitive.
