Taiwan is a pawn on the chess board. They know they wouldn't be met with significant resistance if they ever tried to militarily re-conquer it. Look at Hong Kong. (Yes, I know, not the exact same case, but it's an example.) The Chinese are integrating communism into HK and there isn't a damn thing the West, Japan, or SK can do about it. Taiwan would be similar. The US and England didn't attack Germany in the pre-WW2 times because they seized Austria-Hungary, enslaved the Czechs, ransacked Poland or murdered Jews. They only did so when they were a threat to themselves and overall world stability with Hitler's ambition to take control of the world. China conquering Taiwan, or Russia conquering say, Georgia or half of Ukraine, won't trigger WW3.

China has 1.3 billion people, and Taiwan has 23 million. China has nukes and a top 5 military force in the world. They could take Taiwan whenever they wanted, though they'd certainly be met with substantial sanctions that they wouldn't like.

It's a last-resort scenario. A power grab that wouldn't render them very popular in the eyes of the West. As much as the West relies on them for production, logistics and cheap labor; they rely on the West for technology, business, trade and commerce. If the West were to all of a sudden sanction them like North Korea, it would be very bad for China. A power grab of a, say, Taiwan would inevitably lead to such sanctions. Similar to Russia with, say, the Ukraine or Georgia. WW3 on the other hand, nobody would care about sanctions, but that's a long road of escalations away.They just didn't want to for 70 years....
