One thing is for certain - the methods for counting deaths and even cases of each virus are worlds apart. For example, with influenza in Sweden:
Data on laboratory-confirmed influenza patients are intermittently linked to Swedish Tax Agency data on death in order to identify deceased individuals and to retrieve their dates of death. If 30 days or less have elapsed since the influenza diagnosis, the death is considered to be influenza related. This measurement is not specific nor is it sensitive. It is imprecise because a death within 30 days might have been caused by something else, and it is not sensitive because this measure does not include deaths if the diagnosis of influenza was not laboratory confirmed. Therefore, there are most likely a large number of unrecorded deaths from influenza. In addition, the data do not include information about underlying risk factors or complications of influenza infection.
While there are likely a large number of unrecorded deaths for COVID-19, the R0 and fear factor involved with it along with political ramifications means aggressive testing is occurring. This isn't true for influenza. There are no long lines of influenza testing drivethrus, no daily report on influenza positive cases and most people never get a lab result on influenza, so it's hard to say what the true ifr is for it. If you count everyone who dies within 30 days of a positive report for influenza in the US, you'd obviously have a higher fatality rate than you have when the cause of death is actually known.
It's the infection rate that is so elusive. With influenza, I am borderline asymptomatic but could be a carrier so I get a flu shot yearly. If no one got flu shots just like no one gets COVID-19 immunizations, what would the ifr rate be for each?
The meat of the matter is that they are additive. You don't get to choose one or the other, they both still exist and add to the case load.
lolololol #cancelculture hero
