For a long time my take has been that GWB lost Iraq to Iran. By invading and occupying he drove Iraq into Iran’s arms and greatly increased Iran’s influence. Continued occupation has only reinforced that.
That said it’s certainly possible Trump’s brinksmanship has made US forces in Iraq even less secure, and that he may be made to pay a political price for that. My take on this remains what it always was: the US doesn’t belong there and the sooner we withdraw the better. Ditto Afghanistan.
