I went and saw this movie tonight and I have to say it was actually pretty good. I worry when I see a movie that I think I'll like because I'm usually left disappointed.
Overall I enjoyed the cinematography and the story but as a little warning if you're prone to motion sickness don't eat before the movie because there were quite a few people complaining about the shaking camera making them sick

I copied this from the other thread about this movie, sorry, Kori. I just really want to let people know how bad it was.
OK guys and girls.
I just got back from seeing it at the Palladium as a sneak preview.
It was AWFUL
Save your money, it was very bad.
I wont spoil it, but I will answer some questions that people were speculating.
1. it IS like The Blair Wich Project. All first person, camcorder perspective, if you get
motion sickness, this probably isn't for you.
2. You don't know what or where the monster came from, all you know is that it exists.
3. This movie sucks, 110% hype. really folks, save your money.
Sorry to be a downer about all of this, I was really excited to see it too. Glad I saw it for free, because if I had paid for it, I would be really pissed right now.
Xoloto, how could you like that man?
Everyone in the theater I went to was either like "what the fuck?" or just plain pissed.
I felt kind of bad for the Paramount Rep that was there, she couldn't have felt comfortable showing everyone there that crap for a movie.

Naw man I'm not saying its the Godfather or anything, but it's definitely not the worst movie I've ever seen. Like I said in my first post I enjoyed the cinematography because even though it made me want to puke it just added realism.
I agree with some things you said like about the monster just appearing and not knowing where it came from is kinda dumb along with some other things that I wish were explained further.

Thank goodness that Bourne Ultimatum's moving cameras were only doing the fight scenes mostly. I could deal with that. But if this movie have those first person camera's like those video games have I might not be able to make it thru that movie and I'm being dead serious.

It's just a fictional company made up by JJ Abrams to take a role in his movies. From what I read on Wikipedia (I dont know how reliable it is)....
MINOR SPOILER
they're the ones that hired the guy and the reason he was going to leave for Japan which is why the party was thrown.
I know its not a big deal to say that stuff but I just want to warn some people who want to go in not knowing anything

Just saw this thing.
First off, all the warnings about motion sickness are absolutely for real. I usually never get motion sickness but I was about ready to vomit by the time the movie was over.
Overall, this movie was decent for what it was. A fun, stupid monster movie. I'd put this ahead of crap like Transformers because at least the dialogue isn't the most hideous selection of contrived, hamfisted words ever assembled. That's mainly because the only things people say are "oh shit!", "holy shit!", "oh my god!", and "what the hell was that?" but it's certainly alot better than watching Even Stevens fumble with shitty lines declaring his undying love for a transforming sports car.
People with super high expectations are going to be disappointed as shit, along with anybody who put any stock in all that viral marketing.
So overall, it's not the greatest thing ever, but it doesn't suck as much as Transformers or whatever the lastest McG film is. For a big dumb "Godzilla" type movie, it's pretty decent. Bring a barf bag, but I think people will generally like this.

Nothing at all, apparently you're supposed to get the entire plot of the movie from all the viral marketing rather than the actual movie.

huh? So this is where the few people who didn't like cloverfield are! for those who haven't seen it and only read what others here have said let me say it's good. It's much like M. Night Shaymalan's work in that it's not a movie about a monster, it's a movie about a man who's in love with a woman and goes into hell to save her. For those of you who liked Signs you'll probably like this if the shaky cam doesn't bother you. It doesn't explain what happened, where it came from, or why it attacked. But why does it have to? Imagination is fun, leaving things unexplained is good. There isn't a happy ending, but i hate happy endings.

Yeah, i got sick. And ive never heard parents and kids alike just yell out curses when the credits are shown, so that was interesting. Without the rocking-boat grade cinematography, id give it a C. With it, an F. When a big part of your audience cant even watch half the movie, you have a problem.

We just got back from seeing it. It was FAR from the worst movie I've seen.
I didn't feel the intense-ness that I felt when seeing I Am Legend, but it was definitely "good". People expecting to have all their questions answered about the monster, what happens to the people,etc...don't know J.J. Abrams. If you keep in mind his style, you won't be disappointed.
When we first entered AMC, they had a sign posted on the Cloverfield promo poster warning about motion sickness. Apparently a bunch of people got sick on opening night. Gross! We sat towards the top of the theater and we were fine, no sickness or dizziness.

^ lol @ elpimpo. I can kind of see where you're coming from, but I liked Juno very much. I can respect someone who can explain why they didn't like it though, rather than saying something like "it sucked" and leaving it at that.
*** some spoilers ***
As for Cloverfield... I actually enjoyed it alot. It was creative, very comical at times, and of course intense. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm glad the monster was more of a backdrop than anything, didn't necessarily dominate the film. As for the plot, it was hard to believe that anybody in their right mind would follow Robert Hawkins around everywhere he went, but there had to be a camera man, right? Some of the acting was nothing to write home about, but it sufficed. The film was fairly realistic, like the ending for example. I hope people aren't going into the movie expecting some fairytale ending, or explanation (how could it be "known" where it came from and what it was, within the time it arrived and the time Hawkins and Beth died? Maybe from another persons perspective (gov. official or something) we would know or find out more, but not theirs, they were just pedestrians who happened to catch it all on tape). Seems more realistic to leave things unanswered. Also, I don't know if people are spoiled by amazing CGI nowadays, but Cloverfield had some of the best I've seen recently, and not just the monster. The overall demolition of NYC was surreal. It really felt (imo) like you were in the movie. That, regardless of the plot, was a sign of success to me.... I didn't get motion sickness at any point of the movie. I've gotten more sick from a "Medal of Honor" videogame than I have from this movie. Numerous shots were 'pretty' steady, almost to relieve the audience every now and then. Could see how some might get a little sick though.

yea i just read about it elsewhere. the satellite thing? I really don't like that idea. i like the idea of the monster dropping from the sky, manifesting and growing for a month, and then coming out a lot better than things falling from the sky and disturbing a gigantic monster that was living in the ocean :wtf
ace3g
01-19-2008, 06:55 PM
thats the thing you can use your imagination on this film, yes JJ Abrams did say the monster has been at the bottom of the ocean for a long time but he could be messing with you as well and that scene in the movie was in deed the monster falling from the sky.
Its the perfect way to get people to go back and see the movie again, more than half the people that saw it last night didn't even see the thing fall from the sky, hell I even missed it and I was looking for something because the camera was focused on the ocean for a long time but I missed it
Also not everyone stayed till the end of the credits to hear the distorted voice that says something like help us coming from Rob, so he could technically be alive
But again I can understand why some people don't like the movie, I'm just a big JJ Abrams fan so I knew going in to the movie that not all of the questions would be answered since this is from the perspective of civilians

I hated this movie. I thought I was going to see an interesting new twist on a monster flick, instead I got some fucking "The WB"-esque cheesy teen love story with a monster story as the backdrop. Seriously, I could have just DVRed "Gossip Girl" if I wanted to see a bunch of rich and fashionable 20-somethings bullshit.
If I wasn't with my wife and several friends, I would have walked out 45 minutes in, and I NEVER walk out of movies.

I thought it was good, it was a pretty original idea, and I'll give it credit for that.
The previously mentioned motion sickness is for real, shit like that never bothers me, but my buddy had to leave the movie, and it took a lot for me to sit through the whole movie. Its pretty comparable to The Host, but the camcorder does wear on you through the movie. The beginning was pretty slow, but the movie picks up a good pace halfway through. The monster is badass. I thought overall it was worth the money spent, although I would not see it again in theaters.

I don't ever get sea sick or motion sickness, not on cruises or boats or rollercoasters or airplanes, never have in my entire life, but I sat right at the freaking front of the theater and the shaking camera definitely got to me a little bit...I didn't read any reviews or spoilers.
Overall it could have been a halfway decent movie...it was definitely a neat idea and a nice spin on the classic giant monster movie...but making people nauseous is stupid...not many people like to be nauseated, it weakens whatever appeal the movie has.

Just got back from the movie, and it was a huge waste of time. It's a bunch of people running around for like 80 minutes. Perhaps ten minutes of cool action, and there rest of walking, plus the massively unnecessary twenty minute party scene. Not at quite the level of massive suck contained within Juno, but I'm pissed I spent nine bucks on it.

We just picked a random movie that was showing at that time, had no idea what it was about. We actually ran into a bunch of nerds that go to my school that went to see that movie again and they were in our theater reserving the back two rows for all the people they invited.
I thought the movie was different and it made it fun, I thought it was pretty good, just a weak ending I guess, but there's really no way to wrap up that movie. But it wasn't soo good to see it two times in a row.
