Fine and well, but characterizing the risk as exposure to enormous utility bills misses the most important element: the impact on us when energy companies fail to deliver. It usually happens when we need them the most.

If it were necessary, I'd much prefer to pay a little more for grid resiliency than pay a little less and have to go through this again.

    A Biden end run

and an I am OK, so you must be OK, because I am from the north. if you read the article you can see the snake head Darrin oozing from this guy. Even though he does not live in the luxury lifestyle they do. In addition, we have this gem of a response from the same man.

As for whom he blames for the power outages and water issues, he said, “God.”

“But he’s also helping us get through it,” Freudenstein said.

personally, I hope he’s right on his last statement.

The more people that upgrade their homes to solar the less power companies are making per customer. It's eventually going to mean either poor service, lots of outages and such... or incredibly high prices for those who have no alternatives.

You weren't saying the growth of solar will make utilities more expensive and more unreliable?

If not, what were you trying to say?

If I was saying that, how does it mean solar is bad? Power could be more expensive and more unreliable, but that would make grid power bad, it wouldn't make solar bad.

It's simple economics. The more users you have for a product, the cheaper per unit you can sell that product (to a point of max production). Once users begin to go away, your cost of operation remains and even if you run at a lower capacity, you still have a base cost of operation that would be passed on to the consumer. It could happen with other things as well but solar is at the forefront of the effect, I think. I don't think people are going to start raising their own veggies and meats any time soon, at least not enough to affect the market.

Not every comment is a value judgement.

To be fair, your comment was elliptical. You didn't unpack it. Thanks for making yourself clear.

Wall Street analysts have said for several years that solar-and-battery might revolutionize the electricity business. And utility regulators fear enough people might defect from the grid to slash utility revenues and worsen service for those who stay.

The dangerous cold snap has ended, but water shortages, food insecurity and winter storm related homelessness remain.

Thousands of homeless in NY face that daily but the national spotlight wouldn't shine as bright there.

Darrin’s all good, so the public emergency is over.
