Tokyo Olympics must be ‘reconsidered’ due to Japan’s failure to contain pandemic, says report | South China Morning Post (scmp.com)

Surely super principled and super woke Pop won't go if it's a coronavirus risk to the people of Japan and all visitors.

Less then 3% of Japan has received the vaccine.

Only doctors and nurses are allowed to administer shots. Recently the gubment moved to approve dentists too.

Japan has exhibited “poor performance” in containing virus transmission, along with limited testing capacity and a slow vaccination rollout, according to the commentary published in the British Medical Journal on Wednesday.
“Plans to hold the Olympic and Paralympic games this summer must be reconsidered as a matter of urgency,” wrote lead author Kazuki Shimizu of the London School of Economics.

“Holding Tokyo 2020 for domestic political and economic purposes - ignoring scientific and moral imperatives - is contradictory to Japan’s commitment to global health and human security.”

The commentary adds to a drum beat of doubt among medical professionals that the Olympics can be carried out safely this summer. A survey of more than 1,000 Japanese doctors last month showed that 75 per cent believed it was better to postpone the Games, according to physician referral company Ishinotomo.

pssst There is this thing called podcast with podcasters.... some of them getting paid 100s of millions(Bill simmons in SPorts NBA space he actually votes on MVP of the NBA) who have a ton on influence on opinion. LIke more than a man and his blog(and his boomer hit man...thats you dude) who's "grades" sometimes get only a couple of K views(who knows how many unique...and some under 100) or who ever will read the next 129 k of your post here in this can calls Spurs Talk...........

now go into the DM's and talk all the about how you "owned me" when I have a channel on youtube I started as a lark that has more views than your collective post put together dude.....
Seems like a passive aggressive post here, but your point stands.

The majority of younger people are on some form of social media, and have a phone in their hand which gives them access to a camera, microphone, etc.

More and more, information is being disseminated by things like YouTube, podcasts, Facebook/Reddit/Insta....even TikTok.

, we just got out of a president who used Twitter as his primary platform of communication. I won't get into the effects that has on us as a society overall, but we have to accept that the world doesn't go through the normal news cycle anymore.

Japan, at its absolute worst, was still significantly better than the USA. It wasn't even close.

    Total Cases per Million:

    Japan: 4,605
    USA: 99,176

    Deaths per Million:
    Japan: 80
    USA: 1,769

Of course, all the anti-science Trumpers will respond to this by saying it's fake news, then quoting some QAnon source, and re-asserting that Hillary Clinton eats babies while navigating shipping tankers to block the Suez Canal, but it's pretty clear Japan dealt with Covid much better than the USA. Lots of Japanese people already wore masks during flu season, and there's no "yahoo rebel without a cause muh freedumbs" cult in Japan that compares to what the USA has.

a Japanese public that has shown in polls it overwhelmingly opposes holding the Olympics during a pandemic.

    Entire article:
Two Tokyo Olympics: Inside and outside the National Stadium (apnews.com)

“There is an infectious disease going on and so I think they should spend more money on medical care,” said Takashi Sakamoto, who attended the rally. He said he works in warehouses and cleans buildings.
“Even before the pandemic, there were people who can’t buy food and became homeless, and the pandemic has made things worse,” he added.
Miyuki Otomo, a retired teacher attending the rally, called the Olympics a “horrendous event” that is being pushed on the public for commercial reasons.

Despite public opposition, all signs point to the Olympics opening on July 23. Japan has officially spent $15.4 billion on the Olympics — some estimates suggest twice that — and the International Olympic Committee relies on billions in television broadcast income that has been stalled by the pandemic.

Would super woke Gregg want to address this?
