Moved to management now, but was an engineer for a long time. I work in tech, so at the time, the US was the right call, career-wise.
We have to consider those that cannot pay anything as a burden to society, but even those people can offer military service.

Most everybody I know pay taxes one way or another, tbh, i.e.: sales taxes are pretty much omnipresent.

In a healthy society, the military should be invisible until needed, subsidiary to the main culture, not possessing it.
Being in the military, being a vet, doesn't mean you're patriot, a hero, or an adult man/woman.
Most of the grunts go into the military because it's the best option for job.
With all the homeless vets and DAILY suicides by the military, even those not deployed overseas, it's obvious the military is simply not healthy for Ms of individuals nor for society.
