I am guessing that the overall death rate will end up lower once we get a lot more data. Given that I have seen reports of asymptomatic people spreading it, I am guessing that any estimate of the death toll early on is going to be overstated, since we are missing a large chunk of data for the denominator. (number of fatalities/total number who get infected)
Yesterday I saw an interview with an older guy in qt in Nebraska. Said he had a fever for one day and was fine after that. He said if it was a normal cold he would have felt well enough to go back to work the 2nd day.

Then he asked that people quit sending his family death threats in Cali.

To early to be sure but the lack of major outbreak in the southern hemisphere remains encouraging. Our influenza season ends in April, theirs starts in May so we'll see what happens.
Is this flu-like enough where it's a reasonable guess that it won't transmit nearly as much in spring and summer? Wonder if it happens that way will people get complacent only to have it come back really hard in winter like H1N1 in late 1918.

It's the same type of virus as influenza and the other human coronaviruses which follow a seasonal pattern so it's reasonable. What I've heard/read from experts is hopeful but we won't know until we know.

Yeah I could see that happening after all the excitement then people/media decide it was overblown.

thats not known yet. its the hope

people miss the point if china using those quarantines. its not to Stop the spread of the virus. thats impossible. its to allow it to spread gradually from region to region thus give breath to our medical/drug services. kinda like fire containment

USA is not employing that strategy. Thus if multiple fires start all over, our services will get overwhelmed and collapse

in the end most of us will get the virus. the secret is to let i get us gradually and not all at once

masks only useful for the infected to block their toxic aerosols

not very effective as protection for healthy people

Trump was scheduled to speak at this health care conference —

but it just got canceled thanks to coronavirus

What would Trash have to say about HIS health care and 1000s of dead untreated / undertreated Americans under Repug health care?

not very effective as protection for healthy people
Also they are disposable, so not protective if:

    - you take it off at any point, touch the outside and then your face and put it back on (which I see so many people doing, like taking it off to talk)
    - you use it for longer than recommended / re-use it after a single use, since it is a single-use disposable, and its outer surfaces can have the virus on them, or you compromise the surface by sleeping/leaning on it/crushing/bending it out of shape
    - you don't cinch it down real tight so as to properly filter airflow, versus drawing air around it, or have a substandard one like the ones we see with o Kitty and on them

so basically they are what they say they are. Dust masks for particulates, and only useful as one time use disposable items. With the boxes going for >$100 each due to supply, it's likely you only have a box or two (perhaps from being prepared), but that would only last so long if used properly, and only do so much.

It's the one case where we know the denominator with any accuracy.

You can panic if you want to. I'm not worried
That is because it is not in your backyard yet.

agree with Darrin about not panicing

unless you are 55+ years old thats is

even kids seem to be either immune to it or show no symptoms. which is a great thing.

only ting to worry about is if you happpen to be in the middle of an incontrollable hotspot. medical services would collapse and if you need a hospital you would be out of luck

that and a possible further mutation.

oh and then theres the economic impact which is almost a 100% sure bet it will bring a recession

well I guess theres good reason to worry but agree no panic yet
