I must agree with you. I do think that the government should have done more for helping those who had no way out (elderly, handicap, etc.) ... HOWEVER, being poor is not an excuse. People should have gotten off their lazy asses and got the hell out of the city. They had at least 2-3 days to get out. The media just chose to show video clips of the absolute worst citizens that New Orleans has to offer (9th ward, unemployed rats living off of the government). The majority of the GOOD people in New Orleans who lost their homes weren't even shown in the media (other than local news). The media only focused on the worst people living in New Orleans. Trust me, New Orleans has its fair share of trash for citizens just like every city does, but its only a small portion.

WERD...I'll never forget the aerial shot of that flooded lot with all the school buses in it...hmmm, maybe they could've used those to help people GTFO of NO before Katrina hit, ya'think? People at all levels dropped the ball during Katrina. It was a cluster-fuck of monstrous proportions.

We have friends who live here here in Tampa now who lost EVERYTHING in Katrina and had to start over from scratch.

Hopefully, it's the last time we all see something like that.

Not everyone has a car. Look at when they evacuated Houston for Rita. Its hard to move a million people.

Also what you don't know, is that we have Hurricane evacuations every year, (almost). Most of the time the Hurricane turns away and our evacuation turns into a three day trip to see family in Texas. I almost even stayed during Katrina, glad I didn't.

I had to leave my cat and dog behind, many people couldn't. Hell i snuck back in on river road just to get the animals. Then stayed to help. I lost my house to a tornado in the storm, but had no flooding.

Not everyone could evacuate either, how about all those people that died in that nursing home in St. Bernard. I guess they were lazy. T^here was no bus service until afte the storm hit. The government had declared martial law before the storm hit. They could have taken every tourist,transit and school bus in the city and just let people take them, instead they said they didn't have drivers. So the busses flooded. How hard was it to drive to Baton Rouge at <5mph? Failure of the government at every level caused the most damage.

in reference to your nursing home comment, please read my post. obviously the government should have done more, but the MAJORITY of the people could have gotten out. also, this was not a George or other hurricane. it was well known it was going to be the worst ever .. I am sorry for your personal loss by the way.

Wow I am truly sorry you lost your house. And you are a hero for staying to help other people.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't STAY. I went to Houston on August 27th, Katrina hit on the 29th, I drove back on the 1st of September. I planed on staying in Baton Rouge. The day I came back was the day the guard came in. Alll I did to "help" was simple volunteer work. Make sure neighbors were okay, go get ice and food from the soldiers and split them up.
i had got an entry pass on the 3rd to enter New Orleans. The water was still there. We took up clothes donations and brought water and MREs to people.

On the 11th i started doing work in Biloxi, thats where I saw my first DBs. I found a suicide victim in a hotel room of a collapsed Casino. It was sad. Biloxi looked alot worse than New Orleans, looked like a bomb had gone off. Casino boats were on the other side of the road, buildings had colapsed. All the beach houses were gone. Including the Jefferson Davis home. I was staying in a RV in Biloxi when Rita hit.

Bought a house in Baton Rouge in October, By December things were getting back to normal. House is rebuilt now, if I could have done it over I would have done more.

Don't I did all right by insurance. I had Allstate so you know how that goes. They undervalued all the possesions. They tried putting age to every item, Like five years on clothing so they could give you less. I got the $2500 from Fema, $600 from State of Texas, 80,000 SBA loan and am waiting on Road Home money all in all I did pretty good. Still killed my finances, and I got my new house with a ARM loan.

The day after the storm. Texas announced it was going to give all Evacues food benefits. People kept comiong up to us offering money or whatever. I have never seen such an outpouring of support. Every church I passed had clothes and supplies to give out, Firemen where out collecting money, police were off to go help out. Really your state did a hell of a lot.
