Still haven't heard an update on the severity of his injury.
slayermin
01-06-2008, 08:53 PM
On Yahoo, he's listed with a sprained big toe and is questionable at Indy. He counts on his athlecisim to create separation or jump for passes. The injury doesn't sound too bad but it could hurt his effectiveness in running routes and jumping.

All I've heard so far is that Gates xrays were negative. Severe sprain, no word on playing status.

Yep I think SD upsets Indy... and maybe even NE. With the talent on SD they might be able to pull it together. Funny how a team that was expected to do something the year before and they fall, that they are able to get over the hump the next year.

Dude you're a shit eating moron if you think the Chargers D is going to get six pickoffs again. I lulzed at Phil Simms fellate the Chargers D and their 30 pickoffs saying how their stats were so far ahead of everyone else today. Fuck off. The Chargers D and especially Anthony Cromartie are fucking overrated specifically because of the Indy game. I expect a good game, but the Chargers shouldn't be too confident coming into this game because they realize their special teams won them that game and their offense got rocked by Indy's D all night.

I'd be shocked if the Colts lose this game. They played as bad as possible against the Chargers the last time and still almost pulled it out. The Chargers have too many choke-prone parts. Norv Turner, Philip Rivers, Chris Chambers -- this aren't exactly the guys I'd pick to go to war with, especially with Gates likely out.
Only way the Chargers pull this out is if LT carries the team ... but LaDirkian doesn't strike me as a big game player, either.

Colts are #1 in points allowed and may as well be #1 against the pass since they were #2 and Tampa was eliminated today. . . and they played half the season without Freeney. Clearly his injury set them back a few years.

I'm curious!!!Peyton's nvts dropped sometime last year and he finally played well in the playoffs. I like the Addai/Keith combo. Reggie Wayne is better than the entire Chargers receiving corps. And Bob Sanders is probably the best player either team has on defense ... now that Merriman is off the juice.

Freeney draws double teams. The Colts really don't have anyone else that commands that type of respect.
It should be a great game because I don't know if the Chargers are really ready. But I think they have some very talented athletes on their team and are more than capable of winning in Indy.
You've seen Freeney play more than I have. Are you telling me I'm wrong about him being the best pass rusher in the NFL?
He was probably the best pass rusher in the NFL this season before he got hurt, but last season he had an average year. If he didn't get hurt I think the Colts would have finished a lot stronger than they did defensively, which is scary considering they are probably the best all around defense left in the playoffs. I think Jacksonville might get exposed a little against NE since the Pats don't run the ball much. But snow or freezing rain might force the Pats to rely on Maroney more than they would otherwise, which would probably be the gamebreaker for them against Jacksonville.
I'm just saying, "No Dwight Freeney" is definitely not a game breaker for the Colts against the Chargers. Maybe against NE, but definitely not against the Chargers. Josh Thomas has done an admirable job filling in for him.

You do not understand how phenomenally different the game is going to be with Harrison, Clark and Gonzalez in the line up. I guess in San Diego they consider "holding" a team to 386 yards total offense and two TDs getting rocked. Dallas Clark was supposed to start that game and was benched as a game time decision. When you spend a week practicing with a go-to guy like Clark and suddenly he is not in the game, that forces you to throw to guys you don't have many reps with. QB-WR timing is important, and aside from the tipped pass that was picked, that's what the other four early pickoffs were. Bad timing with receivers Peyton doesn't usually throw to. So you can fuck off now.
And you are proud of the loss? :lmao
As fucked up as it sounds, yeah. We played one of the absolute worst games of the seasons and for all intents and purposes were in great position to win. Then they take away our first down and Vinatieri shanks a kick.

That kind of thing happens all the time. Player gets some reps in practice and then the trainers play it safe and yank them before kickoff. You're an idiot.

What difference does it make? He practiced, then they yanked him before kickoff to play it safe like they've done with every injured player this year. Then Peyton has to throw to guys he didn't get reps in practice with, and it showed. It's not hard, but I can understand why you don't get it.

-Darren Sproles got two return TDs in the Week 10 game. That more than likely will not happen again.
-Vinatieri shanked two kicks he should have made. The first one I can see why he missed it since they were running the fire drill, but the second he should have made. That more than likely will not happen again.
-Peyton was picked off six times and that slowed the offense down the entire first half. With his top receivers healthy this time, that will not happen again.
-The Colts D contained LT to what like 75 yards on 21 carries? Puh-leeze.
-The Colts DBs have the size to match up with SD's receivers, and will play them physical.
-The Colts have the edge in coaching, multiplied by 10 to the power of 5.
Any other questions? With Gates hurt, I can't see the Chargers pulling it out. All the homerism between us aside, the Colts have the better team.

Peyton's nvts dropped sometime last year and he finally played well in the playoffs. I like the Addai/Keith combo. Reggie Wayne is better than the entire Chargers receiving corps. And Bob Sanders is probably the best player either team has on defense ... now that Merriman is off the juice.

Dungy seems to give the Chargers more credit than JT.
“People have told me we’re healthier and we’re playing better and I believe that’s true,” Dungy said. “I don’t think we’ll play a game like we played out there, but I think San Diego’s better. They were in the process of finding themselves, too, early in the year. I think they’re pretty grooved, with a seven-game winning streak and knowing what they do well. They’ve looked pretty good in the last few weeks to me."
What have I said about the Chargers other than they only won because of some rare fucking mistakes that won't happen again? Pfft. Obviously making the second round means they are a good team.

Turner could have been a great trade piece before this season started, but after going 14-2 you can't get rid of a great backup in case of a Tomlinson injury, although, Sproles has shown he can manage the backup role quite well. I'm excited to see Turner get a full time role and hope to see more of him this next game vs. the Colts.

Why would I be scared of the Colts, I'm not playing. Am I scared for my team? Not in the least bit. The previous two matchups will back up my stance. Its not like teams playing head games with the injury report is anything new, i mean tom brady has has "shoulder- probable" for like his entire career. I would trust the newspaper over the team because teams have been known to lie about injuries.
The chargers also want indy to prepare for gates and it might waste some of their time if they practice for him and he doesn't play, but indy is a smart team i dont think they will fall for it.

With Gates likely out, it will be interesting to see how Nanee does filling in for him. Nanee, in the limited time I've seen him, has shown some promise and has very good hands, plus he is similar in size to Gates. The only reason I'm not devastated by the loss of Gates (imagine the Colts losing Wayne or the Pats losing Moss) is because the Colts have covered TE's better than anyone in the league.

Gates or no Gates, Colts shut down TEs
Cold, Hard Football Facts for January 8, 2008
By Jonathan Comey
Cold, Hard Football Facts Gates-keeper
The status of Antonio Gates for Sunday’s Chargers at Colts game will be one of the stories of the week.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Gates will “almost certainly” miss the game at Indianapolis, a huge blow to San Diego. But the Chargers, as they should, are keeping him active and making the Colts at least plan for the possibility he'll play.
For the Chargers, losing Gates is akin to the Colts losing Reggie Wayne or the Patriots losing Randy Moss – he’s their go-to guy.
Gates, after all, has represented more than a quarter of San Diego’s passing offense over his four-year run as a full-time starter:
* 2004: 964 yards (27.4 percent)
* 2005: 1,101 yards (29.5 percent)
* 2006: 924 yards (27.1 percent)
* 2007: 984 yards (31 percent)
And he’s represented an even greater chunk of San Diego’s passing touchdowns:
* 2004: 13/29 (44.8 percent)
* 2005: 10/27 (37 percent)
* 2006: 9/24 (37.6 percent)
* 2007: 9/22 (40.9 percent)
That’s an awful lot of production to lose from one player, especially when there’s no reason to believe that backup TE Brandon Manumaleuna (10 TDs in 110 games, including 62 starts) can even begin to replace him.
However, there is a very small silver lining to Gates’ probable absence – their opponent, Indianapolis, has been incredibly tough on tight ends this year.
The Colts’ pass defense numbers are truly bizarre, but quite good. They’re not going to sack you (28, tied for 26th), and they’re not going to force a lot of incompletions (65.3 percent complete against them, 29th). Basically, if you want to throw a short slant or quick turnaround route, they’ll let you do it. Hell, they want you to do it.
But in the end, only Pittsburgh (5.7 yards per pass, unadjusted for sacks) allowed fewer yards per pass than Indy (5.9), because the Colts led the league in yards-per-catch allowed by a longshot.
The average completion against the Colts went for 9.0 yards, almost a yard lower of No. 2 Tennessee and 2.4 yards lower than the league average.
And the Colts were very, very stingy against tight ends.
In most seasons, tight ends average somewhere between 10 and 11 yards a catch league-wide. But the Colts limited TEs to 559 yards on 70 catches this year – 7.99 yards per grab, in keeping with Indy's overall lockdown on long passes.
And here’s the best stat: the Colts didn’t allow a tight end a catch of 20+ yards until Tennessee’s Ben Hartsock stretched out for a 21-yarder in that meaningless Week 17 loss at home.
Gates, in his first meeting with the Colts, caught 3 passes for 26 yards. Kansas City's great Tony Gonzalez caught 4 for 46 yards in a 13-10 Indy victory in November.
The Panthers, in a 31-7 October loss to Indy, produced 11 tight end catches for 96 yards against the Colts, the only standout game by an opposing TE group. Overall, the Colts held 14 of 16 opponents under 60 total TE yards.
Are the Chargers better off without Gates? Of course not. But last week against Tennessee, their passing offense took off after Gates went out with his toe injury. WRs Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers both went over 100 yards, after both failed to do so once during the regular season in San Diego.
That was surely more of a fluke than a trend, but it at least should give Norv Turner a shove in that direction vs. Indy.
San Diego's game plan figures to be a lot of LaDainian Tomlinson and whatever the Colts will give them through the air.
Which, regardless of Gates’ status, doesn’t figure to be much to the tight ends.
Yeah, I really got exposed for taking a single idea out of the article and agreeing with it. Does the article mention Nanee too? :rolleyes

What ticks me off is asshats like you thinking Peyton throwing six picks against San Diego in a game where he was throwing to Reggie Wayne, a guy who's name literally is "Crap (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7292)" and Aaron fucking Moorehead is somehow typical. You do not understand how phenomenally different the game is going to be with Harrison, Clark and Gonzalez in the line up. SD should consider itself lucky as hell that they picked Manning off six times and somehow did not lose that game as badly as their offense was dominated.You've made it seem the whole time that the Chargers only got six picks because Manning was throwing to backups.
A poster over at the Chargers board Onyournrvs breaks it down for you.
Pick #1 - 11:22 in the first quarter, Manning tries to force a pass to WR Moorehead in the endzone...into QUADRUPLE coverage. Cro dives for the ball and comes up with the pick (stay in the endzone, kid!). Now, I know that Manning is arguably the best QB in the league, but COME ON!!! Quadruple coverage? That was just a bonehead mistake on his part. Fault - Manning
Pick #2 - 9:35 in the first quarter, Manning attempts to dump a pass off to TE Fletcher. Shaun Phillips read Manning the whole way, put himself between Manning and his target, jumped up, tipped the ball and came down with the pick. A tremendous individual effort on the part of Phillips and another bonehead play by Peyton. Fault - Manning
Pick #3 - 2:16 in the first quarter (is the 1st quarter over yet?!), Manning severely underthrows veteran WR Reggie Wayne. Cro makes a turn and dives for the ball, scooping it up like the pro bowl corner he is. Another bonehead play by the best quarterback in the league. Fault - Manning
Pick #4 - 14:24 in the second quarter. If the 49ers have "The Catch" this is "The Pick". Attempting to throw a pass over Cro's head to veteran WR Reggie Wayne (in single coverage mind you), Cro leaps up and makes arguably the most gorgeous one-handed interception in recent history. Manning had to have been stunned to see Cro get up there and make that grab. Bad throw by Peyton. He should have known better than to go to that side. Stupid Peyton. Fault - Manning
Pick #5 - 11:00 in the third quarter. Manning once again tries to force a pass to WR Moorehead this time into TRIPLE coverage! Instead of Moorehead, he throws the ball straight into the hands of Matt Wilhelm. Stupid, stupid pass. Fault - Manning
Pick #6 - 0:09 in the fourth quarter. Desperate now for any kind of game winning miracle, Manning heaves the ball to anyone willing to catch it. Apparently the Colts receivers weren't interested, so Clinton Hart went ahead and grabbed it. Desperate times call for stupid throws. Fault - Manning
It appears throwing to third stringers didn't have much to do with it at all.
And your comment about how Gonzalez would have made an impact..........how many total catches did the rookie have coming into the Chargers game? :lol

My client, J.T., would like me to remind you that the two picks on Moorehead were in multiple coverages, as you just pointed out there. Moorehead was playing Harrison's position since Gonzalez was also out in that game, and he is clearly not on the same level as Harrison. According to Tom Condon, a friend of mine who just happens to be Harrison's agent, Harrison can catch passes while covered by multiple guys. He's just that good. He's been known to nut all over the secondaries of many teams. Tom wanted me to remind you guys that Harrison was the first guy to score on Deion Sanders, and that you all can only dream of holding this man's nuts one day. So obviously, according to my good friend Tom and reiterated by J.T., you would see a much different game if Harrison had played that. Because you could put the entire secondary on him and he will still eat you alive.
As for the last interception, J.T. implores you to check NFL video archives of last second deep balls thrown in comeback situations. This happens a lot. J.T., admittedly not a Chargers fan, assumes that future HOF QB Phil Rivers has probably done this five times already, and if he hasn't is likely to do it many more times than Manning will for the rest of his career, so you really have no leg to stand on here.
However, J.T. will concede that the Colts did get owned by Cromartie on those two picks when he was covering Wayne, and the tipped INT by Phillips. Great plays, says J.T. He has nothing to say about those, they're just that good.
At the end of the day my personal opinion is that on Sunday, Manning is more likely to find the end zone six times than the hands of guys wearing white. If you would like to relay anything back to J.T., please send me a PM and I will email it to him.
Thanks

So Manning doesn't know he's throwing to Moorehead because if only Harrison can catch in mulitple coverage why would he throw to Moorhead in the first place?
Manning just threw into the coverage he was supposed to..

My client says I did not fully iterate his response here. Manning underestimated Moorehead's ability to beat coverage, because Harrison is so damn good. First off if you replace Rivers with Cutler that SD team gets loads better. Cutler is easily the best QB of the 06 draft. Better than Young and Mr "I keep losing my job to Kurt Warner". Second, I'm sorry man but you guys barely beat the Titans, and even though the Colts have about 3-4 key players injured, they will still beat the Chargers.

It's the old "whore" technique, but it's not a hold. The Chargers got hosed on that one -- and once again, a visiting team gets hosed on an important call in a playoff game in Indianapolis.
Edit: upon seeing the super slo-mo replay, I can see a possible hold. It's still odd to me that so many seemingly bad calls go against the visiting teams in Indianapolis at playoff time.
