    ‘Goldilocks virus’:

Delta vanquishes all variant rivals as scientists race to understand its tricks

As recently as May 8, delta caused only about 1 percent of new infections nationally.

Today, it has nearly wiped out all of its rivals.

The coronavirus pandemic in America has become a delta pandemic. By the end of July, it accounted for 93.4 percent of new infections,

The speed with which it dominated the pandemic has left scientists nervous about what the virus will do next.

The variant battles of 2021 are part of a longer war, one that is far from over.

Delta is sending thousands of people into hospitals every day and has knocked the Biden administration back on its heels.

In a few short weeks, the delta variant changed the calculations for what it will take to
    end the pandemic.

the target may be impossible to reach
anytime soon given the hardened vaccine resistance in a sizable fraction of the country,

the fact that children under 12 remain ineligible and the persistent circulation of disinformation about vaccines and the pandemic.

Vaccine-resistant coronavirus 'mutants' are more likely when transmission is high, new model finds

more likely to emerge when a large fraction of the population is vaccinated and

    viral transmission is high,

and no steps are taken to stop the spread,

a situation that looks a lot like the current one in the U.S.

    https://www.livescience.com/coronavi...ion-model.html

the mutations could happen here, but more probable in, eg, South Asia and Africa

We should not dismiss the possibility of eradicating COVID-19: comparisons with smallpox and polio

Is COVID-19 also potentially eradicable? Or is it inevitably endemic having established itself across the world? Commentators have focused on the challenges of reaching population (herd) immunity,7 yet population immunity is not essential and was not achieved for smallpox, which was eradicated through ring vaccination.

As proof of concept for COVID-19 eradication, several countries and jurisdictions have achieved elimination without vaccination, using new and established public health and social measures (PHSMs) (eg, border control, physical distancing, mask wearing, testing and contact tracing supported by genome sequencing).8 Successful jurisdictions have included those with vast land borders such as China, high population densities such as Hong Kong,9 but also island nations such as Iceland and New Zealand, although with occasional outbreaks from border control failures that have been brought under control.10

Pretty simple to see if diners had not had papers they would have been asked to leave, if they did not comply they would be arrested, if they resist arrest they would have been hurt and if they fight back possibly neutralized.

Reminds me of fascism and anyone disagreeing is a fascist themselves

The virus isn't going to go away
    No one said it would.

Polio and Smallpox didn't go away either. Hard to see what cheap cynicism buys you besides the smugness of presuming yourself correct.

Since we don't live in a model, the authors instead recommend that people maintain measures like masking and distancing "for a reasonable period of time," even once the proportion of people vaccinated nears the herd immunity threshold, they wrote in their report. This would help drive resistant strains to extinction before they spread too far.
    That part was funny

Israel to expand use of COVID drug that gets 88% of patients out of hospital

The Health Ministry has approved the expanded use of an innovative COVID-19 treatment that helped 14 out of 16 severe patients who took it to be released from the hospital one day after receiving their final dose.

The drug, MesenCure, has been being tested by Rambam Medical Center as part of a Phase I/II trial. The ministry has approved allowing any Israeli hospital interested to take part in the Phase II trial and to use the drug for additional approved patients.

The goal of the expanded trial, which will include a minimum of 50 patients, is to confirm the safety and efficacy of the drug, which was developed by Bonus BioGroup.
