Italy lost captain Cannavaro so they've got an uphill battle, plus they're in the Group of Death with France, che non salta e un Francese,
Romania, and Netherlands. They never surprise though, Italy can go on a tear and win the group and the EURO title or they can crash and burn and go home 0-3.
It will be a challenge for them but I don't see them winning the cup as much as I'd like it. EURO really is always full of surprises like Greece last time out beating Portugal in Portugal. I would bet that Germany would do good and favor them as of now. Czech Republic is tough always.

Very true. Holland had lost its identity a bit lately.
This is the best game they have played since Euro2000. And back then, it was a group of guys in their prime, who had almost all played at Ajax in the 95Champions League season. They knew each other incredibly well, and could play with their eyes closed. It was too bad that that group missed out on both Euro2000 and France 98.
This time though they look very good. It is a relief that Robben and Seedorf are not playing. Robben just holds to the ball too much, falls down easily. A great talent but I never really liked him that much. Seedorf is used to play in a ball control, slow tempo game with Milan.
Typical dutch football is based on a much more fast paced game, using the wings well and they did that incredibly well tonight.
It's early but it looks like a Germany - Holland final to me, with a huge rivalry being renewed at the top stage of the sport.

I have to go, if Johnny can translate for me...
If johnny can't translate, i will do it on friday. bye.

So, does it basically say that Donadoni is an incompetent coach who has coached mediocre teams (Livorno, Genoa) before coaching Italy; that his formation tactics (4-3-3) are obsolete; that they central defense is extremely slow, the midfield (consisting of the AC Milan midfield) wasn't even the strongest in Serie A as they finished 5th; and outside of Luca Toni, Donadoni called up a bunch of internationally inexperienced forwards.

I have watched a lot of games, so far Spain impressed me the most. And also the Dutch were great, but the problem with both teams is that they cannot keep it up for a whole tournament. At least Spain have two killers up front with Villa and Torres, but for the Dutch it has always been a problem that they just don't have a real goalgetter. Of course Van Nistelrooij is a great player, but again he missed a wide open chance. Give such a chance to Mutu or that kind of players (maybe not as talented as Van Nistelrooij, but he has more of a killer instinct) and they will convert it in a goal.
Besides that the Dutch defense is really weak. I cannot understand that in some papers Ooijer and Mathijssen really got good grades, how are they reasoning? Italy didn't score any goals, so they played a good match? Bullshit....Thanks to Van der Sar and Bouhlarouz and luck was it that Italy didn't make a goal....

I don't find it really strange that there aren't a lot of young players on this tournament. The medical treatment of football players is becoming better and better (i.e. the famous Milan-lab), so there are a lot players that are prolonging their career. And besides that...there are a lot of talents between the age of 20-25 how are breaking through which leave less room for talents to groom. Also in my opinion the talent level of the U-20 and the Olympic teams are dropping in Europe....

Yes.
Lippi refused the contract that the FIGC offered to him (at the end of the world cup) because he wanted to rest with no pressure, etc.
A couple of months ago he said that if the FIGC still wants him he could return coaching italy after euro 2008. It's the most probably solution. My dream is a return of Arrigo Sacchi, but it's impossible...
However 3 candidates for the afterDonadoni
1-Lippi
2-Ancelotti
3-Mancini ( http://www.m4d.it/forum/images/smilies/puke.gif )
Italy for the future has got 1 problems:
he hasn't got a young quickly defender (central) .

I think Trezeguet was one of the French players that got into a row with Domenech a while back after the World Cup and he was pissed and said some players spent too much time with their clubs and not their country.
I imagine Domenech doesn't like that he missed the PK in the WC Final either, he seems like that type of manager.:wow

I am afraid that the Dutch won´t win this match, though I hope they do. France is a lot better that Italy at this moment, though Italy can really grow in a tournament.
And Poland robbed? Just because of the penalty, because they were so lucky that the strikers of Austria were just plain bad (nice work by Boruc of course, but it really was more the fault of the strikers than excellent keeperswork...)

Well, SAtown this really was a penalty. Panucci was choking the guy....And thusfar the referees are from a very high level I must say, though this Norwegian guys wasn't all that and his assistants were very poor.
I'm so excited about coming match, though I'm afraid that the French will exploit our biggest weakness and that's the lack of speed in our defense. The match-up Mathijssen vs Henry or Ooijer vs Henry gives me nightmares. I hope that Van Basten will start with Bouma and Heitinga in the heart of the defense. They are both a lot quicker than Ooijer and Mathijssen, but I 'm afraid Van Basten will stay with the previous line-up...

Germany would have to lose to Austria with a bigger goal margin hen Croatia to poland.
Not happening :shootme Germany will win with at least 3 goals adventage over Austria and we can go on a lunch with Croatians.
Boruc was phenomenal
Poland played bad and I don't blame much that loss on a ref. alhough he made a mistake. There should not be any penalty. What is surprising is that the guy was from England where phisical contact is more allowed then in other leauges.

Congrats to the guys in orange indeed! Beautifull passing game, great forwards (Van Nilsteroy, superbe!), but the defense will not make it through 3 elimination games. I guess the idea is to score more than the opponent so we'll see.
France at its lowest. :(
End of a cycle. Thuram is outdated, Sagnol can't run, Makelele has lost a step, Malouda is a dick and the coach wants out... Even if they beat Italy and advance (hoping Holland won't lose against Romania), I can't see them going far.

It was a nice game, but as Van Basten said in it's press conference they were lucky. IMO France was the better team, but the Dutch were just better in finishing it off. The Netherlands were lucky that Van Der Sar was again brilliant.
@ Alain: Indeed with this defense you won't go far in this tournament, so I'm afraid that when the goalscoring will stop that the Dutch don't have much to rely on. And about the midfield...I really don't understand you're coach. Why leaving Nasri and Benzema on the bench? If you'll play with both those guys behind or around Henry you have a hell of a squad with a lot of depth and speed. I thought that Makelele played a nice game (though he should've send of, so I don't share you're feeling about the referee. Because he hit people with his hand and elbow like three times in the face. And besides that the goal of Henry was offside...just look closely at the replay) and also Malouda and Ribery were dangerous. They were a handful for the Dutch, though you're defense is aging faster than an overripe tomato...I hope that the Dutch will let Romania win, because I don't want to face an fired up French squad in the semi-finals! IMO the French are at this moment one of the best squads together with Portugal and Spain, they are just not that lucky....
@ terzappi: of course that was a foul! Panucci was choking the guy for crying out loud. I don't think that's legal, is it? You could better blame Panucci for making such a critical error, because the ball wouldn't never gone in from that angle (though Robben proved otherwise, what a horrible job by Coupet btw...) especially not with one of the best keepers in the world as Buffon (IMO together with Van der Sar and Gomes the beste goalkeepers around...)

Dude i watch the game, sure france played ok, but they lacked execution when needed it,
Holland was panickn while playing defense, but when they held the ball, they tried to keep it in possession and execute plays and started to make there run....when you have good wing players, they are deadly on a the run and through balls...thats when the forwards have to be in position to strike, as we have seen numorous times the dutch were in position to score alot....alot of miss chances for them and france....
the france GK, his a midget....dude cant jump for shit expecially on that last schnieder goal outside the box...
Dglue
06-14-2008, 05:41 AM
I agree that they lacked execution, but they were the better team. BTW I watched the game also (I'm Dutch!), so I don't get your point in that...
I don't agree with your opinion regarding the possession thing. They scored out of counter attacks as you mentioned, but not because they kept good possession of the ball. That's the main reason Van Basten subbed Engelaar, because just that was lacking in the Dutch game. De Jong played an excellent game and he was one of the few players who actually held on to the ball to keep it in play for the Dutch. The other midfielders with Engelaar as leading man had to many turnovers and made too much passing errors (mainly because Toualala and Makelele had an excellent defensive position). This was corrected in the second half by van Basten for subbing Engelaar and letting Sneijder play a position more in the centre of the midfield when Robben went in. Now they could finally let the ball do his job, instead of running back because again a Frenchman intercepted a pass at midfield.
And regarding your comment that the Dutch were in position to score a lot, well the Dutch television replayed every chance of the game in chronological order. The Dutch had just 5 (!!!) scoring opportunities vs the French 12. When I watched the game yesterday evening I didn't had the feeling that discrepancy was that big, but it was...

Well, Portugal is the favourite to win this game. They played great and have lots of talent.
It is a joke that the german coach is suspended for this game. It somehow reminds me of the NBA in terms of suspensions. Podolski (calf) and Frings (broken rib) are injured but could play. That said, I think Germany still has a chance but only a small one.:)
Realistic: 2:0 Portugal
my dream: 2:1 Germany

Too bad that the Turks are a round further....I squad with a lot of luck and very little talent. I hope that the Germans will beat them badly...
Tonight will be a hard match for the Dutch. The Russians are getting wings (which is often the case with Hiddink led squads, it's like he gives his teams an extra dose of confidence.....). A friend of mine predicted 1-1 and Russians winning after penaltys....I hope it will not go that way, though I fear the golden dick of Guus

Great game by the russians.
They deserved the win (it was a penalty) and the dutch couldn't live up to the hype that they created after demolishing both Italy and France.
Guus was better prepared and he adds yet another chapter to his amazing legacy. Now let's see if he can do it again vs. Spain (he also was a club coach in Spain for Valencia so he knows the spanish soccer (players) extremely well too).
I am rooting for Russia now (I picked them play Germany in the Finals before the tournament started).

I am a little shocked. I could not believe that Russia was that strong. They were in shape and run hard even in the overtime. I thought that Holland had a great chance of winning it all this year. I thought that Netherland will have more power in the overtime as most of them were not playing against Romain, but the youngest team, Russia were just playing better and better.
I don['t know who to root for now. Chechs did not make it through groups ... In Poland we hate Germans so maybe I will root for them. Nobody gave them a chcnce after the group rounds - now they will face Turkey and I think they got big chance winning it. All in all they have bad games behind them. They can play better.
I always hated Netherland and still I do.

How does Donadoni not let Del Piero take a PK?
Anyways, I agree. Spain was the much better team (iirc, they had about 60-40 possession % almost the entire game). I might be alone here but I think Spain dove for PKs all friggin game long as well. Both sides were equally terrible, and it slowed the game down a hell of a lot.

Well, now it´s much clearer for me. Because a sentence "I don´t like them, they´re asshole", is just flaming.
And indeed I don´t know them (though I have played against Dirk Kuijt when I was little, but I don´t count that....), so well I have no opinion if they´re assholes or not. I can understand that some players irritated you with the way they behave on the field.
