Not the biggest fan, but I do like the idea of picking a defender. I don't think he was better value than Haliburton, Lewis or Nesmith though.

Bryn is gone
He's who I would have picked based on who was left. Kid is a plus defender. Everything the Spurs do is based on that.
Then he is a 40%+ three-point shooter.
Home- ing-run.
who?
I'm satisfied.
It's not a great result. I don't think Halliburton or Bey were significantly better.
But defense matters, and hitting shots matters.
And he's GREAT in transition.
My top two on the board were Haliburton and Vassell. Happy with Vassell. Defense and three-point shooter with some possible upside as a creator or isolation scorer? Yeah, I'll take it.
Best perimeter team defender in the draft -- by far.
a 6'7" defender who shoots 40+ from 3? exactly what we needed tbh![]()
On a serious note, hope he ends up being good.
My previous write-up on Vasssell:
https://www.spurstalk.com/san-antoni...t-big-board-1/
Considering Devin Vassell is most likely going to be a shooting guard in the NBA and considering the Spurs have about a dozen players on the roster already capable of playing shooting guard, he’s admittedly not the cleanest of fits in the draft. However, Vassell brings enough to the table to easily justify picking him if he’s still on the board.
Defensively, I think he’s the best perimeter player in the draft. He’s quick enough to do damage on the ball but it’s off the ball where he really shines. Vassell is an outstanding help defender who reads defenses at warp speed, rotates quickly and can even defend the rim. He’s a good athlete who is destined to be a playmaker on the defensive end. For a defensively challenged team like the Spurs, adding Vassell to the mix could solve a lot of problems.
On offense, it’s difficult to figure out what he’s going to be down the line. Florida State shares the ball a lot so it’s not clear if he has shot-creation ability or if he’s viable in pick-and-rolls. As it stands, we know he can hit jumpers off the dribble — even though his shot-selection left much to be desired. But at the very least, Vassell should be able to space the court as a stand-still three-point shooter, as he hit better than 41% of his threes in each of his two seasons in college.
Running it back again. Letting their assets depreciate in a seller's market. At least the Sniff crew should be happy![]()
I'm fine with Vassell pick but man this team is so absolutely underwhelming. It's going to be an amazing day when they finally rid themselves of that 70yo anchor.
Solid pick. I was genuinely worried they were going with Saddiq Bey but it looks like cia pop is still alive
Current Roster:
DJ/ Lonnie/ Q
White/ Vassell/ Mills
DeMar/ Keldon
Lyles/ Gay/ Samanic
Aldridge/ Poetl/ Eubanks
Something's got to give?
Cool, can't wait for him to be called up by the Spurs in 3 years.
Like the pick a lot. Will probably be a 3 in the nba. Day 1 he will be a better defender than Forbes and Marco combined with the infinity gauntlet.
This does open the door though for one of walker, murray, white not being here in the next few years...something I thought I would never say...
ESPN has him at 6'5" and 180 lbs. He's never guarded much tall wings in college, he'll be guarding other guards in the NBA.
I have concerns with that ugly ass new shooting form he was trying on workouts.
still too short. dont forget ST's obsession with Stanley "6'8" Johnson
Vassell's help-defense is really special, tbh. I'm glad that the Spurs are still apparently valuing defense![]()
Wait... Where is the announcement that we traded picks with GS or Atl? What happened?...
I didn't want 6'3 guard so the Spurs exceeded by expectations. At worst it seems we got Danny Green 2.0.
Walker or Murray most likely.
Ben Pfeifer is pretty knowledgeable. He had Vassell third on his Big Board:

3 Devin Vassell
Elite team defenders on the wing with real size aren’t common and Vassell is one of the best team defenders I’ve ever scouted. His ground coverage, playmaking instinct, and stunts, digs, closeouts and effort are all unmatched defending off of the ball, paving a path for Vassell as a true defensive game-wrecker. He’s just fine on the ball, unspectacular laterally with average strength. That defensive package on the wing is worth a lot, but not a top three pick.
In the first game of Vassell’s sop re season against Pitt, he nailed a flurry of pull-up jumpers, something totally unseen by a freshman. That pull-up shooting was sustained through the whole season, powering his top three case by way of genuine difficult shotmaking upside. His shot profile compares to that of the Kawhi Leonards and Khris Middletons of the world, wings who weren’t spectacularly efficient off-dribble shooters in college, especially from range, but developed into that in the league. Pull-up development unlocks his capable passing, which is hindered by an inability to create advantages.
In the short-term, Vassell can plug into any team as a spot-up shooting fifth offensive starter with high impact defense from day one. His offensive ceiling isn’t as high as Edwards’s or even Maxey’s, but the chance to add shot creation to his All-NBA defensive ceiling makes for a prospect worthy of top five consideration for the right team.
