Love the guy's at ude so far.

Looks like the Spurs still have a good reputation
So he picked the Spurs because of culture, system, and Pop.

So it sounds like Dieng signed with the Spurs due to a combination of Pop, culture and RC's ties to Africa.

Good stuff and good to know the Spurs can still attract free agents. Can any small market, non-championship contender do that? I can't think of one who can when the playing field is level.

All those whining that culture doesn't matter will ignore this but it looks like proof that culture does matter -- at least a little bit.
Let me play devil’s advocate. How many players has our culture repelled? Rightly or wrongly? Isn’t that a consideration also? Most guys don’t want to play here for many reasons. We signed a formidable backup... Kutos to PATFO, you almost did your job. Winning the Dieng buyout sweepstakes because of your culture isn’t anything to brag about.

And you could argue you don't want those players on the team.
Yes it's a pretty small win and in the long term may not translate to a lot, but still says a lot that the organization is still well respected.

im trying to imagine the thought process necessary to argue that the culture and expectations of an organization with the most sustained run of success in NBA history was actually a bad thing overall but I can't do it.

    "Tim Duncan was the culture"

Ok go ask Timmy about that and see what he says.

    According to Bobby,

The pro rated minimum exception was not used, the MLE was. He claims Dieng was signed to $1 million. As far as if it extends past this year, he didn't say. Probably not.

    Thanks for finding this.

If Bobby's information is correct, I highly doubt Dieng's contract leaves him under team control for next season. He will command much more than $1M per year in free agency.

Bobby's take that Dieng is better than Aldridge makes me hopeful for the rest of the season. The Spurs didn't even have Aldridge, they had Eubanks at backup C. Dieng is an enormous upgrade when viewed through that lens.

TD half built the culture but is no longer here. Let’s be dynamic. TD has also
been on record many time to challenge the culture. Once upon a time certain players would tolerate, even embrace our culture to play with someone like TD.

Stephen Jackson was one of his best teammates ever. He barked back at Pop for going too hard on Tony. Pop broke many PGs in the league has often been out of line. Players not named TD have never been allowed to challenge that. The NBA does not operate that way anymore.

Dieng with some lowkey shots at Aldridge:

" I am here to serve the team. Whatever way the coach wants to use me to help the team, I am willing to do it."

Dieng on minutes: "You play hard, you play well, you are going to play. If not, you are not going to play. That’s the way I see things."

If he were right on that last point Gay wouldn't be eating up minutes over Luka and Lyles would never see a second of floor time again

Spurs really need that it definitely helps with the recruiting and keeping players by getting Dieng he will be a really good backup C I can also see Pop playing him and Poodle together I wonder how that will go? I like the signing it will screw with our draft pick but it's good will see what they do this summer?

Bruh. Don’t stretch that far. There are far more examples of players asking out of this culture than FA choosing SA because of it. On top of that valuing culture post DPG has resulted in missing the playoffs so it’s not exactly manifesting itself in useful ways as of late.

It’s good to have a great culture but you need actual talent to make it work. Culture being too important also leads to short sightedness and wastefulness as well with regards to asset management

This is pretty much what I've been thinking for years ever since the stupid emphasis on wasting a ton of money on Mills, Gasol etc.

By the way, thanks for signing with the Spurs Gorgui, but you may have chosen the wrong team . Another terrible loss.

Culture is a great thing; simply saying it’s not really quantified with regards to winning or landing FA. This was a very unique situation with a lower level player that had a very special connection to RC Buford.

It’s not to totally dismiss this but if you are at all projecting forward based off of this? Mistake.
