Ok, here's the deal. I was having a debate/discussion with a married guy friend and the discussion turned to porn in the marriage. He felt it was ok to openly watch and admit to his wife that he was watching porn while married. She doesn't choose to partake in this activity, and appears to maybe have a problem with him partaking, but it goes on anyway.


In my marriage, my wife's view is that porn is a form of cheating in the marriage-basically using another woman other than your wife to achieve sexual gratification (blowing a load). This was a battle that I didn't want to fight, also considering that I was never a big porn guy anyway.

I also have another friend (married) who keeps it a secret. Tells his wife it's just her and that he doesn't need porn, but then looks at it on the side without telling her.

All of the above brings me to asking the question of men and women in the Spurstalk community, what's your take? Is porn ok in the relationship? Is it a form of cheating? Can it become a problem in terms of having good intimacy with your spouse? Or can it be a part of intimacy when both individuals use it or allow the other spouse to view it?

I have guy friends who aren't even allowed to talk to or look at another woman, even innocently, without the wife getting pissed. At the other end of the spectrum we know other couples who swing and seem completely ok in their relationship.

If porn becomes a replacement for your relationship with your spouse I'd say why even be married. And I have seen a situation where someone we knew became addicted to porn and it essentially ended his marriage. But if a couple uses a little porn as a way of spicing things up, and are both on the same page about it I say why not?

I would add that honesty is important, however. Watching porn is not big deal, but if my partner felt the need to keep it a secret from me, I would be concerned as to why. Also, respect is a big thing. Despite my feminist leanings, I don't have a problem with porn in general, but I DO sometimes have a problem with how horribly women are treated in a lot of porn. Watch whatever you want to watch (goodness knows I watch my fair share as well, both for arousal and for laughs), but the degradation, pseudo-machismo, chauvinism, and misogyny won't be going on in my bedroom.

Lastly, if I were ever in a relationship with someone who had a problem with porn... well, I'd first have to wonder how the hell they ended up with me... I would definitely try to respect their feelings, but I don't necessarily agree with the poster who said that porn should automatically be off limits. I think, instead, that it would be important to really get to the bottom of why each person felt it either was or was not acceptable and try to compromise from there.

I think the key is having the other person know about it. ANYTHING that is kept secret is going to upset your partner and make them wonder why you don't trust them enough to tell them about it. Particularly something as sensitive as the porn issue. And watching porn together is a great way to spice things up, or maybe even get a laugh! My wife completely freaked out the first time she went to use my PC (shortly after i moved in with her) and she saw porn history in the browser. We had to have a long discussion about this, and now it really isnt an issue, she knows where my loyalties lie...
