You took no issue with the concept of hidden bodies until I used it. Mums was the word when it was being used as a strawman.

That Gilead study is sort of a mixed bag... while recovery times are up 30%, mortality was only reduced 3%...

It's obviously positive because it's better than nothing, and could also help alleviate hospital load, but we're probably still seeking a more effective therapeutic treatment...

    ‘A phantom plague’:

Evangelicals who defied social distancing guidelines are dying of coronavirus in frightening numbers

many Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals have been irresponsibly downplaying the dangers of COVID-19 and doing so with deadly results: journalist Alex Woodward, in the U.K.-based Independent, reports that

the pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 30 pastors in the Bible Belt.

“Dozens of pastors across the Bible Belt have suc bed to coronavirus after

churches and televangelists played down the pandemic and actively encouraged churchgoers to flout self-distancing guidelines,”

Woodward reports. “As many as 30 church leaders from the nation’s largest African-American Pentecostal denomination have now been confirmed to have died in the outbreak, as members defied public health warnings to avoid large gatherings to prevent transmitting the virus.”

“The virus has had a wildly disproportionate impact among black congregations,

many of which have relied on group worship,”

despite the climbing death toll, many US church leaders throughout the Bible Belt

have not only continued to hold services, but have

urged worshippers to continue paying hes

    — including recent stimulus checks

    — to support their mission.”

FDA in ‘ongoing’ talks with Gilead to make remdesivir available to coronavirus patients ‘as quickly as possible’

PUBLISHED WED, APR 29 20203:16 PM EDT
The Food and Drug Administration has been in “sustained and ongoing” discussions with Gilead Sciences to make antiviral drug remdesivir available to Covid-19 patients “as quickly as possible, as appropriate,” the agency said Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said data from a coronavirus drug trial testing Gilead’s drug showed “quite good news” and sets a new standard of care for Covid-19 patients.

Speaking to reporters from the White House, Fauci said he was told data from the trial showed a “clear-cut positive effect in diminishing time to recover.”

The New York Times reported that the FDA plans to announce as early as Wednesday an emergency use authorization for remdesivir.

FDA spokesman Michael Felberbaum told CNBC, “As part of the FDA’s commitment to expediting the development and availability of potential COVID-19 treatments, the agency has been engaged in sustained and ongoing discussions with Gilead Sciences regarding making remdesivir available to patients as quickly as possible, as appropriate.”

President Donald Trump has touted Gilead’s remdesivir as a potential treatment for the virus, which has infected more than 3.1 million people worldwide, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. A number of studies are testing the drug to see if it’s effective in stopping the coronavirus from replicating, but it is not yet a proven treatment.

Gilead also released Wednesday preliminary results from its own study, showing at least 50% of the patients treated with a five-day dosage of remdesivir improved. The clinical trial involved 397 patients with severe cases of Covid-19. The severe study is “single-arm,” meaning it did not evaluate the drug against a control group of patients who didn’t receive the drug.

Dr. Anthony Fauci (L), director of the National Ins ute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases speaks as US President Donald Trump meets with Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards(D-LA) in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC on April 29, 2020.

Their stock has been going up for a while, tbh... and look, objectively, there's an improvement with their drug.

Was hoping it would be more effective against severe cases, but we'll keep hoping.

Weird that Hokkaido's reopening is being portrayed as a miserable failure. Their numbers for the population of 5 million during the second wave are better than those of Austin during it's current lockdown.

Assuming that they had weathered the storm - and keen to get the local economy operating again - local authorities lifted the state of emergency on March 19, with schools and businesses reopening.

With hindsight, experts agree, it was too early and, just 26 days later and after 135 new infections were reported in the space of a week, the lockdown was reimposed on Hokkaido’s 5.3 million residents.

Austin is lucky to have 135 new infections in three days. Bill Miller tho.

Is that math right? There was a 3.6% reduction compared to the placebo group (11.6 vs. 8). Isn't that an overall 33% reduction? Or am I completely out of it?

Florida is now blocking medical examiners from releasing COVID-19 death totals

Florida’s state health department intervened earlier this month to suppress the medical examiners’ reports, which regularly showed

death totals that were 10 percent higher than the official tallies put out by the state.

For the past nine days, no reports from the medical examiners have been made available to the public, and

there’s no indication of when they will be released in the future.

they’re planning to remove probable causes of death from the examiners’ report,

which would make it impossible to tell how many people the examiners believe have died from coronavirus.

the Florida state government has shown a pattern of suppressing information about the disease.
