I think Fauci was referring to seeing so many people wear those blue surgical masks that are for larger droplets. this virus clearly benefits from dryer air and possibly can infect with very small droplets. Wearing one of those blue surgical masks all day at work it’s very likely not gonna do it.
from my observation in San Antonio Texas the majority of people wear The blue surgical masks. I think this was what Fauci was referring to. And I don’t think you wanted to go with don’t wear those blue surgical masks, and then people wear nothing. My take, could be wrong. It seems it should be an N 95 and fit very well. The South Koreans have come up with a very good mask that can be altered to fit different faces.
It may also be the New strains actually spread even better in the air rather than the mutation just causing them to bind better to the proper cells. I think this prossibly also started a controversy. In any event this is good, people are starting to understand.

Kind of seems like Fauci and Osterholm are talking about two different things. Osterholm seems like he's talking about masks for protecting the wearer while Fauci saying more layers catches more droplets and protects people more from the wearer. Didn't even realize Osterholm had changed his tune on airborne transmission, for the longest time he was arguing it was aerosol transmission spreading COVID and those particles are smaller than any cloth or surgical mask is going to be able to filter.ST has gone full anti Fauci.

I can see how doubling could work in principle, but it seems the outer mask would have to completely cover the inner one to catch the side blowout or whatever. Distancing is the most important thing people just gave up on a few months ago.
I went to check out Galaxys Edge in FLA a few weeks ago. Impossible to really social distance there. You just gotta hope the KN95 mask works and IMO it works like a charm for me. I was in close contact with thousands while there and I gotta think some must have been infected. But im clean.

Oh and I went to Tampa Zoo too. Holy that was a crowded cluster lots unmasked too. The underground aquarium was basically an orgy, I quickly ran out of there.
