The way this issue has become overly politicized and used as race-bait (on both sides) is counterproductive. There isn't some "out-of-control epidemic" of racist cops purposely hunting down minority suspects. Some numbers:
Some will argue that these numbers are "proof" of the problem since blacks are about 2.5 times more likely to be killed by law enforcement, but the sad fact is that blacks are about 10 times more likely to commit a homicide than whites, so you can say there's nothing really disproportionately eye-opening here.
It would be more productive for both sides to argue over what the root cause is that is putting so many blacks in these situations where something like getting shot by law enforcement is a possibility. And I think the overwhelming root cause is drugs (not to mention the sociological reasons of why inner city blacks feel they need to join gangs and sell drugs, which is obviously created out of a hopelessness growing up in an impoverished, inner city environment).
But what is also overlooked by media sensationalism and everyone having a twitter account with which to hype up both "epidemics" (blacks believe there's a cop-on-black violence epidemic, and conservative whites believe there's a black crime epidemic) is the massive decline in the homicide rate, even in black communities. Judging by the nightly news, you'd think Chicago is some kind of war zone. But when you look at the stats, violence has declined.
And my point about drugs is illustrated in that graph. Just look at how murders ed during the 90's crack epidemic. Here's Los Angeles, well known for its "Crack Wars."
Let's look at the US murder rate in during Prohibition:
About the same as during the crack war 90's and twice as low as today. Yet the 20's were the good old days and today we're living in an apocalyptic war-zone per the media. This also highlights how immigrants/minorities are drawn to illicit trade because of the lack-of-opportunity (real or perceived) they have due to discrimination. In prohibition days, it was Italians and the Irish. In the drug-war days of today, it's blacks.
Yes, it could always be better, but the propaganda and overreaction from both sides are just going to further divide us and stoke even more hatred and violence, when the fact is the phenomena that both sides are complaining about (cop violence/black crime) have been in steep decline and/or not significantly disproportional.
Don't watch the news and stay the off social media. They warp reality into something not representative of the actual.

I watched the presser from that Dallas hospital the other day. The black surgeon said he may live in a different neighborhood, but he was still terrified of cops if he was out of uniform.
