the investigation began after he was contacted by GMG Superintendent Kym Stein, who began her job this July - after Haughey had stopped seeing the student.
Stein said the school district's previous administration overlooked the situation (Fabbs here as it should have been) "and she (the new ) felt as a mandatory reporter, this was pertinent to the investigation" following which Haughey's sexual relationship with the student was revealed.

You can't handle that behind closed doors. It would be a potential disaster for the school and their system.
She was a teacher and he was an underage student. Pretty clear cut.

Yeah...but there's still an issue of power. Not sure what the statute is. But it'd be similar to a boss having sex with an underling.
Not that I agree with severe punishment of the teacher but I'm pretty sure there is some rule in place, regardless of the age.
It's against the law for a teacher to an 18 year-old student too, ridiculous it's a felony though. If they're below age of consent then throw the book at the teacher but it's bull to see her facing felony charges for this. in Iowa the age of consent can be as low as 14 if the other person is 4 years older or less. Kind of stupid it doesn't apply to 17 vs 21 here.
She definitely shouldn't be facing felony charges. I get why the rule is in place for teachers. But it should be looked at on a case by case basis. But that's not really how the system is set up.
That being said, if you're a teacher, you need to understand this.
