So, I'm hoping all those fairweather fans that were thinking the world was going to end can go away now.

I'm willing to bet that we'll have the 1 or 2 seed by the end of the season.

The Spurs are actually the fifth seed right now.

It would be, but I don't see the Mavericks living up to their end of that bargain.

They would have to be the two seed in order for that to play out. Not very likely.

or we would have to catch new orleans for the second spot, and drop below los angeles, and then have the mavs keep their seventh spot.

You're right, we currently have the 5th seed.

But, I'm sure Houston will loose a couple down the road and I'm hopefull that the Hornets have three possible losses coming on the road (Boston, Orlando, Lakers). 8 of their next 12 games will be on the road.

We got Houston on Sunday, so I'm pretty sure we'll be in second place. Plus, Houston has 7 of their next 10 games on the road.

I can see a #1 seed in our future.

just looking at that sched, the Spurs should do no worse than 7-3 and really should go 8-2.

HOU, LAL and SAS all are at 49-23, being seeded #2, #3 and #5 respectively as of this morning. (HOU currently owns all tie breakers between the three)

HOU does not play again until Sunday. Considering that both LAL and SAS play on Friday, with both teams winning, HOU could drop from #2 to #5 without even playing a game. That's tough...

rascal
03-27-2008, 11:11 AM
Hou will not hold on to the number 2 position. The spurs will be moving up to 1 or 2 by next week.

If the Spurs beat Houston on Sunday they'll be in 3rd.

If the Spurs win Friday they will already be in 3rd (and potentially 2nd) before playing the Rockets.

Friday night outcomes:

IF both Spurs and Lakers win: 2. LAL (50-23) 3. SAS (50-23) 5. HOU (49-23)

IF Spurs win and Lakers lose: 2. SAS (50-23) 3. HOU (49-23) 5. LAL (49-24)

IF Lakers win and Spurs lose: 2. LAL (50-23) 3. HOU (49-23) 5. SAS (49-24)

The only way that the Rockets can keep their #2 seed before their next game on Sunday is if both Lakers and Spurs lose Friday night.

The nba.com standings are wrong. We should be the third seed, because we own a 2-1 series tie breaker between the Lakers at this moment. We have identical records so the tiebreaker goes to season records vs. each other, and we are 2-1 over the Lakers. Peewee is right, the nba.com standings are wrong.

You are wrong. The Lakers get the #3 seed because they lead their division.

The Division leaders no longer get an automatic 1 2 or 3 seed. Only a guaranteed HCA seed. Thats why when PHX had a better record than Utah, Utah still was in 4th place.

Pretty sure it works the other way...Division leaders are ranked 1/2/3 but that does not ensure them HCA...that goes to better record.

dogzofwar
03-27-2008, 04:53 PM
Correction....three of the four top spots are for division leaders with the last spot for who has the next best record...which is Houston because of tie breaker (2 seed) at this time. A division leader can never be lower than number 4 no matter what their record is...which is complete crap. At least the HCA isn't based on that anymore.

Playoff Seeding Primer

SECAUCUS, NJ, April 2, 2007 -- Confused by the new playoff seeding format? Were you confused by the old format?

Last season, much ado was made about the Spurs and Mavs, the teams with the two best records in the Western Conference, meeting in the Conference Semifinals because of the rule that gave the top three seeds to the division winners.

So, during the offseason, that rule was changed so that the two best teams in the conference would not face each other until the Conference Finals, even if they're in the same division.

As the regular season wraps up and some teams clinch playoff berths while others are eliminated, here's everything you need to know about how the playoff brackets are laid out.

The top four seeds will be the three division winners plus the team with the next best record. Those four will be ordered by record (and tiebreakers if needed), so it's possible that two teams in the same division could hold the top two spots, with the other two division winners at Nos. 3 and 4.

Seeds 5 through 8 are the next four teams according to record (and tiebreakers if needed).

First Round matchups are as follows:

1 vs. 8
4 vs. 5
2 vs. 7
3 vs. 6

Conference Semifinals matchups are as follows:

1-8 Winner vs. 4-5 Winner
2-7 Winner vs. 3-6 Winner

Homecourt advantage for any series is determined by record, not seed. So, it's possible that the 5 seed could have homecourt advantage over the 4, or that the 6 seed could have homecourt advantage over the 3.

Tiebreakers

(1) Head-to-head
(2) Division record (if the teams are in the same division)
(3) Conference record
(4) Record vs. Playoff teams, own conference
(5) Record vs. Playoff teams, other conference
(6) Net points, all games
