It's just a case of what's good for the individual being pretty bad for the whole.

As we are now almost four months into the pandemic, Dr. Leverence said physicians continue to learn more about the virus. However, both models from UTSA and UT Health are showing another doubling in hospitalizations come next week.
“Both models tell us that we’re looking at another doubling of hospitalizations by next week. The models diverge a little bit after that, and it depends a little bit on what we all do,” Dr. Leverence said. “What I mean by that is if we’re currently wearing our masks when we go out, staying home when we can, washing our hands regularly, not meeting in large groups, then hopefully we’ll see a plateauing of these hospitalizations. Not next week. Next week is going to happen. ”The models could change; however, if residents don’t abide by health guidelines, Texas and San Antonio could become the new epicenter for the virus, according to Dr. Leverence. “If we’re not doing all of those things, then no, we could be in store for a New York City-type of a situation here, no question about it. That’s what the models are predicting,” Dr. Leverence said.
With sports and school just around the corner, a lot of questions are still looming.
“You know, right on the heels of this current wave is going to be most certainly a fall wave, you know, an early winter wave. That’s what we saw in the flu pandemic of 1918, and that’s what most of us are expecting this fall. This current wave is probably going to last until August or September,” Dr. Leverence said. “To me, I don’t think it’s going to be safe to open up for those kinds of public gatherings later this fall. But we’ll find out. We’ll find out.”
Absurd fear porn headline
Why is it fear porn if he's saying that's what the models indicate? Was it fear porn when there were tons of warnings the exponential growths in deaths in the US in early March indicated the US had an Italy like wave in store for it? I hate seeing this same everything's ok, this is overhyped rhetoric (especially now) that we heard in early March when it was clear the US was about to get hammered and then did get hammered but there was a chorus from the right about it's only 50 deaths, it's only 100 deaths.
Eh, the article says that’s what the models indicate if precautions aren’t followed. Not quite fear porn but not quite accurate either.
SA has had 107 deaths TOTAL. NYC, in its peak, had over 400 deaths per day.
We will never be like NYC.

Not to in the punch bowl, but it's hard to expect people to do the right thing at this point. If they can't pack bars they'll pack whatever else they can. I just hope they wear their damn masks...
Fat Antonio? Eh maybe not that high, but there's nothing to stop it from getting bad except the people themselves. We'll see how people react now that the health system is bending under the weight (no pun intended) since NEXT WEEK is going to happen and will really open eyes.
Of course we're not going to have as many deaths as NYC, they're an 8x larger metro area than us. But man going to the it's only 107 deaths card already when we're still super early in this surge? That's the same ducks did when I was warning him upstairs that the US was about to get butt ed in March.

The only precautions being taken in Texas are mask requirements within the borders of large cities (and their corresponding counties) and the bars being closed down.
It’s beyond ridiculous that masks have become a politicized issue. That said, you can’t expect people to not socialize or congregate for months on end — especially when leadership doesn’t utilize lockdowns you prevent further es by increasing testing capacity.
Which makes the doctor's warning reasonable IMO.
The health guidelines mentioned in the article were masks, hand washing, and staying home when feasible.
Fair, but then why not just come out with it and say the city needs to lockdown again? If it’s reasonable to assume people are going to go out - especially during a holiday weekend - and of doing so puts the city at risk of becoming NYC2, doesn’t the doctor have a duty to advocate for what would stop that scenario, e.g. lockdown?

And regardless of what Abbott does or doesn’t do, a doctor can advocate for a lockdown if was that dire.
Which is what happened the first time. Wonder how long leaders are going to drag their feet on this. It's like watching the NY movie all over again.
Yeah they’re in a tough spot, especially with July 4 coming up. The natives are restless, esp with bars closed, and I don’t think there’s much appe e for another lockdown
Probably why no one has the guts to suggest it, and likely why they'll wait until the very last moment if it comes to that. Sucks more people will die because of the foot dragging.
Lockdowns are going to be out of the question most likely in anything but a worst case scenario (eg Italy, not NYC) and he knows that. But better to know what you're going to be in for. If it was my call lockdowns would probably only be a last resort if the hospital system is on the brink of collapse.
Right, so then you’re in this weird gray area where some businesses are open, some are at limited capacity, and some are closed. And those decisions seem to be somewhat arbitrary (why are bars closed but not car dealerships, why are restaurants allowed to have people dine in). I agree that a lot of this could be addressed if people mask up, but if lockdowns are out of the picture, we’re going to be in the situation where these surges occur.
