View Full Version : Worst Loss of Year

I thought Utah was bad. You would have expected Spurs to come out and stay so determined and thump the Rockets but no:

Large lead after 1st. Then just overall pathetic effort:

Made one good run to take lead in 4th but otherwise, outrebounded, Manu injured, critical turnovers, MVP did not put team on his backs, out-hustled, lack of assists, at least one bad call, team out-played + coach with a dumb move = what more could a fan have to be angry and very concerned about?

Pop who played an integral part in this disaster tonight - has been proven right about comment re record "fools gold". It would take a convincing sweep of next week to change this fan's opinion.

Dumb ass Techical after they already had gotten a point on a bad call.

Announcer screaming on WOAI that Pop needed to settle down and he did not - it is not all on him though. Missed Fts but more importantly turnovers on consecutive possessions it was just pathetic last 3 and 1/2. In a sense this hurts more than the 1st time to Rockets - that was an amazing display by McGrady - this was a team just not getting it done!!!

Would Manu have made a difference = he would not have hurt the cause thats for sure!

Addendum: If a player had got the same T - Pop would lose it.

Of course, guys like Devin Brown, and others bricking shots and shooting 32% tonight had zero to do with it, right Ag?

You're spoiled with wins over injured teams

Who was injured on Phoenix?

1Parker1
01-15-2005, 11:17 PM
It was missed FT's again. We were like 16-26 or something. Duncan missed 2 crucial ones in the end as did Horry.
Also, Duncan did not carry the team as he should have in a close game like this. He was dissapointing in the final minutes of the game. I'd expect more clutchness from a former 2 time MVP and finals MVP. I don't know what's been going on with him lately, but he hasn't been playing his dominating self lately.

I love it. Blame Devin Brown. Good call Tpark, he took all of four shots tonight. But Pop throws it in to Tim Duncan to the tune of 6-18 and absolutely no ball movement tonight on offense, and it's a good call.

Barry and Parker were a combined 11-22 tonight (that's 50% to Duncan's 33%), yet got a combined three touches in the fourth quarter. And yet you rail against Devin Brown's 1 for 4 performance?

You and Pop have to be related, it's the only way you can have a take as stupid as that one.

Rummpd
01-15-2005, 11:20 PM
Why were they shooting 32%? Seemed like they were settling for jumpers or outside 3s a heck of a lot and poor rebounding = poor chances to make transitions points. Plus it seemed they did not push it when they could. Where was the beautiful ball movement of a month ago, where were the drives inside? Why not pick and roll the slumbering Yao or the older Motumbo who the Spurs make look like his former self.

It is on the players mainly granted. Where was their professionalism and drive? It seemed only Parker had it tonight and even he bricked some Fts - but at least he gave a valid effort tonight.

Well Tpark, Barry shot better than any Spur not named Tony Parker tonight, but I guess seeings he didn't drop 20 in the fourth, that sucks by your standards.

Why not pick and roll the slumbering Yao or the older Motumbo who the Spurs make look like his former self.

Because, the pick and roll is on page two of the playbook, and all we brought to Houston was a 3" x 5" index card.

Rummpd

30 and 9 is not unacceptable but even after last night over Mavs Spurs only 4 above dropping into a 4th seed.

Tpark if you are happy over this week - 2 sad losses and a narrow win and have no worries re Spurs more power to you.

Plus, regardless what they shot you would have expected an passionate effort out of each Spur tonight -can you honestly say it was there?

Things could turn around rapidly for the better but the converse is also very true.

Going into crunch time, Spurs had already missed 7 FTs, and missed 3 more to keep the game out of reach. Same ol' Spurs, as sure as death and taxes.

Tim's FTs are a huge black mark on his career.

Tony almost shot two consecutive FT airballs, barely touching the front of the rim. ridiculous.

Spurs defense allowed Hou to score 25 pts in 4th qtr, their best quarter by far in the entire game.

The Spurs fucked up so many ways it's not funny.

Next week's got tough 3 games, anybody for 0-3 next week?

Seriously though, on a postive note, Pheonix also lost, so it's not like we got a game behind. Also, a 30-9 record is still impressive.

I have 3 main concerns with this team:

1)LACK OF ENERGY: It seems as if the Spurs are just going through the movements of the game. I see no drive or energy in their games. Especially when compared to the beginging of the season, when they were playing awesome Defense, moving the ball, etc.
2) TIM DUNCAN: I know he was sick, but, he hasn't been himself for quite some time now. He was great in the Dallas game the other night, but other than that he hasn't been his dominating self. Definitely not playing like a former two time MVP.
3) ROTATIONS: Pop seems confused with them at times, when to rest certain players, what combo's to use, etc.

That's just my take...

Tired, sloppy defensive game that is Spurs/Rockets.

The best prescription for everyone in here is to get some rest, wash some clothes, do some dishes, go to church, shoot hoops in the driveway, get up a 3 on 3 game and show everyone how easy it is for you to play and not mess up like those Spurs do.

1) The back to back of excuse them they are tired is a tired excuse.

No Spur played extensive minutes last night. Dirk went 47 and is probably starring tonight. Iverson went 48 friggin minutes yesterday after being too ill to play and having shoulder contusion last week and probably doing better than
Duncan today.

2) I will take TParks px to let it go now.

This isn't the worst loss of the year, we just happen to lose to bad teams often.

We shouldn't lose to good teams, and the spurs did that twice to the Sonics, so the worst loss of the year is the 1 in the 19-1 record.

Where the fuck was Duncan? Answer: getting punked by Yao and J Howard. How the fuck does he make $14M a year and disappear in games like this. David Robinson would have stepped up. Have some fuckin pride Tim. If your injured then admit it and sit out a few games.

It's the same old story, really. Spurs have two different teams: the one where they play hard D, hustle for rebounds, have good ball movement, and an unstoppable TD in the middle and driving TP and Manu. This team is BEST IN THE LEAGUE.

But then there's this other team that plays like they're lost, or didn't show up for the game, like they don't know who their teammates are. And they lose, every time.

I hope the first team picks up some speed heading into the playoffs.

Spur's lost to an improving Rocket's team in Houston and without Manu. It doesn't seems to me that this one is worst than any other Spur's loss.
I am much more worried about Tim Duncan latest games but we can only hope that it will not last and that he will play again like an MVP.
About POP I just think that he has a clear gameplan and he hates to change it. It' is always the same, Tony make his run in the third and then he has no play run for him in the 4th when Tim and Manu steps up.
The problem was that against Houston neither Manu (injured) nor Tim were giving points to the Spurs . Why POP didn't give more opportunities to tp to carry this team to the victory? He was the only one playing basket ball tonight.
I am just looking for Duncan to improve his game because without that championship is just a fool's hope.

How many years does this have to happen before you guys learn to live with it. The Spurs don't play consistent ball until March. Every year it's the same thing, they play well enough in December and January to hang around the top half of the league. They don't hit their stride until March. Fortunately, they happen to be winning some games and are at the top of the league. C'mon people, wait until March to really be concerned.

This is the curse of being a fan. When we lose I know I have to bitch, it used to be to my wife, now it's on this forum. I understand we have to lose some games, what bothers me is that guys don't step up with the game on the line, last night, Barry passed up some open shots as did Tony and Devin and Bowen, and finally an off Duncan has to force a shot up or make a bad play with the shot clock winding down. In 99 we had Elie who would take that shot, in 03 it was Kerr and no-no-yes yes Sjax. I think Manu is not intimidated but I don't know, otherwise, close games are going to come down to this, getting the ball in to TD with 3 or 4 guys hanging on him, man that's not right. MVP or not that's a tough sell for anyone.

Here in europe there are some people that bitch to much, but here on this forum its becoming ridiciolus :(whats rediciolus is acceptance of a loss to an inferior opponent...i guess losing 4 straight after being up 2-0 is acceptable to. I just hope the team especially TIM DUNCAN doesnt accept loses as easily as some people around here, MJ never did.

For those of you accepting the losses, the Spurs are 0-2 against two western conference teams Seattle and Houston. In all four games the constant was indifference by TIM DUNCAN.

And for those of you who say wait until March...past performance is no guarentee of future excellence.

Solid D
01-16-2005, 01:25 PM
The Spurs laid an egg offensively and you can credit Houston's length, Mutombo's strong presence - he really bothered Tim, actually every Spur. As expected Malik was too short for this Houston front line, Horry isn't that great of a rebounder any way, and Tim was out of the lane frequently - particularly on the outside-shooting Taylor.

The Spurs didn't make in-game adjustments as well as Houston did. Houston doubled the ball and even sent 2 extras sometimes at Tim with very active hands. Sura stripped the ball twice and shouldn't have been called for fouls. Those were great adjustments and the Spurs weren't crisp in their passes. Houston bogged them down and the Spurs couldn't shoot their way out of it. No rhythm and some of the guys shied away from shooting when they had an opening.

It was a stinker offensively. The Spurs clearly lost their legs in the 4th.

It was an outstanding defensive effort for the most part. I mean...what can you say? The combined 58 points in the first 24 minutes matched the fourth-lowest first half in the shot clock era.

Some quotes:

"Their defense is unbelievable," said McGrady, who made just 10-of-28 shots.

"You like to play aesthetically pleasing and win, but the other team impacts your offense," said Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy, who has guided the Rockets to consecutive wins over the Spurs for the first time since 1997. "We benefited from them playing back-to-back twice (when we've beaten them)."

"He had a huge impact on the game, protecting the basket, rebounding the ball, getting us some extra possessions," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Duncan is obviously a monster. Dikembe fought him hard."

"I played great," Mutombo said. "The reason I was brought here was to play defense, block a shot. They see me coming (and say), 'Mutombo's in the game, watch out.' I like that."

"Their defense was very tough on Timmy," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, who saw his team held 30 points below its season average. "They made it very tough on him."

"When we play Houston, this is how it goes," Duncan said. "You grind it out and whoever makes the shots at the end is the one who wins."

All the Spurs can do is review the breakdowns and try to adjust better the next time they play them....and move on. It's an 82-game season and they have another tough opponent at 4 PM on Monday.

It was a road game, also. And yes, good teams win road games, but I dont remember the Spurs winning big road games last year until their annual 7-9 game road trip. They didnt even do that the year they won it all. This is the time of year where the spurs win a few lose 1 win two lose 1 win 1 lose 2, etc. it happens every year. its happening right now, it happened last year, and it even happened two years ago. Have some faith. If its meant for us to get better and win the championship, then it will happen. We cant change destiny. They never play their best basketball until after the all-star break. all I got to say is that it is easy to complement the other team when you beat them

I just wonder if the complements would have come if the Spurs would have won this game by 1 point?

if the opposition makes adjustments to Tim to lock him up, then Tim needs to make adjustments and quicker desicions to get easy inside baskets for his team mates.

Winning the DAL game was a shitty win, see Spurs in 4th qtr. The benefit was the Spurs didn't totally collapse in the 4th qtr, and Manu hit his FTs in crunch, win salvaged, ugly as shit.

Had the Spurs won last night @HOU, it would have been a shitty win, since the Spurs played shitty all game. Missing 10 FTs, 3 missed in crunch time, in a low-scoring game is suicide.

Get ready for another loss, this one at home. The Wizards aren't my team, even though they're my hometown team. Been against them ever since they brought miracle-man Jordan to ruin them for several years. Not over that blunder yet.

But all that aside, this is a young, aggressive, fundamentally sound team with strengths at every position, inluding off the bench.

The Spurs better forget the Houston loss and focus on a team that may be the team to beat this year.

Wiz allow the most PPG of any team, so Eddie doesn't have them playing defense (which makes wonder whether Eddie was really he guy, as rumored when he left for WAS, behind Byron's 2 defense-oriented Finals appearances with the Nets).

So the Wiz are no different from all other top/better teams: they try to outscore you but don't really make an effort on the other end.

Spurs are unique, to the point of being weird, among the top teams in emphasis on defense-first.

Note that LAL/playoffs beat SA with defense, not offense. And of course DET 04 and Spurs 03 won it with defense/offense total.

I'm not taking the Wiz lightly, but their weakness is defense. PHX led by quite a lot most of the game, and still scored 103 on Wiz, without MVP Nash, as befits the Wiz no-defense game.

The "good" Spurs should win this game easily. I have no idea which Spurs will show up tomorrow night. Spurs will probably get the win, but it will probably be an ugly W.

Then again, it could be like the PHX@SA blowout, too. The outcome, W or L, will be decided by the Spurs (defense), not by the Wiz.

The bar is raised there should be more accountability for lack of FOCUSWhat are you suggest?

Firing Duncan for lack of "focus"?

I am disappointed that we lost another close game but overall, I am not worried.

If Tim's lack of aggression keeps him healthy and the Spurs pull 60+ wins, I will be estatic. I do not see any team in the west that could hang with a healthy Spurs squad in a seven game series. The ultimate goal is to win a championship and I think the Spurs are on the right path.

What is most curious, is that Pops substitution pattern doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason...Also, Barry is finally shooting well. He's hitting 50% from the 3pt line for the month of January...let him play WITH TIM!!! One thing for him has been the change of being a starter for the last 5 years to a 6th man...But the biggest thing, is how are you supposed to get good looks at the hoop when your only getting 4 shots a game, and playing off of Nesterovic or Rose as your post players. I know he was shooting bad, but he's not getting the type of looks the other guys get when they get to shoot wide open as Tim gets double teamed. Give the guy some minutes with Duncan and see how he responds!

P.S. I can't remember the thread, but I saw some talk about no state income taxes in Texas as a factor of why he signed with the Spurs...The people that were saying this, ought to be banned from this forum. Could be the stupidiest thing I've seen written...The guy wants a ring. Oh by the way, there isn't any state income taxes in Seattle either, and he had the option to re-sign with them...

Well, typical pattern would be Spurs suffer a dumb loss on the road, come home and take it out on their next opponent, and I'd say the fact that they'd back home makes this scenario more likely. Barry will start and have a solid game, as he did last time he started.

it must be fun to live your life with such low expectations, and you call me spoiled. I guess people arent raised with the same take pride in your work and work hard and anything can be accomplished attitude anymore. I'm just glad the Spurs players and coaches don't buy into the slacker attitude of I dont care whether I win or lose I'm just here to have fun.

2 championships in 20 years is not that great. Since this is the golden age of the Spurs I just hate to see them throw away chances. Kinda like how Spurs ownership and management wasted David's prime years. Excuse me for wanting better these current Spurs.

so if I got u right,u want them to win 82games???or have the 72-10 bulls season???
I can understand that u want them to do right,u want them to win every game, but since we know they can't win every game,we can still be pleased that they are doing right 30-9,second seaded overall, really, what else do u want???i wanna know what u were saying last year, and the year before that, and then 3years ago,how about the 1996-1997 season???
son, don't burn these guyz, just respect what they are doing, like somebody posted before, play the game, live it and know it,then I'm sure u won't often come and criticize these guys.

what if u had a son, that was always making some slow starts in school, and then, all of a sudden,he's succeding,he's second on his class with A grade overall, but one night,he comes home with a bad exam. would u still emphasize on his bad exam,or u might want to congratulate him on his grade overall, then he might continue, think about that.

there is nothing wrong with him wanting a championship. In fact, thats what we should all be hoping for because these next 4-5 may be the best chances for us to win 2-3 in a row or just 2-3 out of 4-5.

Well, the Spurs just finished embarrassing the Wizards, and without Manu! What can I say, perhaps, " On any given NBA game, one team may not show up." I thought sure a team that has won 7 straight games, against some pretty good teams, would absolutely show up. I was wrong. Is it something about road games? The Wizards hardly put up a fight.

"against some pretty good teams"

huh? Not one of these teams plays ANY defense:

Atlanta W 104 - 101
New Jersey W 112 - 88
Seattle W 107 - 96
Minnesota W 117 - 114
Portland W 104 - 100
@ Milwaukee W 105 - 103
Phoenix W 108 - 103

Like the Spurs@Rockets, throw some serious defense at the jump-shooting offense-only teams, and they go tits up.

The only teams that are serious about D are Spurs, Pacers, Rockets, Pistons. DET won @WAS before the WAS streak, and Spurs won today to end it.

Eddie was at NJ with Byron for the two Finals, so I'm mystified that he doesn't require a defensive effort.
