Hate to say it but obesity is another pandemic in the US, tbh...

From 1999 –2000 through 2017 –2018, US obesity prevalence increased from 30.5% to 42.4%. During the same time, the prevalence of severe obesity increased from 4.7% to 9.2%.

That's 1 in 10 Americans being complete lardasses... just can't look the other way when it comes to accounting for it.
Would have guessed the numbers were even worse than that, tbh.

It's the ridiculous amount of sugar in in America. Blows me away how many Americans drink soda as their main form of hydration. is so bad for you when I drink it I make sure to cut it 50% with whiskey.

Do these guys struggle during flu season too? Just seems odd to see perfectly fit guys like that all of a sudden get wrecked by COVID but who knows....I'm in good shape too, and pretty much never get anything outside of a once a year "flu-like" symptoms for a day but there was one time I got some kind of food poisoning that made me contemplate the viability of suicide for like 9 days or so. just outta nowhere.
Your personal immune system plays a role in this. Some people react extraordinarily well to some vaccines producing lifelong immunity but we give them boosters anyway (tetanus). It is a genetic thing as well and we just dont know a lot about it. So yes health plays a major role but if we had a really good system of measuring immune system ability if given a certain vaccine (not by just measuring Ab er) we would know a lot more. There is a genetic range of immune responses in this entire process with different vaccines as well as the real beast (active virus etc..).
The mechanism used to create a enormous variety of shapes of proteins that recognize foreign objects that enter your body is absolutely incredible. But it is also a probability thing.

This is old, but very good because it is very old as things have been found to be even more sophisticated in the body's response. It explains how our own bodies can produce such an enormous range of proteins to recognize foreign antigens. This is the basis for our ability to make so many different kinds of antibodies and cells that detect viruses and so on. And its from Nature so its supposed to be readable.

I personally have never had the symptoms in what people describe as the flu. But mononucleosis kicked my ass in college. I missed an entire semester after trying to come back to quickly. So I do remember what it feels like to be punched in the face by a virus while being young and very healthy.

I will also note during this whole Covid crisis I have not been sick with ANY kind of cold or anything else other than allergies. I have never gone this long without getting a minor head cold.

Even worse it's not cane sugar but that high fructose corn syrup, which is on everything these days. No surprises the US switched to it since the 70's and now we have an obesity crisis.

I thought marketing companies ditched the HFCS to call it something else

I blame it on the 90s low fat craze where all our food dropped fat and replaced it with sugar so that it could be marketed as low fat and thus healthier. Seemed like it was right after that our obesity rate in this nation exploded.

You really have to read the ingredient label now.
There are some really good juices that do not have corn syrup in them.
    But they are more expensive.

there's plenty of fat in restaurant food, junk food, and HFCS is in everthing,

S.A.D. Standard (USDA) American Diet, meant to be consumed 24 hours / day with snacks, is pathogenic. USDA promotes what is profitable for BigAg / BigChem, not what is healthy.

the two main healthy regimes of value are very similar, Mediterranean diet and AHA DASH diet

It may be a slog for some.
    But its really good.

Basically our DNA in immune cells does a whole lot of changing positions by cutting and splicing to make a huge range of Ab proteins.
When this was discovered people really freaked out because it had always been a kind of fear that our DNA should do something like this to "working" proteins. But its a great way biologically too make a wide range of shapes to attack a wide range of invaders. I find in perfectly astounding. Its actually quite beautiful. When we had figured out we had far less genes than we thought we had we could not figure out we could make all these different proteins to protect ourselves.

    Now we know.
This article explains it, but maybe goes into too much cellular stuff but its needed to understand how immune system cells that have the right shaped proteins on their surface get selected for and multiply rapidly to fight an invader. its pretty incredible.

Portion size in American restaurants is ridiculous and the idea that we have to eat snacks to watch TV is even worse. Can't believe how big sodas are too nowadays. Like you get a meal at Whataburger and the default soda size is 32 oz and they call it a medium. I remember when 20 oz was a large at fast food places, now a quart is a medium? Yeah our diet is ed and un able in this nation.
