I'm curious. I know the situation having lived through it and reading/hearing about it but can someone make it more clear for me, more specific? What were the (alleged) cir stances surrounding the situation way back when?

Same as everything else around here. Harlem or one of the other lifers said it and all the legriders started repeating it ad nauseum. It's the theme here, and has been for as long as I've been here at least. Because most basketball fans have MJ as their undisputed GOAT and at this point it's obvious Lebron won't ever equal or surpass MJ.
So Lebron's riders resort to talking about MJ's character and personal life in a futile attempt to tarnish his basketball legacy. Like that's gonna do anything for the Lebron vs Jordan debate.
