well it was never going to be a win because we stayed too long
lets assume that going in there to knock out al qaeda was the right move. we did take care of them. it was pretty clear that the taliban was going to take back control of the country as soon as the US left. so either we were going to stay there in perpetuity, or we were going to leave and the taliban was going to take back over. would have been the case in 2005, 2010, 2015, or 2020. we were either going to re-escalate and just flatten the whole country, or we were eventually going to leave and cede power to them.
so either we should have left much earlier when al qaeda was dealt with, or at the very latest after bin laden was killed in 2011. stayin there for the last decade did absolutely nothing except delaying the inevitable. there was never going to be an exit strategy that prevented the taliban from taking back over. no matter when we pulled out, it was going to suck for the people of afghanistan. but staying there in perpetuity was never an option.
still, its clear the withdrawal was somewhat botched since they had to after the fact send back a force of 3k just to allow americans to leave. though wtf were those people doing not leaving... the withdrawal was planned and announced a while ago
