Likewise, the reason I love Spurs boards is that after years of our FO picking productive no-names, posters still burst into apoplectic fits when they don't get name players despite knowing nothing about the depth of scouting involved or even the outcomes of preliminary test practices.

My favorite line by far is when somebody wrote that George Hill was taken because the FO had no back-up plan after losing Batum to Houston. I mean... seriously? :lol A bunch of casual basketball fans who fancy themselves encyclopedic authorities know better than people whose job is to make championship squads on a shoestring budget? Hubris is awesome :lmao

I thought the Spurs could have taken Mario Chalmers or CDR, and still picked up Hill in the second round. Because nobody was going to snap him up ahead of those other guys, right?

I was definitely in the WTF club (though on the other site at that time, I've since moved over). I was definitely annoyed at missing on Batum, him being taken already, and we'd been having fairly intense draft discussion on the ideas of Brandon Rush and Courtney Lee so weren't paying attention to PG's), but I knew that I was quite high on Derrick Byars the previous year, and thought that he'd definitely be a contributor. I was wrong on that(obviously), which I reminded myself of, but even then, I was in WTF club.

Also, It's funny looking at drafts in retrospect(I know, 20-20 is everything), but both SI and ESPN gave the Spurs C's for the 08 draft, but if you look at what they got(Hill, pick that netted Blair, Hairston, Gist), that's an A+. Maybe Pop and RC know what they're doing after all.

Ok, sure everyone with hindsight can look back and be like OMG THE FRONT OFFICE IS SO AMAZING but if you look at their record in previous drafts there was reason to be upset. You toss in just how bad George Hill looked and the pick could have easily been a huge bust.

I think there were reasons most fans didn't believe the pick to be good and they are obvious. I don't think you can really knock fans too much for that.

That being said, the 2008 draft may turn out to be one hell of a draft for the Spurs. With Hairston likely to be in the rotation next year and Gist likely to be signed they may have the entire draft class on the roster. Very impressive.
