All it takes is for one H-E-B employee to get the flu, not even Corona, and for H-E-B to shut that store down, even for one day, or just a few hours. There will be a mad rush to every grocery store in town.

The only benefit of Trump downplaying is that the stores haven't been rushed. Store can handle the slow waves of initiative taking individuals. There will still be a mass rush eventually though which they won't be able to handle.
Even people that are aware of what's happening are shocked when it becomes reality to them.

It's a fine line to walk. I do wish the basic precautions to take were being pushed more. I think yesterday Pence tweeted out something that basically no Americans have seen.

I bought six weeks of chicken, pork, and beef to throw in the deep freeze last week when it was widely apparent community spread was well under way in the US (can't stand frozen fish though). In addition to cereal, oatmeal, rice, beans, potatoes, and canned vegetables plus lots of soap. And a load of eggs since they'll usually be good for a month, plus they're cheap and I eat a lot of them anyways. I don't need to be out at the grocery store too often interacting with people who are working sick to make rent.
The law defines recklessness as knowing disregard of or indifference to a known risk. One extremely credentialed doctor who serves as a public health advisor is testifying that DJT disregarded the known risks of coronavirus but went one step further in actively disseminating incorrect information. That action is directly tied to hampering the governments response.
Many have commented that this isn’t about red or blue. I agree. This is about science and truthfully speaking to the public. Hopefully the government can get its act together because we frankly need it right now. But how can anyone look at this whole situation and not point a finger at a charlatan who’s obviously more concerned with his re-election prospects - in the least subtle way possible - at the direct expense of peoples lives?
Fauci directly contradicting WH messaging might have prompted Trump's delegation of the emergency. DJT is in way over his head after three years of diligently dismantling the civil service.
