Abbott again bans vaccine mandates, adds issue to special session agend
no localities or school districts can require their employees to get the COVID vaccine,
after the federal approval of the Pfizer doses earlier this week muddied his previous directive on the matter.
prohibits public ins utions —
including state agencies, universities, local governments, public schools and any other en ies that receive public funding —
from compelling employees to get the shots or asking people who use their services for proof of vaccination.
Wednesday’s directive puts a blanket ban on the practice, regardless of approval status granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The order will have an immediate impact for San Antonio Independent School District, which appears to be the only public en y in Texas that has required vaccines for its employees.

Texas Democrat challenges Dan Patrick
Another partisan stalemate ... again imperiling the jobs of 2,100 legislative staffers along with two key conservative priority bills.
two bills prioritized by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick
a bill that would limit how educators can teach social studies and talk about race at Texas public schools, referred to as the "critical race theory bill," and
another that would require transgender students to participate in sports based on the gender listed on their birth certificate instead of their gender iden y.
if we don't pass these two bills — the [critical race theory] bill and the transgender bill — the Senate is not going to consider trying to fix the funding in Article X.
Article X refers to the section of the state budget that covers funding for the state Legislature and other independent agencies that support its work.
Abbott vetoed legislative funding in June in retaliation for the defeat of his priority election and bail reform bills

Huffman said, adding that she may try again in future sessions to restrict nonprofit bail groups.
Democrats who opposed the bill argued it will do little to curtail violent crime,
most people accused of murder while out on bond in Harris County had secured their release by paying bail.
The bill’s restrictions apply only to no- and low-cost bonds, meaning those who can afford to post bail will still be able to do so under the new law.
the Texas Civil Rights Project, called the bill
“an uncons utional, sham reform that will expand the use of cash bail —
and allow the for-profit bail industry to extort more money from Black and Brown communities across our state.”

New Law Requires Texans to Have Counselling Before Being Allowed to Vote
AUSTIN —Governor Greg Abbutt has signed into law a bill requiring all Texans to submit to counselling before being allowed to vote.
The law mandates a counselling session and a twenty-four-hour waiting period before a voter is permitted to cast a ballot, Abbott explained.
“Many people who think that voting is something they have to do haven’t gotten all of the information available to them,” he said.
“A counsellor can sit with them, pray with them, and help them make the right choice.”
Answering critics who claim that the twenty-four-hour waiting period is designed to keep voters from casting their ballots in a timely fashion, Abbott said,
“All we’re trying to do is make sure that voting is the right decision for them.
Every day, I hear from people who voted for me who say that
they’ll regret that decision for the rest of their lives.”

Who's enforcing Gov. Abbott's ban on school mask rules?
Not Abbott.
his order banning such mandates has gone largely unenforced —
so much so that the federal government doesn’t consider it active.

Bans on abortion, homelessness and critical race theory: Texas Republicans push 666 radical new laws
The legislature, currently in a special session, is still discussing a number of laws expected to be passed later on this year, including measures related to voting rights, transgender restrictions, redistricting, and bail.
making substantial revisions to the state's policies around public safety, law enforcement, and K-12 education.
cons utional carry" law, is opposed by most of the state's residents,
59% of Texans do not support allowing their fellow citizens to carry firearms without licenses.
many police unions actually opposed the law upon its introduction.
Texas also implemented a statewide ban of homeless encampments.
a $500 fine on anyone who temporarily resides under some form of shelter without a permit,
precludes Texas localities from being able to opt out.
there are around 2,000 people currently living unsheltered in Austin alone.
Other laws apparently aim to combat the rise of "wokeness" in the state's public ins utions.
places restrictions on the ways in which public school teachers can discuss race and history with their students. "A teacher," the law says, "may not be compelled to discuss a particular current event or widely debated and currently controversial issue of public policy or social affairs."
outlaws teaching the concept that "an individual, by virtue of the individual's race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously."
also provided funding for its "1836 Project,"original! and why not burn all the Forget The Alamo books?
to provide Texas residents with a "patriotic education" about the state's war for independence from Mexico and
"increase awareness of the Texas valuesfascism, racism, xenophobia, misogyny, Christianity Uber Alles
that continue to stimulate boundless prosperity across this state."except for homeless, blacks, browns
municipalities with over 250,000 people will effectively be punished for reducing their law enforcement budgets,
with the state threatening to reduce sales tax revenue and increase property taxes.

On Heels of SB 8, Texas Poised to Restrict Access to Medication Abortions
With extreme abortion bans likely to spread across the U.S., one rights advocate said the medical community will have to "drastically shift the way people access abortion, on their own terms."
Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to sign Senate Bill 4, which would
bar healthcare providers from administering the two pills needed for medication abortions after seven weeks of pregnancy.
Currently, medication abortions are legal in the state until 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The bill also prohibits the two pills—misoprostol and mifepristone—from being sent via mail in Texas.
those who are found to "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" violate the law could face up to two years in jail and fines of up to $10,000.
Medical providers who dispense the medication could also face disciplinary action.
meant to make it virtually impossible for most women in Texas to obtain care.
"Six weeks, seven weeks... both of them are set to stop access to abortion before most know that they're pregnant,”
The Republicans who pushed the medication abortion ban through the legislature have claimed there are increased complications for patients who use the pills after seven weeks of pregnancy,
but according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, fewer than 1% of patients experience adverse effects after having a medication abortion.
About 60% of people who have abortions by the tenth week of pregnancy choose medication abortions,

As befitting a racist Confederate slave state
Historian suggests Fugitive Slave Act closest historical analogy to Texas abortion law
the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Zeitz's reasoning is that the law "required state and local officials to arrest alleged runaways on the simple say-so of a bounty hunter and criminalized interference these abductions."
He explained that the law
"incentivized the abduction of free Black people,
turned all Black people in free states into bounty, and
compelled uncooperating white people to become agents of state brutality."
Zeitz acknowledged that the two laws aren't perfectly analogous,
but he does believe the Texas abortion ban could similarly encourage a vigilante culture.

Greg Abbott Saving The Babies, Except The Ones He Killed With COVID
the "pro-life"governor probably won't be touting this particular statistic:
As of September 3, there have been 59 deaths of children from COVID-19 in Texas.
As Houston Public Media reports, that makes Texas a "leader in child deaths" from the virus.
In addition to the kids who have died,
in the first two weeks of schools reopening, Texas has racked up more than 50,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases among schoolchildren,
and more than a dozen schools have had to close temporarily because of outbreaks.
